  • This is a beautiful example of a frame up restoration on a 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS Bubble Top. This is 1 of 118 SS versions of the bubble top made in 1961. Many thanks to Gary for letting me ride along and share his amazing car with you.

I love the 61 impalas. My dad bought one new and I remember it well. He’ll be 95 this fall.

My father bought one, brand new, exactly like yours from Erwin Chevrolet in Philadelphia PA.(!961) I drove it to my senior prom and more people came out to the parking lot just to see the car.

That's awesome. I can see people doing that. Impressive cars attract people. Should have just had the prom in the parking lot.

Should the SS. 1n 1961 have a grab bar?

There were six 61 bubble top lightweights built with the two four 409 and 4 speeds. A guy named John Munford owns three of the six

@@RobertsRideAlong I got a private tour of his car collection in 2015.
He had 110 cars. They're all perfect.

It seems like EVERYONE has a ‘61 SS.
In fact, there are more ‘61 SS’s now,
    then back in 1961!
SS package was a dealer add on
You could have a 1961 Impala
pillared sedan with a 6 cylinder
    as an SS. CB
    Unless you have dealership
    documentation, you got a fake.

    • @RobertsRideAlong
      @RobertsRideAlong  Před rokem

It's documented, and he sold it for an amazing price because of that. There are a lot of cars now that never were made. It's a shame and should be a crime

The accepted production figures for 1961:
    Approximately 178,000 'bubbletops' produced.
453 Factory assembled Super Sports. Not all were bubbletops...any body style of an Impala (2 door sedan, 4 door sedan, 4 door hardtop, 2 door hardtop, convertible) could be ordered with the SS package. I have never seen a breakdown of production numbers for SS versus body type but I would imagine that most Super Sports were 2 door hardtops (bubbletops).
142 Super Sports with 360 HP 409 engine. All others with various HP versions (305 HP - 350 HP) of 348 CID engine.
To me this car looks like a standard 61 Impala 2 door hardtop with a reproduction 'SS' emblem on the trunk lid. The other 'SS' features are either missing or can't be seen in the video.

That's amazing. I didn't know all of those numbers. The gentleman who owned it had all of the factory paperwork for the car, but I don't remember what it said. He ended up selling it, and because the paperwork went with it he got a good price. Thank you for sharing this information with me. Very interesting to learn about it.

Almost every 61 2dr impala was a bubble top. Not biscayne and bel airs went both ways

Lol his numbers of production are off a tad. And all two door hardtops had that roof. Makes me gag when they're called bubbletop. Dont know what goof came up with that term but its dumb. I have a 61 btw.
