    your understanding and ability to communicate is amazing. I learned a lot from this and I know exactly what you mean about maintaining the original sound; when I hang on to the original sound as go higher without fear, it's always surprised how much easier it can be.

    Carl, I've been following you for years at this point, I think I first started watching your videos from the Brett Manning singing success forums and I just wanna say you've been a big help in my unraveling of the mysteries behind the voice and singing. I love the way you explain using different amounts of compression to convey a different emotion, similar to how a painter will use a different color. Lately I've been a bit confused if I was 'wrong' to sing in a lighter tone with very little compression the same way that Michael Jackson would in some of his songs. This helped clear that up. Singing is about conveying emotion and painting a picture for the listener, different amounts of compression are necessary to keep the sound from becoming sterile and boring.

    None of our chorus coaches talk about compression or anything about cord closure. This is all new information....but I don't really understand how to do it. As soon I get over being sick and can talk again I will hope for a lesson with you!

    Really excellent explanation and demonstration! I've been working to perfect this balance for years and it is has only been quite recently that I've been actually able to keep the balance. The problem I have seen is that when I am tired from working all day where I talk quite a bit, my voice feels out of balance and it is more difficult to sing in the evening. I'm trying to teach my body to pace myself when I have to talk a lot and speak with a more balanced tone so that at night, when I want to sing, I can actually do it consistently.

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 8 lety

      It's tough I find as I improve I'm able to stay relatively balanced even when my voice is tired, though it is more challenging to remain calm and composed when the voice is tired especially in front of an audience.. :)

    Excellent video. You explain what happens if you have balance, as well as what happens if you have more closure and less air pressure. What happens when you have decent closure, but more air pressure? Is this what causes the “pull” and breaking at the top?

    Trying to sing the acoustic version of layla by eric clapton, and to get that dark sort of voice i feel like i have to use alot of compression, buy i really struggle to make the sound open and not sound really strained ^^

    I was wandering I saw your video and now adays I'm praticing godsmack under your scars, love his voice, no forcing but still sounds rock, and so for myself I got some situation on which I am not able to do some compressions when singing softly, the exemple I could place is when he is saying the word sense .(In which I think is compression but not sure) He does it, In the beginning when he says (do we make sense) I dont know other terms than compression, but mainly I'd like to do the same, with a clear voice like he is doing, mine is sometimes""windy", and keeping it soft, just like almost like he was talking which I need to practice. And so I was wandering if you could give me some tips to get this, techniques and exercises and also what video of yours you recommend me for this. For me it seems to be using his fry vocals for this moment, but when I'm doing it doesnt sound what his doing and so for myself when doing it seems and feels that I should be compressing deeper in the throat, (on which i'm not able with soft voice).

  • @gnomik33
    @gnomik33 Před 6 lety

    dayum, *KEY INFORMATION STARTS FROM* 2:50. But Carl, what about this situation, what should i choose?
    Situation: i am doing "mum, Bub, Ney" excercises and I come close to my "scary pitches" like A4 so i have 2 choices:
    1. keep the same air flow and compression and eventually start loosing closure (similar to vocal fry sound) or even lose closure at all (just air goes between cords but they dont produce any sound)
    2. Increase air flow and compression to get more couple of tones (maximum of b4) and start tensing and eventually splash.
    What would you suggest and is it normal that i have this feeling of "weak grip" and "fry mix" :D :D :D

    I have no problem going up higher at low volume, but I sing at high volume, so I can't find that perfect balance up there... I end up squeezing my throat when I use vowels like e or u... frustrating !

    Awesome vid! Just a quick question though; Is 'lean' when compression and air flow are working consistently together? How can it be explained through power vocals or belting?

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 7 lety

      the more you squeeze the more you have to support with air pressure, air and cord work in sync and harmony then you sing like a god ;) .

  • @AxonRiseMusic
    @AxonRiseMusic Před 5 lety

    This’ll be an odd question but do you have any tips for maintaining compression while singing phrases? I can hold onto it pretty well during scales and warm ups but when I do actual phrases, all my technique and compression goes out the window and I sound like garbage

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 5 lety

      As you articulate words is hard to maintain consistent closure, short scales with vowel changes oo oh ah / ee eh aa help learn it but it is one of the hardest parts of singing, my biggest challenge right now to 👍🏻

    Very Helpful Carl Thank-you! I've just recently (a few days ago) discovered how to add rasp/grit to my singing that doesn't leave me with a sore throat. However what I am often experiencing is what you've described at the 11 minute mark (strain and push)in the area you've described immediately under the jaw/chin. Not sore per-say but gravelly and noticeable for a few hours after. Is this normal/to be expected when singing with grit or am I still doing it incorrectly?

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 6 lety

      I'm not sure I don't really use grit most of my coaching is focused on a clean easy tone that will last a life time. There is a girl with great channel all about rasp you should check her out. czcams.com/video/UHWBAO6xqzI/video.html

  • @callmedeno
    @callmedeno Před 7 lety

    Im finding it difficult to feel like my support is connecting to actual air flow. I've watched a lot of videos and understand the concept of support, but when I try to concentrate on engaging muscles below to try and regulate the air coming out it just doesn't feel like I'm actually controlling anything. It feels like im just engage muscles and the air is still doing its own thing. It's hard to describe. It's as if im trying to make air come out just using muscles below rib cage but it feels like a superficial thing rather than those muscles doing it

    • @cwehden
      @cwehden  Před 7 lety +1

      If there is movement then muscles are working, support is a description of the relationship between the vocal cords and the air pressure being supplied to them, combine the right amount of closure with the right amount of airflow and BOOM! you have something nice to listen to :)

    • @callmedeno
      @callmedeno Před 7 lety +1

      thanks for the straightforward explanation. in terms of airflow, lower notes need less pressure /force to be supported? I find it with lower notes I have the inclination to actually tense more otherwise they sound breathy, but maybe what I actually need is more laryngal compression....
