  • 80 years have passed since that fateful Tuesday morning on June 6th 1944. The operation that began the liberation of France, Western Europe, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front against an evil that had never been seen before was known as D-Day.

The two times we die. The first time is the day we stop breathing and our heart stops, the second time is when people stop saying our name and remembering us. Let us never stop remembering these heroes.

One way of looking at it is that we’re lucky to live in a time when so few people have an understanding of this kind of warfare. We’ve lived enough generations away from this kind of thing that the kids have no concept of what it was like. Which is exactly what they would have wanted-for the kids to not have to think about things like this.

I went to a VFW in Lansdale, because I was in the memorial day parade. We were in uniform, and we got invited to come over for food and drinks after the parade. I was thw only one that showed up. While I was there, there was a WWII Vet there. Sometimes the room got called to silence and he would just start singing. They were songs I've never heard before. Then he sang Blood on The Risers. It was so weird for me because I felt small in comparison. I am a 19 yr old PFC and I'm standing there looking at one of the men I considered to be my heros, that I read about. I love this kind of content

I love these stories. It pains me to think of how many stories are lost to time because so many men refused to talk about it. Such an important part of our history, When I worked for the American Legion, I'd go to conventions and, even though I'm a Gulf War veteran, I never talked about what I went through. Mainly because it's insignificant by comparison. But I loved sitting with the older veterans and listening to their stories.

He said he does not know how he survived, and that it bothers him that his 2 best buddies didn't make it, but he did. That is the type of men that landed on the beaches of Normandie.

All American patriots should visit the Normandy beaches, I have had the chance to make the visit. It was truly daunting to stand at the shoreline of Omaha Beach, and imagine what it was like for a young man with 80 pounds of gear trying to disembark from an LST and fight his way up a hill. Terrifying. Nothing that most people of today could possibly imagine. And for what? Our FREEDOM.
I was also blessed to be able to visit the Pearl Harbor memorial. My Father was a US NAVY pilot. An instructor and later deployed to the south Pacific in NATS. My Dad spent time in Pearl, the Philippines, Saipan, and many island groups in between. My Visit to Pearl made it all come clear for the value of his sacrifice.
Salute the Veterans who gave it all. Support the Veterans who lived to tell a story. The comforts you have today have roots in their labor and sacrifice.

My grandfather never spoke about it a lot. Enlisted at 17 and ended up in the 82nd. He spent some time in Africa and then jumped behind Normandy. All he really said is that it was absolute chaos. He jumped again at market garden. He was captured that day and sent to Stalag 7a. He spoke more about life at the camp than anything that happened prior to that. Basically he spent all day working on a 1 mile section of rail. They repaired it during the day and then the British would wreck it at night. He spent the entire time repairing the same mile of rail.

Am I just gonna cry forever like these guys? I was in Iraq, 2005, south Bagdad, FOB Falcon (door kicker). I can’t get that shit out of my head. I’m involved with the VA, but I still can’t talk about the incidents with kids and people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Every Sunday I sit in church and just cry the whole sermon. I can’t get rid of it. I was so scared going up and down routes Irish and red wings every damn day just waiting my turn to get hit by an IED or VBID, after seeing so many gun trucks get hit all around me (but never me, how in the hell does that happen). Then after a while, you’re just to exhausted to be scared, to exhausted to be anything really. And then, you just don’t give a fuck anymore. Unfortunately, that’s when you start to get really good at your job. Thanks for the great documentary video. I will always be a fighter and never cave in!!!

There isn’t a day I don’t think of their courage and sacrifice and thank them for the freedoms I have enjoyed my entire life. My father served in the Pacific Theater; my maternal uncle was killed-in-action early in the War in North Africa during a Stuka dive-bombing attack. His third mission proved to be his last. The 66th division was brigaded with the French 12th division and fought on the Atlantic coast to take the German submarine pens. This was one week before my birth on New Years Eve 1944. He passed away in 2010. Was proud of his CIB for the battles around the subpens.

My uncle finally touched gold beach on his third try.
First time they noticed him and thought he was wounded until he refused to go back aboard
Second time a Sargent told him to stay close and they could show the others how it was done. The sargent was killed half way to the ramp and pulled him down to the floor as he died.
Refusing a third time to return to the ship and finally made the beach.
When he found cover and looked back all of the men from his third ride were also dead.

And we were having this same conversation about what would happen today and he looked at me and said that if a War like this would break out, he believes aside from our current Military serving ie Active, Guard, and Reserves. He thinks that before the country would depend on a lot of folks (Civilians) with today's entitled mentality that they would turn to us (Combat Veterans) to come back. And I 100% told him, and they'd be goddamn right to call on us because we would be ready, as our boots are currently right by the door. My Father was a WW2 VETERAN. Richard Mordechai Gist, Rest in Peace. He was a great father, Patriotand conservationist. He was born in 1924, went through the depression and was a Union Carpenter the rest of his life. He was definitely part of the GREATEST GENERATION ever. God Bless these VETERANsS and Thank you for your service to this great naton.

My grandpa was with the first wave of the 29th Infantry Division that landed on Omaha Beach June 6th, 1944. I have the D-Day to St. Lo certificate he received that states he served with The 29th Infantry Division from D-Day thru the capture of St Lo.
He was a quiet man that was well liked in the community. To look at him, was hard to imagine what he went thru. He very rarely talked about The War, and when he did, it was usually about some antics that he and his buddies would engage in but never about combat.
