No.. we knew we had predatory men back in the 70s. Had an elderly neighbor that wasn’t legally allowed to have a camera. He would take pictures of kids then try to lure them into his house to see the pictures and then try to molest them. Everyone knew but because he was old, the courts didn’t do anything. He would also send postcards in the mail to kids he was targeting.
In the book at the end the lovely bones represent the connections between all the people that was involved in her life and how they grew in her absence, at least that is what I remember.
In the book, the r*pe is described in graphic detail. There was going to be a more violent/ assault scene in the movie as well, but Stanley Tucci couldn't do it. He hated his character, and the assault scene was too much for him, so they only implied it in the film. This movie is just... devastating.

Which is perfect. When an assault is portrayed graphically it just becomes trauma porn. This was the way to go. Its implied perfectly well, and its just as heartbreaking without capitalizing on the violence that way. It is 1000 times scarier and bone chilling to see him smell the rag of blood without showing the violence to the child.

The writers shouldn’t have ever had in the script to begin with. Soso glad Tucci had the power to say no and be listened. In the book the sexual assault is graphic because is a retelling of the author’s own assault (the author’s case is a lot more complicated and for racist reasons they blamed her case on an innocent man for many years. I think it was around 2019 when they finally proved the guy’s innocence through DNA testing. Super sad case, very different). But the content of the author of the novel vs how it translates on film shows the importance of people rewriting adaptations to another medium. It would have cheapened the film and their message if a graphic assault scene had been shown.

Which is why Mr. Harvey died the way he did. Also- I can’t believe that I picked up this book and read it as a 13 year old. It was a tragic and heartbreaking story, like a train wreck that I couldn’t look away from, but it’s still one of my favorite books to this day.
There’s a scene in the book where the family dog, Holiday, passes away and reunites with Suzie in the In-Between. Had me bawling my eyes out reading it and it’s the one scene from the book I wish they had included in the movie.
Doesn't change the fact that she was still SA'd by *someone*. Therefore we should put our negative feelings onto the actual perpetrator rather than the traumatised young woman who under pressure from authorities chose the wrong man. But yes, I agree, he does need some compensation.

This movie always makes me cry. My heart breaks knowing there's people like Mr Harvey all over the world, and that there's so many missing kids that have never been found.
This is a movie - remember in real life this happens too. Many people never see loved ones again. Having been followed as a full grown adult female with karate belts, it is still very scary. I was lucky to be alert (always am), I cannot imagine what it would even be for little kids. This is mild compared to what is going on in real life.
I first saw this movie in high school my teacher put it on for the last day of school, I cried and was honestly upset but it really made me realize, there’s not always a happy ending

Speaking of what happened to the guy in the end, there was a real-life case of a man who took a woman's life but was acquitted. In the end, he passed away in a freak accident in which he crashed through a glass coffee table in his house and bled out. The irony is that he'd tortured her while she lay on a glass coffee table. He had absolutely done the crime, but pictures of what he had done weren't discovered until after he was acquitted, and because of double jeopardy, he couldn't be tried again.
I break down crying every time I see all the little girls, makes me think of real victims out there that are just children like them 💔💔they are so pure and innocent in a damn cruel world. 💔💔
this movie traumatized me, like, TRAUMATIZED me. I first watched it when I was 13 (I'm 20 now) and as a child victim of s*xual abuse, it completely broke me, I remember crying for so many hours after finishing it. (still cry till this day lol I cried 3 times during this reaction)
As a parent, I could only watch this movie once. The grief is overwhelming and I just can’t sit with that for too long. Thank you for this video Chu! Your empathy and humor is everything 💛

Such an incredible film, and I do get that some people hate it because they think the ending isn’t fair or they think the kiss is silly. Mr. Harvey’s death was anticlimactic, but the impact it had on the family, was accurate. In real life, when you’re the family of a murder victim and the case is solved - after the trial, everything else is the same… the killer goes to prison, But the damage is done. So for Susie, I think it’s possible a teenage soul would be more excited about finally getting first kiss, than getting justice against someone who can’t even hurt them any more.
I'm crying with you 😢 I sometimes get caught up researching missing person cases.. I just can't comprehend the way some kids just vanish. They are such innocent spirits, this movie perfectly depicts this

Another devastating yet beautiful movie is Bridge to Terabithia, it stars Josh Hutcherson (Peeta from the hunger games) and Anna Sophia Robb (violet from The Chocolate Factory) as the main characters!
This is one of the few movies that makes me feel physically ill but i still watch because its so brilliantly done and the acting is top tier from tucci as the villain, mark and rachel as grieving parents, all the children/young actors were especially brilliant given their age, the cinematography and set design is just, ugh everything about this movie is so visceral and real, truly a moment of cinematic greatness
The book is really good too. Tucci definitely deserved his Oscar nomination for this movie. I had creepy dreams the first time I saw this because of his performance
I remember my dad watched this movie with my sisters and I and he said the next morning he had trouble sleeping that night because he couldn’t stop thinking about this movie. He said he kept thinking about my sisters and I, and telling me that if anyone ever hurt us he’d do everything in his power to get revenge.

