Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg
Produced by Sandy Lieberson
The Rolling Stones performing “Salt Of The Earth” from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.
Recorded before a live audience in London in 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was originally conceived as a BBC-TV special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, it centers on the original line up of The Rolling Stones -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon) -- who serve as both the show’s hosts and featured attraction. For the first time in front of an audience, “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” performs six Stones classics. The program also includes extraordinary performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono, and The Dirty Mac. A ‘supergroup’ before the term had even been coined, the band was comprised of Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums) and John Lennon on guitar and vocals.
The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is one of the first concert films to be mixed using Dolby Atmos Technology and Dolby Vision. ABKCO Films has produced a breathtaking experience that faithfully re-creates the actual environment in which this historic event took place using invocative technology that treats sound as 3D spatial information. It can be said that what Dolby Atmos does for sound, Dolby Vision does for visuals. Dolby Vision is an advanced HDR technology that delivers enhanced contrast, detail and dimensionality to the screen by empowering every pixel with a much broader range of color and brightness.

Keith’s voice is very refreshing, I don’t know how to explain it
True

I've always found Keith's voice refreshing because Mick's can get on my nerves after a while.
Keith's voice is well! Keith's bloody brilliant
@@niandra_t well that makes 2 of us.
Ah, don’t you just love Keith’s voice? So pretty; and so soothing!!! Like a gentle breeze off a sunny coast😍
That was before about a million Marlbroro Reds and an ocean of Jack Daniels

Brian Jones’ smile is the best part!

Brian would only be alive for 9 months or so after this so so sad. I'm glad people in the comments of Stones songs never forget him
Salt Of The Earth is a beautiful song 🎵 ✨️. Keith his voice is beautiful and sweet.Mick his voice is amazing. They both compliment each other perfectly. This video is simply amazing. It gives a peaceful vibe. The people in the video are just having fun and enjoying themselves. This is sending heart felt 💓 ♥️ ❤️ 💖 vibes. It goes out to anyone who is considered the Salt Of The Earth. I love the Stones. They are 2nd to none.
What a beautiful song. The Stones are known for their irreverence, profanity and mischief, but they are an awesome musical group like no other. This song is part of their testament.
?
No, ok the thing is. Jesus used the quote that this title contains, and they... probably are mocking jesus.
This is the most dis-ingenious song I’ve ever heard 😂😂😂
This song is a gem ! So underrated
It's a great track,I think.
This is fantastic! Love to hear Keith sing more. It really hit the 1968 psychodelic era with the costumes & neon ponchos. John Lennon in the background looked totally wasted and having a blast. The entire Circus is a joy for those of us that want to flash back to the 60"s for the evening.
Townshend looked absolutely baked as well.
There is a genuine feel with Keith here. Vocally and visually, he can raise that glass!

The whole Film is spectacular. Brianˋs georgeous Smile.
Always sad for his much too early Death. He was such a great Musician and Human.
What a lovely look of Brian, enjoying, laughing... RIP.
Pete Townshend, tripping out of his head, really enjoying it, looked like great times, wish I was there ✌️
Just about every one tripping on that filming. I too wish I was there too.
@@jamesanderson348Definitely 👍
Pete Townshend should be enjoying himself his band stole the show, yeah they dosed a lot of those people without their consent, thought it would be some kind of Prankster acid test....take a good look at the dude in front of Brian Jones and Keith Richards, he looks like he is tripping balls. Some of those people do not look like their having fun.
And Keith Moon right next to him.

