Its once you've mastered an established genre that you can start to advance it I feel like. Copying others is a great way to learn. Then you take all the stuff you like and combine it to make it your own.

I agree. Lol the only reason I looked at this video is because the “title” literally, on principle, cannot be taught. I wanted to see what was said. But this is true. It’s how I got started. Once you learn the basics and pick up little tricks you can start to experiment. You don’t start playing jazz piano without first learning chopsticks or Mary had a little lamb

“Making what comes easily and is fun” is truly the answer to finding your sound. I have recently discovered I’ve found my sound and that is exactly how it started to happen. I was straining myself producing then I’d give up and make something fun and quick, then I thought “I won’t be as good at those other sounds... But nobody will be as good at making mine”

  • @imoffendedthatyouareoffended

When I started getting into production my buddy who went to school for everything and has been doing this for over 13 years gave me the best advice I could have gotten, he told me “don’t second guess yourself, if you find something you like to go with it” second guessing causes you to over think everything you are doing. When I went into making music, and even a year later, I only make music for myself. I publish it online for others to enjoy but I don’t care if it becomes popular or not, to me making music allows me to express myself when my words and vocabulary just don’t seem to work.

    Producing now, sorting later.
I think this was a thought that has greatly helped me lately as well, producing whatever it is I wanna hear, and then when I've collected all these tracks, I can master all of it to make it sound like its all coming from one place, but that can't happen till I make all the music in my head that I want to hear in the world. So your words definitely gave my thoughts a good place to reside on.
This is probably the clearest video I've watched on this topic, because its a really simple deal, yet very hard to grasp. Thanks!

Think people get a little lost (myself included) trying to make songs in the style/sounds like whats popular at the moment and there is nothing wrong with that. But the most fun I've had is just really messing about with synths and drums and create something that maybe isn't the usual thing I would always listen to but something that happens to come naturally.

    • @Ray-lx8le
      @Ray-lx8le Pƙed 2 lety +1

I feel you, just got to get the musical sillies out sometimes- every session shouldn’t have a song come out of it but a step closer to the best song of your life. Just write what feels natural instead of trying to fit into a bubble of what’s hot. Styles come and go and music is so so vast that you have the power to make something amazing that nobody even knows exists yet.

Coldplay, The Weeknd and Frank Ocean have always been my main inspirations for singing, producing, arranging and all that. It wasn’t until years later where I really started to figure out what “I” sound like instead of trying to sound like my inspirations. A big thing to remember is that you and your favorite artists most likely have not had the same experiences down to every detail. You gotta live YOUR life. Your own experiences will affect your sound!

Great video! One tip from my side would be that, if you are producing like your favourite artist, like using their presets and drum samples and thinking it's what makes you happy and I only care about the end product, then somewhere between you will realise that you can't really find your identity in the song. So make that sure in your mind while overusing a particular artist's presets and samples. Hope it helps 💯

If I get a little groove in my step I know I've done something decent. I'm probably listening to my own music more than other artists right now and I love it. Finding your own sound is more finding what you love in music and applying it. Its all about style. Example if you making trap and you use the generic drums that would be cool i guess but what about placements how you use your drums even you can change the sound. Etc so many ways you can create a lane. Look at southside he was known for his "epilepsy hi hats" back then that right there brought something to the game that wasnt there. One thing I've been able to do since puberty is go from deep chest voice lower than the chocolate rain guy or Johnny cash into really high head voice like Maynard without going into falsetto. I can't get into whistle voice but the range from low to high is pretty wide. As a kid I nearly drowned a few times and for some reason though that expanding my throat to the side would help if I was under water. That doesn't make any sense as an adult but I used to do these throat stretches and maybe that's what led to the deep voice? I don't know. That seems like a unique thing I guess.

i just gotta get better i love the navy blue, mike sound, and been trying to get that friday injury reserve sound, which is basically a jazz blues sample slowed down the whole beat with 808's added, and other cuts. Then the song adds high hats gets more uptempo like a trap beat. Then i also like deathcamp by tyler and new magic wand a ton. Influenced by Monte's backstage pass and all that. its a mess right now lol.

