10:45 To clarify, I did not think this was a famous painting Universal had used. Obviously they used a print. When I first started looking I just thought it was a nice painting by a local Los Angeles artist that Universal had hung in Devonâs office. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Peri, it turns out that Edward Mulhare was himself actually quite fond of The Bridge of Narni. When the original Knight Rider ended in 1986, he asked to take the painting but apparently it was an expensive replica on loan from The Getty Center in Los Angeles. Not wanting to disappoint Mr. Mulhare, none other than David Hasselhoff asked his friend and local artist Mark King to make his own version. Sadly, when King heard that Knight Rider was cancelled, he soon collapsed into a life of drugs and crime. The painting he made was never found... or was it?

I watch almost the whole MacGyver series..... and Edward Mulhare was in Episode "Three for the Road" Season 2 (1986).... one of the few works I've seen of this actor....... good episode... he plays an elder actor that runs out of money.. going to L.A. looking for work... and "found" a bag full of cash....

@@RetroRecipes I think a Northern Telecom 'Displayphone' model: NT6K00AN would be a perfectly appropriate item to get for this channel. It can be seen on Devon's desk in the 3rd Season (Episode 49) finally showing how he communicated with Michael through K.I.T.T. using this retro 'Displayphone'. Even though in reality the Displayphone is not actually capable of live video calling it can often be seen in older sci-fi flicks representing a futuristic communications device with this function.

Put it on a wall and enjoy it for what it is, instead of being sad for what it's not.
I have a similar story. I bought a prop/costume item advertised to be used in Star Trek as a Klingon arm shield. Well after I got it, it didn't look like what was pictured. I started trying to verify it, it turned out to actually be part of an armored exoskeleton from Stargate. Actually a bit more valuable, but now I'm on the quest to find the rest of the armor suit.

Never stop looking for the amazing things in your life that you want. Proudly hang this one in the studio for all of us to appreciate please. If anything it is a representation of the original in honor of it. You also got to have an adventure, some hope, and an exciting time hunting down something you thought was real. @@RetroRecipes I have to admit, I might very well have done the same thing, too, under the circumstances, based on what you knew at the time. Of course, had I thought of estimating its size, I probably wouldn't have bothered, and neither would you, I bet, but that's the sort of thing we usually figure out later (a bit of "fridge logic" I suppose). If the same thing had happened to me, I would be hanging it up, too. It still represents something in _Knight Rider_ , it's still a nice painting, and you might as well get something out of it.

Thereâs something soothing about this guys voice and nerdy interest in retro stuff Donât worry about making a mistake now and then. Itâs disappointing when things donât work out but a least you can laugh at the experience instead of having a melt down. Cheers and Iâll keep watching this channel

We all bought things from auctions which were not what we hoped. But sometimes the items finds us at the right place and time. (Happend to me, when i was searching for over a year for the rare PAL commodore 1081 monitor: Found it near to me for 2 EUR). Nice painting by the way :)

What a roller coaster ride. Not many people in North America know the band Level 42; they might have been big in the UK but were actually bigger in The Netherlands (of all places). Had the pleasure to have a little conversation with Mark and his brother Nathan in late 2006 after the concert.
Funny enough Lessons In Love plays quite a lot on the radio in California. Though people may not know the band name.
They had at least two really big hits here in Canada. Lessons in Love and Something About You.
Peri, when I'm watching you or one of your colleagues repair a vintage computer, I enjoy watching the whole process, both successes and failures. This is the same thing. I don't consider it a waste of my time when a video ends and the computer isn't fixed yet and I don't consider this a waste of my time, either.

There's SOOO many opportunities now that never existed before! NOW, have you asked yourself this....WAS the painting in Devin's Office [set] ALSO a copy of the original? Very likely, indeed. And how many branches does it have on that same tuft of tree? Only our BluRay versions will tell us if anyone can... And yep...you go RIGHT there at 11:08 . That's how we do it! Keep going...

Thank you AJ! Youâre right of course. Alas I have analysed and compared the painting to the Blu-Ray rip and there are obvious differences. Iâm certain Devonâs was a print. Still fun that they copied the frame that the original has! Thatâs some attention to detail. Iâll keep up my search for something screen used⊠đ€
@@RetroRecipes Studio would have used a print for sure, and likely that frame is available online from some shop, so you can make the replica almost perfect, except in scale. After all, they likely did use whatever was in the Universal Studio warehouse to furnish the office, so likely your picture also featured in other Universal productions in that era as studio dressing, and afterwards were simply either sold on auction or put back in storage.
The frames on the other paintings are twice as thick/wide as the one you bought, that alone makes it smaller. Just have a custom frame made and use it as a placeholder until you get the real prop.
It's great for that story. Total roller-coaster ride indeed. Enjoy it.

