I love how Grog attempted to skip an hour of dialogue by telling Percy he'd give him his glasses back if they make a decision right there and then, and Percy is like, "Nope."

@@balkhazzargaming5373 Yeah, this is an unfortunate flaw I'm noticing on my first watch through of Critical role. I hear they get a lot better. But when it gets into a deep dialogue or heavy planning, and I notice the first signs of them spinning their wheels or trying to milk an NPC for something. I have to sigh a bit as i know it's definitely going to drag on longer than it needs to.
I mean, i like the show enough to sit through over 90 episodes. But let's not pretend that everything they do is some sort of genius or good play. A lot of the audience is right there with Travis when the rest of the group starts to ramble, overact, or filibuster each other over a plan.

To be fair, if Matt will insist on describing an imp as an "imp-like creature", it's fair to wonder
"Has anyone stopped to wonder why we're all still alive?" Pike. Pike is why you're alive.
The gnomes are both the most important and most unappreciated members by far. They constantly pull their friends out of trouble, one is the most charismatic creature alive, and the other the strongest living connection to Saren Rea. The couples are seemingly always on a double date pushing the group into fight after fight and if Grog wasnt addicted to violence he'd probably be with either Pike or Scanlan.
@@raymonholt69 to be fair grog is not so bad to get into fights with it seams most the time the twins or percy and keleth are aktually starting the fight of with something stupit that u normaly expect grog be doing so ther is that also if u fight u want grog on ur site not the opponends site i htink the 3 of them are best combi to hold the group alive scanlan tho talk enemys down grog the tank and bodyguard and pike the healing reviver she is these 3 in combination get the group mostly out of the fight alive is what i think

Travis started brainstorming about a drowned man and was asking about half orcs at one point, marisha just lights up at the mention of the cobalt soul, Laura starts wanting to cast more spells and loves being pike... It's great

One of the great things about this format is that every time Matt describes or says or does something creatively amazing (which happens about every ten minutes) I can count on the fact that if I glance at Travis he is obviously loving it as much as I am. It isn't often that you get to watch a performer and his audience at the same time.
When Matt is acting out his NPCs, I always look to Liam. He has this expression of awe on his face.
loved the moment where (i think) percy asked what the flower of westruun was, and Matt thinks about it for like 5 seconds before giving a definitive answer.
the reaction was great, cause the rest openly expressed awe for that level of improv.

The only reason VM could defeat Vecna when they did is that he was a newly ascended god and still rising in power. If it was Vecna at full power than I dont think they would've had a chance against him

@@Nakikitsune there are no ways a lvl 20 party kills Asmodeus, the other demon lords? Sure, but not him.. hes not just an archdevil hes one of the first beings to exist in dnd cosmology, hes the kind of guy who points at you and you drop. The best they could do is defeat one of his avatars.

Like they have inside jokes off camera that are referenced sometimes, they talk about parties and gatherings that happened off camera. I’m sure they fight like all humans do, but their friendship doesn’t seem fake at all
@@kayladt25 Vox Machina started as a home game. This cast had been playing together for a year or so before the show even began, and they presumably knew each other well before that, so their relationship is 100% real.

It actually isn't as they have a limited amount of time to get there and kill Hotis before he is restored and comes after them again and next time his attack would be even harder to detect and bigger.

