Steering wheel & ignition key won't turn? EASILY solved in seconds!

If you can't turn your ignition key when trying to start your car then don't force it. You won't be able to turn the steering wheel either. The steering column lock has probably been engaged. It's an anti-theft device and is standard on most cars.
It's easy to disengage the steering lock and turn the ignition key again and get driving. All you need to do is gently turn the key as you normally would and turn the steering wheel to the left and right a couple of times until the key turns normally. Don't force anything.
So if your car key won't turn and steering wheel is locked then this is the solution.
If you're taking driving lessons and have a driving test coming up soon then hopefully this video will help with the learning to drive process.

I've been surprised how few Brits use it. You can fail the German driving test if you forget to engage it! (Probably not if it's the only thing you've gone wrong.) And allegedly German insurance companies won't pay out if they can prove that the lock wasn't locked (hard to prove though).

The steering wheel felt so locked in place & the key wouldn’t turn at all so I was like, “no way this is gonna work.” Then when that worked like 100x faster & easier than I expected I was so amazed I was glad this happened just so I could learn this lol!

I remember this happened to me and I had no idea what was happening, its crazy most driving instructors never mention it. I thought there was something wrong with my car and spent about 5 minutes turning the key over and over until someone explained it to me.

@J Jones I am willing to bet that the majority of the instructors don't even know about this....they teach how to drive, not to fix and most of them are school teachers....back many many moons ago (lol) our Drivers Ed teach was also our PE and my girls basketball coach...my kids drivers Ed teachers were also their school teachers...

This was perfect, to the point and with an explanation of what caused it. An unruly kid went to town on my steering wheel playing with the horn. I put the key and nothing! I then waited, leaned on the steering wheel to think, must have unconsciously turned it slightly like you explained and the next try with the key.....it worked! But I had no clue what happened so I searched it up, find your video and it makes perfect sense. Thank you!