The 2009 film adaptation of Sebold's 2002 novel of the same name explores themes of grief, loss, and healing, and the emotional complexities of trauma. Sebold herself was a victim of sexual assault, which influenced the film's exploration of those themes.

It adds tension, but his interest in the sister wasn't in the book and isn't part of his MO, which was to go after a diverse a range of victims to avoid suspicion.

The fact they never found her or caught her killer is sick, but it also symbolizes how in real life sometimes the killer isn’t always caught and justice doesn’t always come. but I just want you to know whoever reads this that even though Justice might not always be served the truth will eventually come out maybe not today or tomorrow, but it will eventually and until then God will punish those who take and kill and will follow them until the end of their days, and they will suffer for what they’ve done😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤ I feel sorry for Susie because she seemed like such an amazing person, and she did not deserve to be killed. I hope she can rest in peace, knowing that her killer will be killed, but unlike her he will not be remembered and will be forgotten for what he’s done to not only her and her family but to many others.
That’s why Alice wrote this book, it was for all the little girls and women who haven’t been found or their killers haven’t been found and got their justice. She was giving them a voice in a way

I know some people hate her because she wrongfully convicted a man that was innocent, but she was raped. She just didn’t know that it wasn’t the same person. I’m not saying that what she did was right and I know what she did was but she was raped, but they just don’t know who did it and she probably thought it was him.
Susie was trying to send a sign to her dad with the rose(in the book it didn’t bloom) in the movie, I guess he just put two and two together. Love this movie and loved seeing your emotions. This was a tough one.

My mother showed me this as at 11 years old after i went into a strangers house that had just moved in a couple of streets away,to play with their daughter without telling her and was missing for hours. I didn't come home till late at night she had been looking for me,had all the neighbours out, rang the police every thing, Safe to say i never did anything of the sort after watching this movie It was a educational experience and also made me wort of realise life and death,how it affects everyone around us ❤
I remember when I was very young and the YMCA took all the kids to the movie theaters for a field trip and we watched this. Lmfao I don't think they knew what they were sending us to watch. 😂❤ I loved it though but other kids were crying and stuff 😂

Watched this movie on dvd as a teen with my mum and loved how hauntingly beautiful it was...my mum however asked me never to put it on again when she was around haha understandable I related to Suzie alot because I can be quite naïve and people-pleaser I probably would've done exactly what she did in that situation at her age which is terrifying Also I haven't seen anyone else mention it so want to appreciate the way peter jackson decided to portray the limbo that suzie was in, it was perfect and held up so well after all these years because the cgi doesn't need to be perfect it's a fantastical abstract looking place with so much vibrancy - I never could bring myself to read the book but book fans please let me know if it matches how it's described!

The first time I ever saw this movie I got sick and had to go to bed. I had to wait a few more years before I tried watching it again. When I did, I was able to get through it. Such a great, impactful film.

this movie traumatized me, like, TRAUMATIZED me. I first watched it when I was 13 (I'm 20 now) and as a child victim of s*xual abuse, it completely broke me, I remember crying for so many hours after finishing it. (still cry till this day lol I cried 3 times during this reaction)

Haven’t watched yet but I LITERALLY had to get snacks and get comfy for this. THIS MOVIE is what saved me from getting kidnapped. My mom and I watched this move together and it taught me not to trust any older man. I hope u enjoy it!!!!

Such an incredible film, and I do get that some people hate it because they think the ending isn’t fair or they think the kiss is silly.
Mr. Harvey’s death was anticlimactic, but the impact it had on the family, was accurate. In real life, when you’re the family of a murder victim and the case is solved - after the trial, everything else is the same… the killer goes to prison, But the damage is done.
So for Susie, I think it’s possible a teenage soul would be more excited about finally getting first kiss, than getting justice against someone who can’t even hurt them any more.
This is one of my favorite movies. It's so heartbreaking but so visually stunning and mesmerizing.

