A flight taking off from southern China had a 145-minute delay because a passenger refused to sit in the upright position when the plane was about to take off. The woman said she had a medical condition so she had to lie across the seats.

Medical doctor here. If she had a "medical condition" that required her to lie down all the time and not tolerate the short period required to be sitting for takeoff and landing then she should NOT be flying in a commercial plane to begin with. 🙄

A hour of delay costs a lot to everyone both time and money for the passanger, airport and airline themselves (not just one she boarded, but others waiting to use the terminal/taxi/runway) the airline can fly without you for arriving late even if you just helped president's son heart surgery

If you have a medical condition that requires specific treatment or accommodations onboard a plane, you MUST report it to the airline. It's the same for every airline in every country. It's a liability issue that airlines don't want and if you didn't report your medical issue and disrupt a flight like this, they will kick you off the plane. It's better to kick you off the flight than to have you on it, suffer some type of medical issue, and the airline gets sued for it.

As former cabin crew from singapore airlines, I have to say this delay was reasonable. Once the cabin door is closed, it’s complicated to open the door again. If the door is not closed, it’s easy to kick him out but still ground staff need to remove his check-in baggage which cost a lot of time. Check how United airlines kicked the Chinese passengers out of cabin in a disgusting way years ago.

Lots of ignorant folks in the comments saying to let the Karen sign a waiver. It is simply not allowed. The aviation regulations are set by the Civil Aviation Authority of China (and other countries do the same) that for takeoff and landing, seatbelts must be fastened, tray tables and footrests stowed and seats in the upright position for safety in case of an evacuation. It shouldn't have taken 2.5hrs to deal with an unruly pax! She should have been disembarked after given a warning by the airline and still refused to heed the warning.
