Botafogo is a neighborhood in the South Zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With almost 100 thousand inhabitants, the neighborhood is known for having one of the main Brazilian postcards: the Enseada de Botafogo, with the hills of Pão de Açúcar and Urca, and the Aterro do Flamengo in the background. Among the biggest attractions of Botafogo inlet is the well-known Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, whose pier and marina are visible from almost every point in the neighborhood.
It features cinemas, theaters, shopping malls, nightclubs, concert halls, museums, business centers, consulates, clinics, hospitals and some preserved mansions, from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is the neighborhood where the headquarters of one of the main football clubs in Brazil, Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas, is located, at Rua General Severiano, and where it housed its first field, the Old Botafogo Futebol Clube, at Rua Voluntários da Pátria. The consulates of the following countries are located in the neighborhood: South Africa, Argentina, Belgium, China, Egypt, Spain, Netherlands, Lebanon, Norway, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
And Botafogo has its samba school: São Clemente. It is known in Rio de Janeiro as the neighborhood of schools and clinics, due to the large number of these establishments in the region. Many people define it as a passing neighborhood, as it is located between the Center and the rest of the South Zone of the city. And it is not for nothing that one of the main roads is Rua da Passagem.
