It's kind of a sad story. Perry suffered a bad hip injury while hiking in Hawaii. He didn't want to rush into surgery, but with a big tour coming up, his bandmates asked him to have the surgery. Perry refused, and this led to him leaving the band permanently. OF NOTE - this happened in the late 90s, WELL after the release of this song in 1984. To be clear, Steve was still in the band at the time of this song and video's release. It was just a side project he did between Journey albums, and it spawned three other hits, "She's Mine", "Strung Out", and "Foolish Heart". "Foolish Heart" is probably the one that got the most airplay besides this one.

That was the 2nd time he left.
The first time, he was burnt out, his mother had recently died, and he was having creative differences.
When the hip issue came up and he wouldn't go on tour that 2nd time, the band saw it as a power play so rather than have him go on hiatus, they officially replaced him.

For me, he's number one for sure. You could certainly attribute this to nostalgia because it's been my favourite band since I was 12-13 years old, but hey, to each their own! I can definitely appreciate other male vocalists that are perhaps more technical, heck even... "better", but Steve Perry with Journey was a force beyond comprehension in how their songs felt so nostalgic even if it was your first hearing.

In 1982, Journey guitarist, Neal Schon, was making projects outside of the band, which prompted Steve to make a solo album in 1984 (Street Talk). Returned to Journey at the end of the year, and they worked on their next album, Raised On Radio. In 1987, he was burnt out after nearly 10 years of recording and touring along with his mother dying, so he quit the band in mid-tour. He came back in late 1995, after touring for his second solo album (For the Love of Strange Medicine (1994)). His last album with Journey was released in October 1996 (Trial by Fire), and he injured his hip while hiking in Hawaii shortly after. He held off on surgery, which prompted the band to fire him 1998, after Trial by Fire fell off the charts. He holds a grudge against the members of the band, whom he felt were sticking their noses in his business with the surgery and then firing him, and he's been a solo artist ever since.

Love this song Steve left the band because he said in an interview he was burned out and wanted to take a break and the band wanted to keep touring he also said he was just not feeling what he was singing anymore.

I heard Steve address the animosity between him and the band in a radio interview. In the interview, he stated that he had become the chief songwriter and the band relied on him to create hits for them. One day he just had enough of this (the pressure) and it caused bad blood between him and the group, so, he walked away.

Journey was a band that had a singer b4 Steve but it was Steve's voice ND him that made journey global, but there was friction w/him and his band after several years but the Hawaii injury is really what did it in foe them all..

Open Arms is a must as far as power ballads go, and a great display of Steve Perry's voice. I still get emotional when I hear it all those years later.

Search Professor Of Rock and look for his video "the band hated his girlfriend, redeems her with this 80's hit" (something like that) if you want to know what happened, among other interesting Steve Perry things. As for request, recent Steve We're Still Here

At this point, Steve hadn't left Journey. This was just a hiatus from Journey for a solo album in 1984. He rejoined them for a couple of more Journey albums in 1986 and 1996. He recorded more solo albums in 1994 and 2018, plus a Christmas album in 2021. Basically Steve was in Journey from 1977-87 and 1995-98.

When Steve did this song, he was still with Journey. I saw Journey in Seattle in 1986, and they played this song, even though it wasn't officially a Journey song. Great show. The Outfield was their opener. You might like them too.

The “VOICE” of all time. There is no one like Steve Perry. Seeing journey live many times was so great! He was just as good of not better live!! There was really no bad blood woth the band. He was burnt out and walked away. I know I was so disappointed but HIS MENTAL HEALTH was more important and I respect that!

There's a "behind the music" documentary on vh1 that will answer your questions. If you watch the original video of this song, you'll see his real girlfriend he was singing to. Sherry was so pretty. She's also party of the documentary. Highly recommend it! From the documentary, you'll see why the Journey song "Only the Young" is my favorite song by them.

Sharing the title of 'The Voice' with legend John Farnham, Steve's vocals work as well solo as with Journey. From this album 'Street Talk', to backing vocals on Irish folk group Clannad's track 'White Fool'. He truly is an amazingly diverse vocalist.

Steve Perry never felt like he was a part of the journey. He felt like an outcast and they all argue all the time about what songs are we’re going to sing and everything else he just felt like an outcast but he was the lead singer.

Steve Perry: an exceptional voice, a signed voice (vocal signature). I suggest another, this one coming from the register of the abyss of the soul. She will make you tremble, you will vibrate just as much but above all, deeply: Leonard Cohen, "You Want It Darker". The music, the lyrics... You won't come out unscathed!

The voice of a pure Angel.
    Perfect vocals in every way.
That section in the beginning.. when the music cuts out and Steve sings.
    Makes me catch my breath.
The knees get weak..goosebumps the entire time!.
Ever since the very first time.. I ever heard this song.
Stopped me dead in my tracks..motionless
    and speechless.
    All from his talent.
I was only 10 when this came out and STILL..I have the same reaction.