@@archie4president330 - do they know that, though? From the information they'd gotten via Matt, a couple months could have been long enough for Hotis to have already reformed.
Taking a couple extra *days* to go talk to Zahra (a Tiefling Warlock who would certainly know Infernal, and who can read all languages) would have been smart.
And to go collect Pike, who directly told them to tell her before going to Hell. Pike can cast Tongues, solving the entire language problem for 1 hour (3rd lvl, non-concentration, can be cast on another person). www.dnd-spells.com/spell/tongues Many cleric spells are directly designed to counter the threat of fiends, which is exactly why Matt (as Pike) told them not to go to Hell without her.
They didn't even prepare at all for how physically hot it would be in Hell, or any other challenges to survival. They didn't find anything about the physical conditions there, but you can assume it's hot. Liam still hasn't mentioned setting Vax's Deathwalker's Ward to fire resist (from lightning before the Kraken battle).
@@Peter_Cordes that's a fair point. I do think that they still had a long time (pretty sure he's still got a whole to go when they find him) but no doubt bringing pike or Zara would be a good idea. From a metagaming standpoint they can't tho- that's probably why.
@@archie4president330 - Metagaming is the opposite of this - the characters know of Pike and would want to bring her.
But yes there are real-life out-of-character constraints, and Matt can't play unlimited numbers of extra party members when their players aren't there.
I was suggesting that if they wanted to talk to anyone about language and other things about the Hells, Zahra would be the one to *talk* to. Not bring her.
And they should have at least talked to Pike, whether or not they brought her. But if they did, Matt already said Laura + Liam could play her character when Ashley can't skype in. If they chose not to bring her, Pike could have done a Feast and saved Keyleth's spell slot. And cast Tongues before they left.

terrorblades This is kinda what happened to my group on Saturday night. Got in over our heads, we have NO cleric (Died a loooong time ago, player Rage Quit the class and rolled a wiz who promptly died anyways.) and the only thing that kept him alive, as well as our Bard was my Barbarian being like "OH SHIT!" and force-feeding them potions Grog style.
My group gave me shit every game "WHY DOES THE TANK HAVE SO MANY POTIONS?!" Now you fuckers see why, and they don't question it at all anymore. I REALLY do miss our Cleric though *sigh*

The reason they went without her is the same reason they fought the Briarwoods without her: They can't really afford to wait until Ashley can come back to do big plot stuff that takes more than one episode. The kraken fight, for example, wasn't really a big thing. It was only one battle and that was that. This is more involved stuff, and Ashley is a busy lady.
In previous editions of D&D, some planes of Hell restricted levels of Divine spellcasting. The Abyss would restrict spells the deeper you went, until the 100th layer, where there are only 1st level spells available.
This would be the perfect quest to bring Zahra along.
She is actively trying to avoid the parentage that made her a tiefling if I remember correctly, so I'm not sure if she would want to go

@TheDifferentBeast Yeah, but this episode ended on a cliffhanger about a couple bad guys really wanting to get their hands on a white tiefling. Lilith actually is one and would attract even more attention. At least Vax's alter self went away after an hour and there would be no white tiefling to be found, even if they searched their rooms.

They are rare since 4th Edition. Before that you had all kinds and colors. For Albino Tiefling, just take Annah from Planescape Torment as a example.

I love how into character Travis gets as grog. It is absolutely amazing with all of the minor things that he does, like cross his eyes in confusion or make total absolute brain farts, or random noises in the middle of sentences he is absolutely one of my favorite things in critical role which is only marveled by mats amazing story creating and adaptability skills like how he can make a new character down to there grand parents names in a couple seconds.
I mean... that's story-tellers in general. The Irish don't have a monopoly on narrative traditions.

@@shinybugg9156 Demons don't generally do bargains is probably what he meant. Though Percy has already been on the bad end of a deal and should absolutely know better.
@@shinybugg9156 nah, you can bargain with a devil, if you're smart about it. Famous D&D characters like Mordenkainen and Elminster have done so on several occasions without much in the way of reprecussions. But it requires a lot of care, a lot of carefull reading and a lot of fine print reading.
Demons on the other hand are completely unreasonable rampaging monsters. The only way to get something from a demon is to bind it, to break it down and dominate it. You cannot bargain with a demon, because it doesn't care for what you can offer.

