    Perry is a GOAT. The earlier “Escape” album was a little edgier and raw, two of my faves are “Stone in love” and “Lay it down” where I swear he goes up 4 more notes than “worlds apart.” (impossible you say?). Plus 3 slower songs including “open arms.” Few bands could both rock and ballad as well as Journey, maybe Toto was close.

    Steve Perry is such a great singer. I get goosebumps when he hits that high note in the chorus right before the guitar lead.
    The guitar solo is over the chorus (times 2).
    Then, over the synth doing the opening riff, there's another synth giving you that alien vibe (in addition to a short little lead guitar lick). Really catchy, all the way around. Great stuff. I love how the lead guitarist is so melodic. I'm more of a fan of a guitar solo that tells a musical story with melodic ideas, as opposed to shredding and flexing. (To each his own; both require skill.)
    I think this was the first thing I learned on the first synth I ever bought in the 80s. 😃
    Steve Perry's voice really shines in "Lights", a medium-tempo song that also lets the harmony vocals stand out.

  • @Pokyhawk
    @Pokyhawk Před 2 lety +9

    The thing that makes this song so unique for me is very deeply buried in the rhythm of the guitar. Neal Schon plays only one chord through most of the verses but varies the strumming count and direction (up-stroke versus down-stroke within the count) about every measure. The progression he uses puts the main rhythm of the song onto the guitar putting the drums and bass secondary. This was the first song I ever heard that utilizes that technique so masterfully. It gives the back-beat a special power I have yet to feel from any other song.
    After Jay talked about Steve Perry's voice holding the high notes I couldn't wait for the end of this song to come up. I could see in both of your faces, you loved the closing as much as I knew you would. Thank you for making my day a little brighter.

    "Whoever's on the drums is just killing it . . ." That was Steve Smith, who played with Jean-Luc Ponty, Montrose, and Focus before joining Journey in the late 70s and then went on to lead his own jazz fusion band, Vital Information, in the 80s and onward. He has played with many other jazz, fusion, rock, and metal artists through the years, and has rejoined Journey a couple of times in the intervening years.

    Drummer Steve Smith is probably one of the 100 greatest drummers of all time - he was voted the Drummer's drummer of the year by his peers several times in the 80s. Only marginally behind Neil Peart in the pantheon of greats

    Journey is not a one trick pony. Despite Steve Perry being dubbed the Voice and his amazing abilities to Croon and making it cool for Rock Bands and their Frontman to perform and write the Rock Ballad, they are all over the map musically and so diverse from hard hitting Rock to showing their Soul and R& B side. They honored their growing up influenced by the music coming off the Radio in a song and Album Title of the same: Raised on Radio. They mention many artists they were highly influenced by as musicians. Another hard hitting tune off of the same recording Separate Ways came from is Edge of the Blade as well as Back Talk. Can't Tame the Lion from Trial by Fire, Where Were You, Line of Fire, Precious Time from Departure. So much you guys have left to explore. Journey is one band where the songwriting chemistry and hit making with Perry/Schon/Rolie/Cain was really something. There is not one bad song aby them on any Album. You can listen to all recordings back to back and every track is phenomenal and diverse. Even their very early days with Steve joining the band show off their Rock Side with songs like La Do Da and Lovin You is Easy. They are really worth the dive into their amazing music catalog. I know many often sugtgest the same tunes from Escape or Frontiers on these platforms but back in the day AOR radio dove into deeper Album tracks and some of theri best tunes weren't even their single releases or hits.

    You know Steve never got married and he said it was because his parents had such a bad marriage. Like most Journey hit songs, Jonathon Cane (the keyboardist)
    and Steve Perry wrote this song. Jonathon Cane's broken marriage was the muse for a lot of Journey breakup songs.

    The line is actually “break those chains that bind you”
    This is still an emotionally-charged song that’s related to relationships, but it’s more of an upbeat rock tempo and driving rhythm.
    Perhaps their most rocking track is “La Do Da”…. But they have a lot of great songs that are radio friendly….which is a good way to put it, I think.

    As hugely popular as Journey was in the late 70s and 80s, I still feel they’re an underrated and unfairly maligned band. So many good and great songs, and much more than their big hits. Some of my favorites: Of A Lifetime & Look Into The Future (cool, spacey vibes pre-Steve Perry), Feeling That Way/Anytime (listen to them together, Perry’s first album with Journey), When You’re Alone It Ain’t Easy (Perry and the band kill this rocker), Any Way You Want It (big hit), Where Were You (lesser known rocker), Who’s Crying Now (big hit and just a fantastic song), Still They Ride (beautiful song, really everything on Escape is awesome), Only The Young (big anthem), Girl Can’t Help It, Message Of Love (Perry’s last album with the band), Signs Of Life (now in the post-Steve Perry era), Faith In The Heartland and City Of Hope (with their latest singer, Arnel Pineda, I really like this one). Go enjoy!

      One thing I think that hurts Journey is Don't Stop Believing. It has been used - and overused - so often, with a thousand bad karaoke renditions - that I think people have Journey fatigue. Also doesn't help that a lot of the Journey mvs aren't the best (with Separate Ways being one of the all-time worst mvs). Another band in the same position is Styx (who probably was Journey's biggest rival for this style of rock/pop) - and another band that has friction between the lead singer and the rest of the band.
