    The white flowered shrub is an azalea. They don’t bloom for very long, so it’s usually just a green bush for the majority of the year. But when they do bloom, they are spectacular! The pink ones are gorgeous too!

    • @pennylivingston148
      @pennylivingston148 Před 9 měsíci +5

      That is why I love my Encore Azaleas. They bloom twice a year and the fall bloom is very long. Mine have been blooming for about 9 weeks. (8a, coastal NC). Having said that, I have 5 of the older white azaleas that look just like the one in this video. They are all planted in a bed together, and nothing is any more spectacular than the old azaleas when they bloom. This garden is to die for!!!

      @@pennylivingston148 I know it is silly, but it just feels wrong to have reblooming azaleas! Azaleas are special because they are glorious for a few weeks in Spring, we celebrate them, and move on. Having said that, my new landscape had only the encores when we bought it last year so I have them. For now.

    Thank you so much for the information regarding the recent planting zone update. I’ve lived in the Seattle, WA area zone 8b for 50+ years and, over time, have noticed a difference in the plants that do well in my garden. When I first moved to this area we were a zone 8a. With this recent update we are now listed as zone 9a. This explains a lot as to those plants that seem to be thriving in my landscape.

    I enjoyed this video SO much! The 1st garden with its gorgeous azaleas and peonies, then The Enthusiastic Gardener's garden, which is absolutely stunning in every season! I'm amazed what Pamela can grow in the mountains--what a beautiful cottage garden! (I love the Sierras, but have always said I couldn't survive in the snow and her pictures reminded me just how true that is.😂) And ending with gorgeous Japanese maples in western Oregon. Wow! I'm still in zone 9b here, in Gilroy, CA. Of course, we can grow some zone 8 plants, (typically with a little babying, because my soil is rather gravelly and drains a little too well during our hot summer weather), but I loved seeing plants I can use with some confidence.

    regarding your comment about deer getting into your garden beds, I have found ammonia works to deter deer, rabbits, and most dogs. I make a small flag out of a really absorbent cloth, attach it to a small stake, maybe 18 inches high (taller or shorter depending on the height of the critter), and then dunk the "flag" into ammonia and let it soak for a few minutes. I use bright red, yellow, or orange colored flag so from a distance they blend in with your flowers and are not too ugly. Be sure to wear gloves. I have tried every deer deterrent out there, and this one works for me and is not expensive. Refresh after heavy rainfall. I am so happy to have found this solution I just had to share it.

    My zone stayed at 8b but these maps are based on averages over 10 years. I’m going to continue to get frost and shade cloth for the extremes.

    Thank you for adding someone from Oregon! It's SO hard for me to find CZcamsrs who live in my area. I'm in Portland but we are pretty much the same climate and pretty much what works there works here. I was a zone 8b but now I'm 9a. Definitely interesting!

    Awe - I was waiting patiently for your zone 8 garden videos and saw the usda zone change. North FL went from 8a to 9a. Sigh. The summers have been so hot. It’s hard to go out and do anything. But we have cooled off for the fall. Thank goodness! I guess I’ll dive into your zone 9 videos. 🫣

    Janey, it was so fun to see my garden in your video, the white blooming shrub in the first part of the video is an azalea, I'm sorry I don't know the variety it was here when we purchase our home 26 years ago, so it is an oldie but goodie! We are 10 minutes south of Portland. Our zone seems to be changing as well, we never used to see bananas or palm trees in peoples gardens, but they are becoming quite popular now. Thank you for including my garden in your video, you are doing an amazing job, it's hard to believe you've been gardening for only two years, I am excited to watch your new garden take shape! Edit here: I just checked and Portland is now zone 9a! Thanks again Janey, I often learn something new watching you videos, maybe I can grow a bougainvillea! Trudy

    I love Janette’s, Fatzia (SP?) I live in 8a, South Carolina and I’m on the hunt for that plant. Janey, I started growing Foxtail ferns after seeing yours at your former home. I’ve brought most of mine in to my sunroom, but left a hardy Test-dummy in my landscape. Update to come😁I’m loving this series!! I also still love my hat, now I want the one you’re wearing today. Hi Janey! I remembered you were complaining about a fly in your garden shed with you. To greatly reduce flies from entering indoor spaces, get some bars of Irish Spring soap, original scent. Hang the bar at the door on the outside by putting it in a cut up and tied leg of pantyhose. Flies hate the smell of it and stay away from the doors. We even it hang the soap at the opening of the dog door, so the flies won’t follow the dogs in the house. I get the Irish Spring and pantyhose at Dollar Tree here. I tend to replace these every spring and keep them up all year.

    I’m in Brentwood TN just outside Nashville. They changed us to 7B. But I dont trust them. Ive been gardening here 30plus years and we get that occasional very cold period that kills. And I mean kills things. Ive tried the hardy gardenias so many times.. Even in a sheltered location with no luck. So. I’m sticking with 7A. Ill let others experiment and then I’ll take a few more chances. Great series. We have property in central Florida and need some ideas for it. I’m excited to see what ideas come from your viewers.

    Hi, Janey
    Thanks for doing this series. I am really enjoying seeing everyone's lovely gardens.
    For some reason, the USDA zone look up site won't recognize my zip code, so I can't tell if my zone 8b California garden has changed or not.