As a DM all I want is for one day my players to have the same reaction as Grog to my descriptions.
The feeling of the party gasping in fear, cheering loudly or laughing hysterically at descriptions, voices, or actions is certainly the most rewarding thing you can experience as a DM. Even something as simple as impersonating a barmaid (I'm a male) and reacting perfectly when the rogue rolls really high on a slight of hand check to slap her ass and make it look like it was somebody else can be all it takes to crack the party.
My proudest moment as a DM was when the party was just chilling out in one of the members' hometown and I surprised them with an attack on the village (long story, but it came from a mistake they made) and they had these genuinely horrified reactions at how I described the state of the village (there were about 100 people in the village and they only managed to save 11). It's just _so_ rewarding to get those honest reactions from players at the story you're telling.
@@EvieCorwell I think my proudest moment was when I made a whole city in my world, described it to my players and one of them just said: "This is amazing, I am going to take this city you built and put it in the game I DM for my other friend group." That was honestly one of the nicest things to hear. Also because I was very proud of the city I worked hours on to build.

After reading up on Asmodeus in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, it makes Grog's proposition to kidnap him and hold him for ransom even more hilarious, and KINDA makes me wish they would try.
It would also be a great addition to the series of "It's always sunny in Exandria" titles: "Vox Machina kidnap the president"
Yeah as someone familiar with Asmodeus, since they first introduced him to D&D, my first thought was that they would try to kidnap him, he'd end up convincing them to take him on a shopping mission, and then bargain Grog to sell all their souls to him to be allowed to start a war with Celestia to get out of it LOL

Yeah, unfortunately Taliesen isn't as smart or sharp as the character he's improvising, so discrepancies like this are inevitable. As is the nature of improvisational roleplay, no one plays their character perfectly all the time.

I think he plays that character pretty well. You can’t be the sweet talker you think you are if all you’ve done is sit in a library reading every books 😂 that’s why scanlan was just so good

@@Blasted2Oblivion alter self is NOT an illusion magic. You literaly get horns, hooves and tail or whatever medium trasformations you would like to have which also can grant you special mechanics. So the real problem here is lack of language

Episodes are always slightly less entertaining for me when Sam is absent. Matt did well substituting for Tary but as I watched all I could imagine the whole time was how Sam as Tary would've reacted to everything in Hell and it would've been hysterical.

I recently started a campaign for my little sisters, they're 13, cause i remember they were really sad when I stopped playing pretend with them. I only thought of it because this show and its really helped them creatively and to cope with some stuff going on in our lives. I guess what I'm saying is thank you. Not for me. Because death talks about the end of a character that can be replaced in the narrative, like Sam did with Scanlan and Taryon. The retirement talks about the entire campaign coming to an end.

I kind of figured that was the kraken. At one point, he saved Vax whilst inside the beast and unconscious by actually giving him a roll for a death save instead of automatically failing him from damage from the acid of the kraken.

They pronounce lemure kind of weird. They make it sound like "lemur", but I've always thought the "e" at the end means it should rhyme with "sure".

It's an interesting idea. I guess the best would be to start as an imp or something similar though. Technically lemures are the building blocks of devils and can't really do much.
Yeah my comment is more just about the path of devils and arch devils, rather than specifically Lemures. I just misunderstood the role of the Lemure, I thought it was a tortured being/soul that was eventually corrupted and then granted minor powers in servitude, that then as it did more for the senior devils and owners was granted more power

Depends on if Matts Setting is based on older settings than 4th Edition. Before that, Tieflings had all kinds of different looks and colors. And for a White Tiefling : Annah - of - Shadows, one of the PCs from Planescape Torment looks like that. By the way, since the group played Pathfinder before, in there you have a shitload of different Tiefling Designs.
@@RabenmundK he has a trackrecord of not using the books origin for monsters and creatures, so different colors of tiefling can be more common. And since Lilith specifically said that she was hunted for the color of her skin since she was rare, and he didn't correct her, that is how it is in his setting.

Gian de Guia Laura played Jester in a one shot shortly after the slayers take. I think Laura had a liking for Zarah as a character and made Jester a less serious version of her for the one shot and she must have liked playing her as Laura played Jester in several one shots before making her a part of the mighty nine.

I’m pretty sure Allura is a 15th level wizard, giving her spells up to 8th level. That’s pretty powerful.

I'm always amazed at how Matt is good at emulating an absent player's character. It makes sense since he's already playing a huge amount of NPCs with wildly distinct attitude and mannerisms but still, the way he was playing Taryon felt really close to something Sam would actually do.