One thing i never do is listen to the same genres I produce. If i wanna make a melodic dubstep track, yes, I’ll search for inspiration, but i won’t listen to melodic dubstop tracks day in and day out until a track is done. This allows you to put your own spin on things. Know what the genre is, but never allow yourself to know what everyone else is done. This is what helped me create my melodic tearout track “The Willow Tree” that will be coming out on my new album here in a month or so. I personally am a metal head. Yes, i produce dubstep and heavy bass tracks, but i never listen to much of that anymore. I hear what my friends on discord have made and i watch production streams of my favorite youtubers. I attend the feedback sessions and i do them on my own. But i never reach too mich father out. I base my music on what my brain hears. If i hear vocals, I’ll sing them or find one thay fits the mold. If i hear a screeching synth, I’ll make one. It isn’t hard to find that sweet spot between “this sounds cool” and “this is fucking dope.” All it takes is practice. Also, don’t be discouraged by putting a project to the side. I guarantee that i have more unfinished projects now than i ever have before. Sometimes, it’s just sound design. Sometimes, I’m not in the right head space. It’s okay! Throw it to the side and try something else. And don’t be afraid to ditch any attempts you may have made on a track. Delete them even. Sometimes starting an idea over again with a fresh clean slate can help reinvigorate your brain and help you see other avenues that you didn’t see before.

I like to make a playlist that has my favourite songs, and see what they are doing that I like, and what I don’t like. I make a big list of dos and don’ts and putting it together I can create my own ideal style.
Here’s an example that I did: I like the song Boomerang by Brooks and GRX. I really like the drop lead so I wrote that down under do’s. I like the slidey bass notes, so I wrote “slidey bass notes” under do’s. I don’t like the bass sound that was used (I prefer gritty hi-cut bass), so I wrote that down too. And bam, I now have something more to contribute to my style. If I need inspiration for drop leads, I can go and listen to songs with drop leads that I like, and drop leads that I don’t so I know what not to do as well. Then I make something similar, making sure it fits the song. Making stuff that you like is crucial for making your own style.

Style really is the most important aspect in music production. You can't gain a foothold and hope to separate yourself without it. If your style is super unique and interesting, it can absolutely overshadow your shortcomings in other areas of your music. If you're fortunate enough to start figuring out what factors into your style, it should arguably be your highest priority to flesh it out.

I’d say there are only a handful of artists who do their own thing and are successful at it. I’d venture to guess that 80-95% of artists don’t have a clear and unique identity and a cohesive soundscape. And that’s totally fine, just make music and put it out there and you’ll pivot as you go.

As hard as it is to hear for a lot of us artists who want to spread our stuff to the masses, I think the key is to love the music for the music.
Don't try and chase that placement for the sake of getting rich quick, you need to live and breathe your sound and perfecting what YOU want to create. Exploring the uncharted territories of not only your own mind, but your genre as well.
You need to be ok with never making it. You need to be ok with seeing your stuff live in a space where it may never be monetized, yet it's fulfilling.
Of course that's tough if you want to make a living in music, but you save that specific energy for working with other artists. Your own work needs to be for you first.
Great video and very insightful, I recommend checking out some of the interviews with Jack Antonoff as well, he goes into this on his Pensados Place interview.

Don’t forget that any decent musician also plays in many bands, has multiinstrumental qualities and may have plenty of sideprojects and experimentations. As sol said, have fun and do as much as you can!

@@SolStateMusic the best comes once you find both on the same personality. Not the most common but hey it takes 20k hours of hard focused work to master both worlds and on top of that have certain qualities that you probably acquired when you were a toddler to be open minded and capable of jumping on stage (think of Mac Rabillet for example). For most of us it’s ok to be decent at just one of these dexterities.

Im having a really hard time sticking to one sound. I started with 80s synthwave and now im making 90s post hardcore/grunge. Also did some lofi slowcore stuff. Its too easy to make multiple genres these days and its hard to stick to just one without getting sick of it or running out of ideas.

What works for me is make something that blows your mind , that is good music and your style . like a great melody or a fresh sounding chord progession , do not use the same sine waves, square waves . Try experimenting even with lets say guitar samples or instruemtns that you like

It’s hard because I make different types of rap. Trap, experimental, melodic etc. everyone says “stick to one sound and be consistent” buts it’s so hard to not want to experiment. XXXTENTACION made all sorts of genres and it worked. Young thug makes all sorts of genres and it also works.

First you model, then you become the model.
Think about Classical Music, quite the same instruments,
but the Message always a New One.
Don't confuse Sounds with Style, nor Sonics with Signature,
we can use the same sounds to give New Messages.
First you borrow, then you become the fountain.
Most classical musicians were "forced" to compose songs for certain purposes.
They borrowed, they modeled, but when it comes to symphonies for example,
    They did what they Wanted,
what they Like, some made in a span of 20 years.
    Thus..
    Do Your Fucking Journey !!
