- Nick Currie, cousin of Del Amitri singer Justin, is known in hip music circles as Berlin-based one-man band Momus. He first came to attention with the Happy Family, a group formed with musicians from Scotland’s Postcard Records. He left university and concentrated on music and appeared on several influential labels including 4AD and Creation. His current association with Cherry Red has endured for many years. Currie’s career has been marked by innovation and controversy, and much of this controversial hour-long soliloquy on his career and the aspirations of others will raise eyebrows.

I've listened to Momus for many years, and even knew Nick in his NYC era, but I've never understood the exact arc of his life and career. This has been enlightening. And as a fellow interviewer, I'd like to praise Iain McNay for his minimalist style. He's a very good prompter.
it is amazing to meet and discover the human being inside the artist. you had already loved the artist. now you love both of them. thanks
Great interview - never gets boring.
Can't believe Nick will be 50 in a few months!
And now he's 62!
This is the best Cherry Red interview I've watched so far - it's excellent! :)
Thank you for interviewing Nick. I have been a fan of his music since the early 90s and have had the chance to see him live and speak to him in person. This interview has been one of the most informative and in-depth looks into his career. I definitely learned a lot about him and his music from this interview. Long live Cherry Red!
Fantastic interview. Thank you.
his were the best Brel translations ever, really.
Thank you for the interview, really enlighting about the carreer and the times...
Yet another amazing interview from you guys... keep up the great work.
One of the Best Songsmiths of our Age ( or maybe of the previous, which makes him even better), because now there's simply no possible competition . In the 80s and the 90s he had Weller, Costello, Jarvis, Cave, Lawrence, Green or Pearce, as some of his elligible competitors, but I guess they are all so different that it doesn't matter anymore. To me he is a Master, before being a PhD.
Thank you so much for this video! I have loved Momus since Lucky Like St. Sebastian
24:38 - this anecdote is superb, for so many reasons.
An absolutly brilliant songwrite , thanx you Momus
Excellent interview, thank you
Absolutely brilliant!
I have always described Nick Currie to friends/Momus virgins as "Scotlands greatest living writer" and this articulate and fascinating interview does him proud.
Fascinating. Thank you!
if you just make a list of the names he is dropping in the course of the interview it makws up an All-Star list of my 1980ies. I really loved Momus before he became too unfocussed in my books. Watching an interview with him, i really have to say: Nice guy!
this is gold
Genius!! cheers from Mexico
Excellent. Thanks.
"I can see Japan" is actually sung by wee Nick? Sweet and not too surprising.
Brilliant, genuinely fascinating interview. Nick's a top chap. Minor quibbles are very quickly rushing past Timelord and The Philosophy of Momus, and I don't recall a mention of Laila France along the way either. Still, great, enlightening interview, thanks a lot for putting this together.
That the Happy Family-album is actually really brilliant.
i love his fasssion!
Without exception, the best song on the Creation comp "doing it for the kids" was Momus' "Complete history of sexual jealousy.."... their downfall was Oasis & such other turgid "Rock"..its no as if there wernae decent songwriters out there..& still are..
great interview...is something wrong with his eye or is it a fashion thing??
the stars forever album story is badass! i would go for it
"Choir of Bulgarians"?!?!?! :D
31:45 - handshake 50/50 split at Creation, and Nick says Iain never did that. The latter keeping conspicuously schtum there, NB. So what was he running? The industry standard 12%, I assume.
Smartest Scot since Ian Anderson.
54:17
Must say his speaking voice reminds me of Tony Blair lol
Posh Scots, eh?
He lost the sight in his eye when it became infected after he cleaned a contact lens with dodgy tap water. He's embraced it really - it's not just a stylish affectation.
@Brian Yatman How was it that both contact lenses weren't affected?
