  • Nels Cline is best known as the lead guitarist in the band Wilco. His recording and performing career-spanning jazz, rock, punk, and experimental-is well into its fourth decade, with over 200 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. Cline has received many accolades including Rolling Stone anointing him as both one of 20 “new guitar gods” and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time.
Beyond Wilco, Cline performs in a duo project with guitarist Julian Lage in addition to a quartet, The Nels Cline 4 (featuring Lage plus bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Tom Rainey); collaborates with his partner Yuka Honda as the duo CUP; performs as Stretch Woven with percussionist Scott Amendola; leads The Nels Cline Singers (featuring Amendola plus bassist Trevor Dunn and percussionist Cyro Baptista); and plays with Stained Radiance (an improvisational live project with performance painter Norton Wisdom). Cline also periodically presents concerts of his concept album Lovers, which involves a 17-person ensemble and collaborates with dozens of composers/improvisers.

Nels Cline describing one of the greatest guitar solos of all time as "and then I played a bunch of stuff" is absolutely amazing

met him after his ''Stained Radiance'' show at Eddie's Attic w Norton. A wonderful gent, and he absolutely slays the guitar. That particular show changed my life. I've seen him w Wilco several times, and he never disappoints. I get a lot of inspiration from Nels, he's a Wizard.

Impossible Germany is to me the main reason I pay for the ticket. It is a perfect song. Impossible not to play on a show:)

The Jazz Free disc with Nels, Henry Kaiser, Weasel Walter, etc is fantastic. Really one of the best albums any of them have ever made.

From memory it’s a partscaster. The body is a 58 or early 59. Forget the neck specs. Duncan Antiquity 1 pickups, 250k pots, mastery hardware.
It’s his main guitar for his solo stuff these days. It lives with him in NYC whereas the Watt JM stays with the Wilco gear.

Nels is a true legend. His recent "Share The Wealth" album was so adventurous. I hope Wilco get back to showcasing more of his wizardry on record in future. Wilco's last few albums have been pretty dull affairs where his guitar pyrotechnics have been sidelined.

Share the Wealth is some of the best music I’ve heard in recent years. Amazing.

I found the two last albums were really interesting. Wilco is a band, it's not only about one member or even jeff !

Nels adds so much texture and atmosphere to Wilco’s music, not just blistering guitar solos. He hasn’t been ignored in the recent albums and they’re far from dull. I think Nels really values being part of an artistic and creative ensemble rather than being the guitar slinging center of attention.

The presenter should have put down his foot. The only think I could see at the opening is the bottom his shoe. And the camera showed Nels' face out of focus for much of the interview. Apart from that, I can't get enough of Nels' music and wisdom. A true innovator like very very few.
