How To Identify & Test A FAKE / Counterfeit SanDisk Memory Card

  • In this video I show you some tail tail signs of a fake memory card.
This is a really good fake - it states that it is a "32GB" memory card when plugged into the computer but actually is only a 7.8GB card with much slower read write speed.
To test your own memory card / USB stick, use this tool - www.softpedia.com/get/System/S...
I would urge you all to report any fake memory cards directly to SanDisk, the retailer & the authorities - I had my seller shut down within a couple of days which in turn has stopped innocent people from being ripped off!

Are you able to show the original and fake side by side? Merely just describing the fake one isn't too helpful...

WhY , O... Why didn't you show the genuine pack along side so everyone could see the difference ...............

Sorry about that! It was my first "how to"... but yes, I should have!

I know this is 2 years ago... but pointing out small details like this really needed you to prop the camera up on something (I actually own a mini tripod, cheap as on eBay) and zoom in. I literally still do not know what you mean about the "line being bigger on one side than the other" at the start, are you talking about the packaging, the card itself? It's impossible to see whatever it is, even running full screen at 1080p. Thank you for the video though, it still contained a lot of useful info.

thank you for taking the time to do this vid, I have been a loyal and long time professional user of Sandisk products, My confidence in there products is badly shaken and i will sadly look to alternatives - kingston appears to have much better anti counterfeit controls via their “Phantom Technology and Color-Shift “ to better ID there products - slower cards but hey at least i know what i got !

All Memory Card Brand Names Are being Counterfeited, TEST your card with a Memory Test Utility such as h2testw.exe BEFORE YOU LEAVE eBay FEEDBACK. .

Thanks for the vid. Was actually watching an identical one on e-bay but after watching your vid I think i'll give it a miss and buy one from 7dayshop. Gonna check they're an official Sandisk supplier first though.
And thanks for the link to the test programme :)

Why didn't you just check the serial code on Sandisk website

It's a minefield just trying to find a bloody memory card these days.
I'm currently looking for a 32gb micro to support 4k.
Got a fake off ebay. Doesn't even work.

People wont know its a fake until they start losing data, and then they may possibly blame their own device 1 month later. Sandisk need an authenticity check system in place.

Did you get a refund on amazon? don't they have support better than ebay?

  • @marccawood
    @marccawood Před 7 lety

I fell into the same trap. Some other indications I noticed:
    1) Card said "Made in Taiwan" whilst the packaging said "Made in China"
    2) Windows showed a blue/white icon for the card and said "O2Micro" and nothing about SanDisk or it's red/gray branding
    DUD

I think that people ought to exercise greater caution about the goods they buy.
If the offer seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. Where ebay is concerned I would now be reluctant to buy SD cards.
I have had several cards from ebay in the past and ran them all through the H2testw software as well as Crystal Disk Mark. C.D.M. can measure the random-write speed.
Camcorders do not write data sequentially to the card. Jumpy or freezing video is often evidence the camera can't write to the card fast enough.

I bought 5 of these Micro SDHC Class 10 32GB Memory Cards from China sellers. I tested them all before trying to use them. They were purchased from 5 different sellers in China. ALL 5 TESTED at less than 8GB. So far I have been refunded from 4 sellers and I'm waiting for the 5th seller to refund. 4 of the 5 adapters that came with these micro cards were good but the 5th was bad. They were all sold as Class 10 but none of them performed at the speed a Class 10 should perform at. All were much slower. I did purchase an 8GB Micro Card without an adapter. After I ran the test on that one it checked GOOD.
I used SDFormatter by TRENDY Co. to first format the card and then I tested the cards with the program H2testw which writes to the card, and if it goes through the writing process without a failure then it will automatically initiate a verifying process to see how many files were actually written to the card. A report will be generated after testing is completed.
I used Google to find these 2 programs
It is a good idea to not leave feedback for seller until you thoroughly test the products you purchase. I never did, but now I always wait until I have confirmed that what I buy is actually good. Those 5 sellers got 5 star good feedback but if I could change it to 1 star I would. But it is too late now I cannot change my feedback for them.

What is the program that you run the test on the SD card.

The hologram on the Memory card is a clear giveaway that its a fake card..i was similarly cheated over eBay with a fake Sony battery charger, which too had a hologram in chinese language & had no serial no. whatsoever. sandisk should put a genuine validation system on their website.

This is why I only get SD cards from local suppliers. Far too easy to get fakes from ebay/amazon. I pay an extra few dollars, but I get the real thing.