This is one of the few movies that makes me feel physically ill but i still watch because its so brilliantly done and the acting is top tier from tucci as the villain, mark and rachel as grieving parents, all the children/young actors were especially brilliant given their age, the cinematography and set design is just, ugh everything about this movie is so visceral and real, truly a moment of cinematic greatness
I love that the movie ends with a happy/hopeful song
The book is really good too. Tucci definitely deserved his Oscar nomination for this movie. I had creepy dreams the first time I saw this because of his performance
I remember my dad watched this movie with my sisters and I and he said the next morning he had trouble sleeping that night because he couldn’t stop thinking about this movie. He said he kept thinking about my sisters and I, and telling me that if anyone ever hurt us he’d do everything in his power to get revenge.

It adds tension, but his interest in the sister wasn't in the book and isn't part of his MO, which was to go after a diverse a range of victims to avoid suspicion.
This movie is so sad and heartbreaking. The fact they never found her or caught her killer is sick, but it also symbolizes how in real life sometimes the killer isn’t always caught and justice doesn’t always come. but I just want you to know whoever reads this that even though Justice might not always be served the truth will eventually come out maybe not today or tomorrow, but it will eventually and until then God will punish those who take and kill and will follow them until the end of their days, and they will suffer for what they’ve done😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤ I feel sorry for Susie because she seemed like such an amazing person, and she did not deserve to be killed. I hope she can rest in peace, knowing that her killer will be killed, but unlike her he will not be remembered and will be forgotten for what he’s done to not only her and her family but to many others.
That’s why Alice wrote this book, it was for all the little girls and women who haven’t been found or their killers haven’t been found and got their justice. She was giving them a voice in a way
@@RS-bn1ty yeah that’s why I like the message of the book. That’s honestly a really good message that you can give anyone and she wrote the book in such an amazing way. I know some people hate her because she wrongfully convicted a man that was innocent, but she was raped. She just didn’t know that it wasn’t the same person. I’m not saying that what she did was right and I know what she did was but she was raped, but they just don’t know who did it and she probably thought it was him.
This movie is so deeply upsetting but visually beautiful, I've watched it once all the way through and was an absolute sobbing mess by the end.

I work at a domestic violence organization and study forensic psychology. This movie hits hard knowing how many girls and women are brutally murdered.
Stanley tucci actually said in an interview that he felt really weirded out about this roll and after every take he would apologize profusely... And made sure she was ok and not uncomfortable!!
How ridiculous! Did he forget he was an actor then? What pathetic behaviour. Didn't he know what role he was going to be playing when he accepted it and the fee? I don't think Anthony Perkins was ludicrously apologising every 5 seconds to Janet Leigh when they were making 'Psycho'....

I’m so excited to watch! One of my favourite films and my favourite book. Makes me cry every time.
My mother showed me this as at 11 years old after i went into a strangers house that had just moved in a couple of streets away,to play with their daughter without telling her and was missing for hours.
I didn't come home till late at night she had been looking for me,had all the neighbours out, rang the police every thing,
Safe to say i never did anything of the sort after watching this movie

Watched this movie on dvd as a teen with my mum and loved how hauntingly beautiful it was...my mum however asked me never to put it on again when she was around haha understandable
I related to Suzie alot because I can be quite naïve and people-pleaser I probably would've done exactly what she did in that situation at her age which is terrifying
Also I haven't seen anyone else mention it so want to appreciate the way peter jackson decided to portray the limbo that suzie was in, it was perfect and held up so well after all these years because the cgi doesn't need to be perfect it's a fantastical abstract looking place with so much vibrancy - I never could bring myself to read the book but book fans please let me know if it matches how it's described!

Please take care of yourself after watching things like this. ❤ It’s a beautiful story with a bittersweet ending, but the reality of it can sneak up on you. I used to watch a lot of true crime, and it just really took a toll on my mental health after a while.

The first time I ever saw this movie I got sick and had to go to bed. I had to wait a few more years before I tried watching it again. When I did, I was able to get through it. Such a great, impactful film.

Whats crazy is that i watched this as a child and it really really stuck with me. Like i was obsessed with this movie and would often say it was my fav fil. It still is one of them. Now it makes me cry and feel sad in a more deep way i would say but i still love it
I first watched this movie when I was 11, when it came out, with my mom and my cousin. Neither of them knew at the time but it always hit me hard because the predator looks so much like the one in my childhood. They all did a great job in their roles.
This was so sad to me, like I bawled my eyes out for days after seeing this movie and reading the book.

the only other movie related to child trauma that really fucked with me has to be an american crime with elliot page and catherine keener; that movie requires such a strong stomach for not even being a gory horror. for me it’s harder to watch than this but stanley tucci really stuck with me for a good while as a kid

The Girl Next Door is also based on the Sylvia Likens case, but on the book written by Jack Ketchum. An American Crime is based on the actual court documents. Both are incredibly horrifying.
