Savage Stevens 320 Shotgun Review

  • The Savage Stevens 320 is a Chinese-made, value-priced, 12 gauge pump shotgun imported by Savage. It’s based on the Winchester 1300, which uses a rotating bolt design. I bought this one because for $299, I got a 28″ barrel with choke and an 18.5″ barrel with cyl bore.

Have an SXP, and took one of these in a couple months ago (since parted with it).
I happily report that there is some parts compatibility between the two, mostly one way though.
For example, the barrel from the Stevens fits right onto the Winchester, and the bolt locks, while on the other hand the Winchester barrel fits on the Stevens, but the bolt will not lock. It has to do with the way the lugs are cut. The Stevens is squared off, while the Winchester has a taper (which helps in smoothness I would argue as it provides less resistance when opening/closing bolt), so the bolt lugs on the Stevens do not have enough room to turn into lock with a Winchester barrel.
Some of the smaller parts are compatible as well.
Winchester SXP has better overall fit and finish, and runs much smoother I find, however it is a touch more expensive.

The magazine tube on the 320 is fatter on the Stevens and a Winchester barrel will not slide over the tube. Doing the reverse with Stevens on 1300 may lock-up but without adequate support on the mag tube could lead to catastrophic issues. Leaving this in the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" column.

Best breakdown video on CZcams for the Savage Steven’s 320. . I don’t think people that make videos like this realize how much CLOSE UPS and clear explanations help people get through assembling and disassembling their firearms. Maybe their own familiarity with the firearm makes their vague instructions make sense to theirselves while not realizing someone that has never touched a certain model will not get it. Clear instructions and close ups really help. Thank you so much for this video. Truly the best.

I've had this shotgun for about 6 months and have put probably 300 rounds thru it without a single problem. 2 3/4 and 3" shells, everything from birdshot to slugs. It is what it is, a good inexpensive shotgun.

When i bought my 320 three years ago it was a huge gamble, i knew absolutely nothing about it other than savage has been kind to me in the past. There was also very little information online regarding it. The gamble paid off!! I wanted a very reliable beater shotgun to do a little bit of everything, and boy does it. If you want a shotgun that has a low price, but high level of reliability when abused, this is the gun! Owners note- The recoil is very VERY ammunition based. Ive found 2-3/4 shells hovering around 1200 fps to be quite comfortable. Ive tried 1450 and it was absolutely miserable. Side note, my first shells were 1450, and that permanently fixed the jamming issue in 3 shots.

Take your barrel off and look for burrs or unsmooth areas around the chamber and bolt face.
It sounds like your brass is hanging up on something in that area.
They are NOTORIOUS for commimg off the line burred up for some reason.
Look for markings on the high brass indicating where the hangup is occurring.

I took mine to the range, fired over 60 shells and only had one not eject well but I didn't cycle it quickly. Fired .00 buckshot and #4 buckshot and 30 and 50 feet and I can tell you the sights were right on the money and I've never fired a shotgun before. Shoulder a little sore but I've had worse from workouts. Kick is about what you'd expect, more than an AR, less than a bolt-action.

Thank you for this video! I got a "great deal" at a gun show on a 20 gauge. Looked brand new. Then I shot it and it locked up. It extracted with a lot of force. I tried dove loads, slug, and #3 Buck...all jammed up and wouldn't eject with out force. I watched your video, stuck my finger in the breech and could feel a burr on the face of the chamber. This ,matched a "scratch" on the base of the shell where it held the case after it expanded on firing. Your video found my problem. Thanks again.

Im my experience, part of the "break in" includes a very deep clean. Not sure if cosmoline or whatever is used to store/ship but I cleaned mine brand new. You'd be surprised at the amount of gunk I removed.
A few decades back I bought an AK74 and had feeding issues. My brother had the same problem after building his AR.
The solution, as stated here, is a good clean and oil. Pay close attention to the chamber. A brass and cloth cleaning kit is a must. The brass wire brush (sized to just touch the chamber) clamped on an electric drill along with some good firearm bore cleaner will work wonders.
The best part is when I gave my brother his AR back after cleaning and sighting in. That thing was pin point and cycling ammo he swore wouldn't, flawlessly.
Edit: btw, the brass wired brush will not harm the chamber but be careful if you don't want to cause surface blemishes.

My friend got one of these, 28 Inch Barrel from Cabela's Canada. Works quite well, didn't have the barrel issue Adriel had. We did test cycle the shotgun before taking it from Cabela's, so maybe that's a good idea if possible.
Since he is a new/low volume shooter, I don't expect to see much issue with it.
And I have an SXP, so I can share some maintenance experience with him.
His 320 in my opinion is smoother than my SXP Defender. Maybe it is just the SXP is tighter fitting overall. The 320 also have a lighter loading gate spring, which I think is quite nice.

    • @22webbs

The 590 has better aftermarket support, ambidextrous safety, dual extractors, proven track record, and is made in America. If you're not on a budget Mossberg, Remington, Benelli are kinda the top dogs. If money is an issue, you probably are fine getting the Maverick 88, Stevens 320, or H&R Pardner.