A very refreshing music to listen to. Keith's voice is soothing
Amazing how the two voice's of Mick and Keith competed against and out sold so many so called more talented and gifted performer's. " You can't always get what you want ", but that's all I need 😛😛❗❗
There are no more talented performers in Rock than M&K&Br&Bi&C!
@@jessewolf6806 I like refined artist's, like Bowie , but the Stone's are masters of the naturally raw sound. I have to say there are some current overlooked artist's like Jack White and Ryan Bingham that have it and get it .😎
As high as they all are they still put on an amazing show that NO bands nowadays could even come close to matching no matter how hard they try....sometimes moments like this were meant to happen so that later generations could see it and get an idea of just how magical those times really were....and to those of you who were alive to experience it....you lucky dogs!! Take those memories to your grave!
I was one of those. Yes I'llo do!
But not as good as The Who on that day
00:41 Mick’s smile is all I need in life
He was exhausted and up for nearly 24 hours putting this whole show on.
Love seeing Pete Townshend and Keith Moon in the crowd -- real rock and roll community.
Great song, great message! An underappreciated classic by Rolling Stones..
Brian laughing and raising his hat to Pete Townsend and Keith Moon at 4:02 😂💖 It's lovely to see his beautiful smile 😍😍😍
I'm so happy to see more of the Rolling Stones Rock'n'Roll Circus than "Sympathy" and "Jumpin' Jack" and "You can't always..." all the time. Thank you so much for "No Expactations" and "Salt..." @Glimmer
One of the Top moments in pop history.
Keith has a pretty voice for someone who was always smoking and drinking
Indeed!😂
He sang in a boys choir in church until his voice changed and they let him go. He took it real hard. He said in his biography that then and there he decided he was going to be a rebel
@@karenzywics273 i didn't know that, thank you.
Yeah for sure but Mick was a little groggy at the start of this song
He sang like he's having a stroke.
Mick Jagger is the best showman ever.
this video is wonderful Jagger, Richards, Jones, Watts and Wyman, thanks for everything The Rolling Stones.
Love this movie. Where else can you see the Stones, The Who, John Lennon and Eric Clapton all hanging out and playing. Love to see the dearly departed Keith Moon, Brian Jones and especially John Lennon alive. Miss you guys. Rest In Peace. Shout out to Jethro Tull with Tony Iommi on guitar. He was only with the band a short time till he left and formed a little band call Black Sabbath. This is a rock and roll history lesson!
Tony Iommi was already IN "a little band called Black Sabbath".......he merely left them for a couple of weeks to join JT, then subsequently rejoined Ozzy & Co.
Thank you. Beautiful comment.
Nice to see Brian Jones happy
Mick's hand on Keith's leg and Marianne falling asleep ❤️
It's so sad to see Brian Jones in this condition. Months later he'd leave us.
He didn't want to be there. He had attended the rehearsals and was in a good state of mind for them but the day before taping called the director and said he wouldn't go. He felt Mick and Keith hated him and didn't want him around. The director said to him "You ARE the Rolling Stones, you need to be there." I think that's why they played No Expectations - it was Brian's song and sort of a compromise to him to come perhaps (plus it was Mick's favorite ballad at the time)
Brian had just gotten off trial for a phony drug charge in September 1968 and during it had been abusing sleeping pills and alcohol. This is December 1968. When he died, he had kicked the sleeping pills but was still struggling with alcohol.
This was not a happy time in his life but I wouldn't say he was stoned here. Just unhappy.
Very very sad. He did manage to knock off that BEAUTIFUL slide work on No Expectations. That was perfect. RIP Brian 😔
Whatever
He still looked beautiful
@@Bklyn93 Good summary of the situation.
One of their best songs!
He was so beautiful. 🖤
Mick and Keith both were.
Love that look in Brians eyes☆☆☆☆ brother loved it. We miss u all.
I especially love it when Brian's eyes smile too.
You mean that drug-addled look?
@@chipgaasche4933 ..always one professional Brian-bashing Stoneoid asshole making cracks about Brian being stoned. The entire effing bunch of them were wrecked. Brian had been in the hospital with pneumonia prior to this fiasco. He held up his end of the bargain, so piss off.
@@chipgaasche4933 Not drug addled, he'd been crying earlier in the evening and the Stones didn't start performing until around 4:30 am and did between 5-10 takes of each song. What you are seeing is exhaustion.
Beautiful job by Keith.
From the looks on their faces it's hard to imagine a happier time in the Stones history.
Yeah although ironic it kind of masks some of the tension that underlies this performance. They didn't even let it go to air because mick was displeased with it. And Brian was on his way out and, this was his last show before he was dumped from the band. If you read some books from people who attended the show, as lovely as this song is that was definitely some tension underneath.
Let's pray and drink to the stones that they tour in 2021
I know waiting for the rescheduled dates for cleveland ohio got my ticket!
i hope so to but only if this covid thing ends
WHY I HAVEN'T SEEN THIS BEFORE? SUCH UNPOPULAR AND UNDERRATED CUTE SONG OF THE STONES
It's on The Rolling Stones album, Beggars Banquet, also, that piece of film is from The Rolling Stones Rock'nRoll Circus, I've got the dvd, it's really good,I would recommend it, The Rolling Stones sing about 6 numbers, but they have guests, The Who sing 'A quick one', John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell and Keith Richards sing 'Yer Blues' from the White album, also there's Jethro Till, who sing Song for Jeffrey,it's a really good show,a proper 1960s show, but not corny or showbiz,it's real good music, by really good bands.✌️
This is fucking epic, Keith and Mick singing together .. imagine Axl Rose later singing with them .. magnificent
That was great performance between the two of them together.
Beautiful ending, just a little Dylanesque. Thanks Rock and Roll Circus we love🤟
All the Stones fans around the world are waitting for the next tour and a new album(like "Blue and Lonesome)next year, 2022, sixty year!. Congratulations to the greatest band!
Wonderful Keith 🌙
Keith wrote some of my favourite Stones songs, like Gimme Shelter, that's just an awesome song, probably my favourite Stones song,he also wrote Jumping jack Flash,Ruby Tuesday with Brian Jones, but Jagger took half the credit,he wrote the music for the brilliant We Love You, and he wrote the majority of Exile on main Street,he was a great songwriter, until he started getting too wasted and busted all the time, giving Jagger the chance to take over and lead them into disco, The Rolling Stones are not disco,I blame Jagger for the Stones music going downhill after Exile on main Street. Keith came up with Angie while he was in Rehab, but that didn't last, but while Keith was writing most of the music and a lot of lyrics,in the '60s and early '70s,he was on fire.✌️

