Tip for reattaching the cage and tensioning the spring which controls the cage: remove the little limiting screw on the side of the cage, reassemble the knuckle with the un-tensioned spring inside, turn the cage to tension the spring, insert the limiting screw into the side of the cage. Much easier than trying to tension the spring and press it all back together again at the same time!

Thanks a lot - your pain and suffering certainly helped me! My RD-5501 needed a good cleaning with rust inside both "spring chambers". On the first where you had to use a clamp... I think there is a trick to it in addition to using a lever in the hole for the limiting screw. After a bit of swearing, it just popped into place. I was moving the main screw both to get it on and off - might have had something to do with it. Thanks again!

The limit screw head has been destroyed by my screwdriver.
Would any M4 bolt replace it? Specifically an M4 x 12? And im looking at a black zinc bolt for further aesthetic 😁

Looks like it’s a fairly standard TPI used (0.75), I just tried a random bolt that I probably got from a DIY shop and it works

@@atboy4342 i mean, for the screws that goes into the H and L limits. So far I havent seen any 11.5mm (which is whats on the spec sheet, they only go 12mm on hardwares. Would that be fine or should I go for the shorter 10mm?

    • @atboy4342

@@TheTriangle444 yes, I understood, Limit screws are apparently 0.75tpi and fairly standardised (M4 like you said). Well the difference between 11.5 and 12 is half a mm…Given that they never go all the way down, that shouldn’t be an issue. Only issue I can think of, is the size of the screw head. Surely any bike shop will sell you these for peanuts. I litrally find broken derailleurs in bins where these screws could be obtained

Myself, I would go in a big bike shop or sports shop and ask the bike section if they have any. Be shocked if they didn’t give them for free.
