Nothing was toned down. Technology progresses on the same plane that society does. In the 1950's, with how society was living, we did fully picture flying cars, floating houses, and jet propulsion. They didn't call it the Space Age just for fun. After Kennedy was assassinated society was never the same, in the exact way after 9/11. People got more apathetic and cynical and stopped caring. It became a race to be the richest person at the bottom before a early death and a meaningless life.