I know I am late to the party, but I agree that there is still a lot to enjoy about this painting.
On the subject of art, this experience oddly made me think of Navajo rug weaving. The artist would deliberately leave an imperfection so that the part of their being entwined in the work had a way out. Learning about this years back really influenced my feelings about perfection itself.
If it was a perfect experience, it may not have been uniquely yours.

You certainly had us feeling the excitement, then the disappointment (and slight embarrassment) right there alongside you. I would still display it proudly, much like you might display a 3d-printed model or modern replica of a hard-to-find historical computer. a PiDP11 might not be an original PDP11, but it's still a damned fine piece to have in your collection. This painting is no different ;)

Love all the knight rider videos. I really enjoyed the show as a kid and even today.
Itâs still a very nice painting. Iâm sure the original prop is in storage somewhere. But, to at least have something in your house that symbolizes a treasured memory (or tv show) will always flood your remembrance with nostalgia.

So it's not the original but it's still a nice representation that pays homage to the show. How many people have one? Probably just you.
Prints were sometimes made on to canvas then varnished to give texture, called oilographs, it may be a print of a copy. But still nice you got the picture from the show, and added to the pool on Knight Rider knowledge.
It may be that the version used on Knight Rider wasn't even a painting, let alone a copy of a painting.
Many years ago I did the behind-the-scenes tour of the Warner Bros. Burbank studio, and was taken into the prop warehouse. It was apparently (so I got told) common practice (at least for WB productions) for the paintings you see on tv and in movies to actually be large photographic blow-ups, not real paintings. IIRC there's two reasons for this: (1) it's a damn sight cheaper to have a prop warehouse full of photo copies worth a few dollars each than the real things worth thousands. (2) Props can get damaged or tarnished when sets are erected, torn down, or during transit -- in which case you just go back to the photo negative and create a new blow-up to replace the old 'painting'.
I don't know if this was just a WB thing, of whether it was only for commonly used paintings, but I have a vague memory of being told that some of the most popular props (like portraits of Abe Lincoln, etc.) have to be replaced on a fairly regular basis, presumably because they aren't handled delicately and protected like a real painting when stored or moved.
I've been in the art world for a few decades, the painting was extremely recognisable and would be to anyone in that business, what surprises me is the online appraisal makes no mention of the original artist. It's either a fake valuation document or they have literally no idea what they're doing, interesting either way! You did miss some clues when using google image search as there are several other images and the wiki one shows the original, understandable to miss in the excitement though. What you've bought isn't a bad copy from a few paces away, put a period frame round it and enjoy it! A tip with old paintings, you can tell almost as much from the back of the canvas as the front.
Yep the appraiser definitely had no clue. I donât think itâs a fake appraisal though. And yes I was blinded by excitement when I missed those clues even though the screen recording captured them. Thanks for the info!
If itâs any comfort, we have all been there. You find this thing somewhere at sometime and your imagination takes the better of you. And than later reality sinks in. Well see it like this, a copy of the movie prop.
You over-estimated at 50 inches. I scaled the painting in Devon's office and got 23" x 36" compared to the floppy drive, papers, and desk height. So yours is only slightly smaller at 84% (keep in mind the tops of his trees are cropped by about an inch). Maybe you would find a similar frame to Devon's or 3D-print one.
Good work! Did you also try comparing it to the width of an IBM PC? Yes I noticed the cropping too. Interesting the things that are there to be found.
@@RetroRecipes Compared to the IBM XT, the painting still measures 36" wide. One of my hobbies is finding real movie/tv props and filming locations.
Well the original would be unaffordable anyway - finding the copy from the show would be very hard.

I have only seen one episode of Knight Rider when Kitt got amnesia and gets an engine upgrade.
This painting must have something to do with the KR Set. Maybe it is a (2.) backup painting that never appeared on screen? I mean, it doesnt matter because what makes this painting incredibly valuable is the story and the mystery behind it.
What do you do? You appreciate the painting for what it is, and for its nostalgic air, and you hang it in your office - right above your vintage IBM PC, like Devon did.
Find a frame that's the same as the on in KR. Then find the same monitor that's below the picture in KR, hang the pic up with the monitor below it, adding a plant to the right. Voila, an in shot hidden gem.
It's as close as you're going to get to the original. A print may be available but this is very cool.
Like a good Stoic you must find the silver lining or a story to tell - I think you have both because you have shown us that size does matter !

