  • History shows that the early church generally baptized by trine immersion, except in cases of serious sickness, where pouring was considered acceptable. Although the Orthodox Church still practices trine immersion, few Evangelical, Protestant, or Anabaptist churches do. Here, we see a German Baptist baptism done in conscious imitation of the Apostolic and early Christian method.
Notice that the immersion is done by bending forward. Most Baptists today baptize by backwards immersion. However, the first historical record of a backwards immersion was that of Thomas Muntzer, in 1522. The first historical record of single (as opposed to trine, or triple) immersion was of the heretic Eunomius, in the 4th century. Single immersion was widely condemned as an innovation at that time.
The second question asked of the one being baptized is, "Do you renounce Satan and all of his wicked ways and the sinful pleasures of this life?" This theme hearkens back to at least the late second century as Tertullian recorded, "When we are going to enter the water, but a little before, in the presence of the congregation and under the hand of the president, we solemnly profess that we disown the devil, and his pomp, and his angels" (De Corona, III). The Apostolic Constitutions has it as: "I renounce Satan, and his works, and his pomps, and his worships, and his angels, and his inventions, and all things that are under him " (ANF, vii. 476).

I’ve heard these passages cited as to why the OGBBC church practices Trine immersion.
