  • 1972, 6hp Johnson outboard. Purchased in the late 80's in non-working condition. Sat in shed at lake until this spring. Replaced a gear in the pull-start mechanism as well as the fuel filter. Good starter good runner. Cover is nicked and scratched because former owner hauled it around in the trunk of his car. Bought from orginal owner. Have all original paperwork as well as operator manual in pristine condition.

From just before we started outsourcing everything to Asia. The pinnacle of domestic manufacturing capability. 50 years on and still kicking.

I just bought same motor yesterday , it near mint like yours , already service the lower end with new Hydro oil , no signs of water or rust , can't wait to put it on the water . These old motors bring back memories from growing up , my Dad (RIP) had a 4hp and it took us on many fishing trips
    Thanks for sharing

Nice condition, these motor will last forever if properly maintained.
That fuel pump does have diaphragms along with a mesh screen filter, that need to be replaced with rebuilt kit when it fails to pump fuel, Or just replace it like you did.

It is a fuel pump it runs off case pressure and a diaphragm with a spring n such.

Thanks Chris. Never was sure how those type pumps worked. I sold the motor last summer. Forget the price but the guy who got it seems really delighted. His old trolling motor (good size boat) gave up the ghost just a few weeks before. Again, thanks for the info.

Is this an OEM or aftermarket fuel pump. I am wondering if the aftermarket one will still work on my 77 6hp.

aftermarket one should work, just make sure you can return it in case it does not.

It’s a fuel pump. Not a filter. Springs and diaphragms keep the fuel moving to the carburetor.

Right, but the inlet does contain a screen filter.

Did you use an OEM pump or and aftermarket? I have an other version of the same motor and trying to decide if aftermarket pump will help my stalling issue?