Maybe it was the lighting on the set and grainy NTSC recording, but the thing that stood out to me right away is the color saturation is very different from the ebay listed painting despite the composition similarity. This is even taking into account how other objects in the shot are impacted by the lighting on the set to my eye like the PC and the plant on the table. But then again, its really hard to say for sure. How cool would it have been if it was the same copy seen in the show? It's only human nature that we let our excitement get the best of us at times...

I think it has a high degree of success... because now it _WAS_ used as a on screen prop... in a CZcams video surrounding the lore of Devan's office and his paintings... so technically... yes, now _THAT_ painting has a history attached to it. I think you see where that is going (LOL, but now it's making me think more seriously about it)
I have been an antique phonograph collector and 78s too for 33 years now and I love knight rider historians because I grew up with the series guess what!? his son is a Phonophile like me! he's still quite young 9-10 maybe? I always like working with the younger generation there's sooo much they don't know about this hobby remember I still learn new things 33 years on!
I think he has a channel called knight rider fans and this channel subbed to mine so we'll see if further contact will be made.
Very cool. Wherever it came from it's a lovely picture. I think it's less stressful having a copy than the real one. Put it on the wall, I think the connection to Devon is the important bit, even if it's not the actual one! After all KITTs molecular bonded shell got dented one time by the small bone in a guys wrist when he hit him, it's all make believe in the end ;)

Even museums have different copies of the same painting, usually by the original artist, but still. A nice painting is a nice painting, and the subject of this one is a part of _Knight Rider_ .
@@RetroRecipes One question: if you had a choice between the real original painting or the one used in _Knight Rider_ , assuming they are not one in the same (because highly valuable original works of fine art aren't usually hung up in studio sets, I presume), which would you rather have? The frame in the show could be a copy, by the way.
Is it likely that the studio would have the original in the studio for filming, or a very good duplicate? Wilton Knight was meant to be very rich, but he was fictional. I think the studio copy will still be out there somewhere, assuming it wasn't scrapped. Chances are it was reused in other productions or hired from an agency which provided props to the industry.
You will probably need KITT to process the data.
This a very interesting insight into the operation of chance and fate here. It is still an impressive coincidence, if not the one you wanted.

My understanding is that once a show is wrapped up, the props are often just tossed out. Some shows have a good archival process where they keep things that might be re-used in some future show, but I'm guessing Knight Rider wasn't one of those, especially for something as non-iconic as a painting hanging in an office.
@@stevesether I probably would agree but that particular prop can be reused in various movies and sets as it got that classic painting feel to it.

Well... I think it's a matter of perspective. For example, no matter what you do to the Tesla, it will never be KITT in all aspects, but you can still enjoy the journey towards emulating KITT and reproducing the parts that speak to you about what KITT is. Here, you have a fun story, a smaller painting that'll be much easier to display than the larger one, an opportunity to try to tweak the frame to make it look more like the one on the show, and you can still enjoy the Knight Rider nostalgia even though it's not exactly what you expected or wanted. (After all, KRH can't really reno the trailer to be 1:1 match to the TV show since the semi interior was a set and not IN the trailer, but it will still have nostalgic value!)

To be honest, I would have thought it was providence as well considering how well things seemed to line up initially.
Even though the old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", this entire story is entertaining enough, and the vintage of the painting does make it semi authentic and I feel that combo makes for a great conversation piece

I'm even coming to the conclusion that nobody would know that they had the original from KR so you've just struck gold and then it all became clear. Ah well - it was good while it lasted đ

đ„ Big hugs buddy. Don't feel stupid. I've been down that road before on eBay. Remember one of the Ferrengi rules of acquisition - small print equals high risk. Always read the fine print and measurements. That really sucks, but it still is a fine painting. Maybe resell it with an accurate description and see if you get any bites. (Maybe you could sell it to Joe or AJ and tell them it shrank after 40 years đ€Ł) If not, I would still be proud to hang it on the wall. Feel better my friend. đ