Keith, you have a great voice. I never heard you sing before. You write awesome songs. You're a great song writer. My favorite video is when the Stones went to see Muddy Waters sing in a Club singing that great song Baby Please Don't Go and you Mick and Keith get on stage and Keith just picks up that Guitar and plays that song naturally like you've been playing that for years but I love you playing that guitar with the cigarette in your mouth.
One of my favourite songs from this or any album. Love the arrogance and accuracy referencing the people who " Let's think of the wavering millions, Who need leading, but get gamblers instead"
Brian is clearly having the most fun, he's not acting
You can’t act being wasted - he was long gone sadly
Townsend and Moon fairly rambunctious
@@flyingburritobro68 He wasn't wasted. How did he play on No Expectations and the other songs if he was wasted?
Brian Jones looks genuinely happy at this moment and not under the influence of drugs.
I've just had a second look and changed my mind, they're all a bit spaced out! I really can't stand those daft hats everyone's been issued with, it's like a kids dressing up party. Apparently The Who were the stand outs at this show, anyone know what they sang?
I wonder what it took to get Charlie to sit there like that lol
Charlie is everywhere quietly. Hardly noticeable but omnipresent Charlie.
@@sh230968 he’s like Drax. He’s mastered the skill of standing so incredibly still that nobody will notice him
Raise a glass to the hard working people!
I'll drink to that!
Keith actually has a pretty good voice, never thought much about the background vocals...🤔🎶
Listen to the song Something Happened to Me Yesterday. It's a weird but good song by them from 1967, Keith sings co-lead vocals
@@a_bored_english_guy I think Something Happened to Me Yesterday is more interesting...it's not something you'd expect THE STONES to do...Whereas Salt of the Earth is more of a basic blues song.
@@a_bored_english_guy Yes, but when they experiment beyond the blues, it's always good. Example, Time Waits for No One isn't a blues song but most would consider it great. Or Sweet Virginia. Dead Flowers. Dear Doctor. Far Away Eyes. Miss You. All non blues numbers but all rather integral.
I mean, Paint it Black isn't a blues song.
The Beatles had the great singers John and Paul. George was good. Keith was their "Ringo" vocally.
He started singing on their 1967 album Between the Buttons, the song Something happened to me yesterday, which is about their first LSD trip, also you can hear him on Connection, from the same album. I love the song he sings from Let it Bleed (my favourite Stones album) called You got the Silver, really laid back. Also from Exile on main Street, when he sings Happy,I think he sounds a bit like Neil Young on that track.🎄
this masterpiece is so underrated
the guy sitting underneath mick and keith is in a quantum battle while the music keeps the portal open
Todas las canciones de los stones con Brian Jones son majestuosas
Brian was truly a tortured soul, you can see the pain in his eyes. Rest In Peace Brian.
can't see it.
You are surrounded by tortured Souls. Some are bent on hiding it from others. Brian couldn't hide it anymore and that's a good thing.
According to all reports, a tortured asshole. Apparently fathered children all over the place, and was mean, selfish, and irresponsible.
I don't see any pain in his eyes, they were all so lucky because of being stoned...
Come on, any worse than pedo Pete?
One of their best lyrics.
Yes. It means so much today, 50 years later.
I remember at the time thinking that this had to be a Bob Dylan song that the Stones were covering. I was surprised and delighted to learn that it was a Jagger Richards song. There seemed to be no end to what these two geniuses could accomplish.

But his choirboy days were over five years later when his voice changed.
Mick took Marianne Faithful's hat off! Then she tried to hide her face (but was laughing too)
She was totally high
Keith is thought of primarily for his guitar playing and song writing...But this video shows how important his singing and spot on harmonies were and are to the sound of the Stones.
He sang perfect harmony with Mick throughout the 60's and 70's, his vocals were so important to their sound, as well as his guitar playing and songwriting. He is a legend.

Just another Stones masterpiece not TOO well known to the public...but if the Beatles sang this it would have gone to NO 1...Moreover, the MAGNIFICIENT LYRICS these guys come up with is just stunning....it is almost like some mystic rock-n-roll power must be helping these guys...or else they are just simply very very intelligent....There are many groups out there with impressive lyrics...but the Stones have so many songs is what sets them apart. That is what makes it very difficult to achieve...I wish there was a new band out there that WOULD NOT COPY THEM....but had the same raw talent for the next 50 years....and we could see where that would go...However...once-in-lifetime or maybe even millennium...who knows..
Absolutely correct.