Christian, Its tough when you are on a trip to relive your childhood and nostalgia you feel, to not get occasionally tripped up by things that feel / look original but are not. It's ok we have all been there, like buying an expensive game we thought was authentic but wasn't . Keep up the good work.
The truth of a collector, you take high risk sometimes is not big rewards
As time moves on I grow older and I feel much more of my life is left behind me then what I can look forward in the future. Those memories left in the back of my thoughts tell me who I am and what I have achieved. The things I love and were I have been and those who I love in my life. Those memories are strong because they have shaped me and they grab my future and bend it to finishing the incomplete memories in my life. If only for a few seconds I slip back in time by surrounding myself with those past objects. Surely this cant be bad as I don't jeopardise my present or future. I didnât watch Knight Rider, because I was always out doing stuff in the evenings with friends in those days, but I did watch The Ghost and Mrs. Muir when I was a very little girl, and I thought he was so distinguished and charming, but I used to get Edward and Rex Harrison mixed up đ. But then again, in my colour blind childâs eyes, I also thought Bing CROSBY and Bill COSBY were brothers because I pronounced both their surnames the same, lol.
You don't have the original car. Now you don't have the original painting. Celebrate it. You learned something about art, too! Most duplications like this were created for the same reasons many people buy lithographs of famous paintings today - not to fool or defraud anyone, but to get a piece of art they appreciate in their price range. Sometimes they're licensed replicas, sometimes they're of works years or centuries after they've been in the public domain.

Even if it is not the original from Devon's office, it is still a beautiful painting. I hope you have found a good place for it. One lesson to learn from it: don't buy items that you have just found on ebay and about to end in an hour except if they are listed for a very good price. My experience is that many of them gets re-listed in a couple of weeks anyway.
You couldnât afford (or probably obtain it even if you had big money) the original. You have an interesting story, and itâs still a beautiful painting.
Unfortunately, you did spend the money, but it wasnât all a waste.
It reminds me of the remote control bats for sale in back of magazines when I was a kid, which was literally too good to be true. At least you got something.
So .. worst case is you have a copy of a copy of a very unique picture that found its way on screen being that the painting was famous enough to warrant UniSt to get a copy itself on loan says something. And it's a rich story. Idk what you paid but it still seems something up your alley. And a rarity to be appreciated (as many said just get a better frame)
The National Gallery of Canada site calls the painting "The View at Narni".
"The Bridge at Narni" is an earlier version that's at the Louvre.
I'm in Ottawa myself so maybe I'll go check out the museum again sometime soon. The last time I was in there was in 2010.

Damn dude, I teared up a little at this. I really felt that disappointment. I guess the painting IS a recreation of the same painting and WAS near Universal studios back in the day. That makes it more of a Knight Rider collectable to me than a plastic toy produced in a far away land. Anyway, great video.

@@RetroRecipes Maybe a painter from the prop department made a copy of the copy for future productions or him/herself? Considering that matte paintings were still a thing back then, studios probably had several good artists on hand, that were not big names in the artworld.
That is A very nice painting and a Timley reminder of the show, even if it's not painted from the original artist, every cent of the money spent is worth it. I like to see it hung up on your studio wall next all the other cool stuff.
Well, it was worth a shot, considering the urgency of the situation and the apparent probability that this might have been obtained from Universal Studios. The "original-original" and other "official" versions might be in major art museums, but the painting you got could have been the copy used in _Knight Rider_ , which would have had real meaning for you personally. Turns out it wasn't that, either, but it is still a nice painting that represents something in the show, at the very least.

If the seller truly lived near Universal (LA), it could have come from the Universal warehouse. When the set director / prop manager liked the painting but decided it was too small for the shots of Devon's office, he could have had it photographically enlarged and then used the larger version for all the office shots. They then stored the smaller version in the back of the warehouse until they cleared all the old props in an auction (where your seller's parents bought it). Did the TV show depict the painting in enough resolution to see if we can match the branching pattern? I vote YES, it earns a place in the RR Museum or in the Perifractic Recording Studio! Thanks for taking us on this ride, very cool!
Iâd like to think so. But sadly some parts donât match Blu-Ray screenshots of the painting. Thank you for your optimism though!
@@RetroRecipes So Mark King, the painter (not singer) liked the 1826 Corot painting (still) in the Louvre then painted the same scene in the 1950s and now that's in Ottawa? So we have a copy of a copy that wasn't even the one Devon had? Oh that is tragic, but still vote to keep it, lovely painting and clearly a nice tribute to KITT/Devon.
