Storyline
The Game is a 1997 American mystery thriller film directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger and James Rebhorn and produced by Propaganda Films and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. It tells the story of a wealthy investment banker who is given a mysterious birthday gift by his brother-participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his everyday life. As the lines between the banker's real life and the game become more uncertain, hints of a larger conspiracy begin to unfold.
The Game was well-received by critics like Roger Ebert and major periodicals like The New York Times, but had middling box-office returns compared to the success of Fincher's previous film Se7en (1995). The film later gained a strong cult following among Fincher's fans with some noting it as one of his most underrated films

Such an underated movie that the algorithm really isn't picking up! If you enjoyed this, don't forget to like, subscribe and share to try and get the attention of our algorithm overlords 😂✌️
No one plays a burned out man on the edge like Michael Douglas
This is one of those movies where you wish you could go back and watch it again for the first time. That being said, I find it to be highly rewatchable. Such a good film.
David Fincher's "The Game" remains an underappreciated and highly misunderstood masterpiece. A lot of people who watch this movie get hung up on how improbable its events are, but while they're pointlessly counting "cinema sins", they're completely missing the brilliance of the film. The entire point of "the game" is to strip Nicholas of the wealth and position that were socially isolating him. He needed to be left, a broken husk of a man in a foreign country, to force him to give up his father's watch and the emotional burden it represents. The game isn't just a plot device. It's about having humanity and excitement re-injected into a miserable prick's life. It's an intervention. A total rebirth. It's like a modern version of A Christmas Carol, but with the holiday setting discarded. Nicholas Van Orton stands in as our 1990's Ebeneezer Scrooge and Michael Douglas absolutely nails the role.
I definitely got the scrooge vibe. May have mentioned that in the reaction 🤔
I think you just have to go with this movie and I didn't mind doing so. I think that fact that it's made so well really helps.
@@RyanCarrington Yeah, I think you said something to that effect. When I want to support a video and boost you in the algorithm, I typically just copy and paste my mini review of the movie. So we had similar thoughts. Great minds think alike, as they say! I'm a huge fan of Fincher's early work. Seven, The Game and Fight Club are all amazing films. Maybe the best start to a directing career ever? But after those three, he falls off in a big way, for me. None of his post 2000 films that I've seen measure up to those original three gems.
@Hereticked Gone Girl is definitely up there with them for me. Not quite as high as Fight Club and Seven, but it's in the mix for sure.
it's definetly a movie where if stop to think about it for 5 minutes nothing makes sense and too many conincidences and such to work...but you don't care because the multiple twists at the end was so brilliantly done.
Yes, that's pretty obvious mate.
LOL - 31:04 - My old roommate and I used to always exclaim "Its the GAME!" whenever anything went wrong, lost keys, spilled drinks, just the most mundane stuff, everything was The GAME!
Haha I'm doing the same from now on 😂
Some fun facts about this film:
1. Originally, Conrad was written as a woman and David Fincher wanted Jodie Foster to play the role. Unfortunately, due to a lawsuit with Polygram Films that she had, she wasn't able to play the role and the character was reworked. It was offered to Jeff Bridges after the reworking, but after he declined, Sean Penn was casted for the role. However, Fincher ended up working with Foster on another film: Panic Room (2000).
2. You mentioned having seeing Fight Club. This one happens to be a crossover between the two. For the scene outside the bar where Tyler asks the Narrator to "hit me as hard as you can", the station wagon the narrator falls back into when Tyler hits him is a station wagon the Narrator falls against. The station wagon used by Jim in the last act of this film and turned up in Fight Club, and quite by accident. Fincher needed a car for the scene and the transportation company rented out the station wagon to them. When Fincher got on set, he noticed the station wagon and started to have a feeling of deja vu. And it wasn't until he noticed that the CRS sticker on the window of the car that he realized it had been the same one from The Game.
3. Among the tests that Nicholas is asked to take when he interviews at CRS is the MMPI. This is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory which is one of the most commonly used personality tests in mental health. The test is used by trained professionals to assist in identifying personality structure and psychopathology.
4. When at CRS the interviewer turns on a computer which makes the same noise as the Weyland computers from the Alien franchise. Director David Fincher was the director of Alien 3 (which he directed before he did Se7en).
5. Deborah Kara Unger fractured a bone in her foot and jumped into a dumpster infested with real rats while working on this film.
Fun fact: the guy playing Nicholas's dad in the 16mm prologue is Charles Martinet, aka the voice of Mario for many years, including Mario 64.
Oooh, that is a fun fact!
That's incredible! Now whenever I see him fall off the roof, I'm gonna imagine him going "WHAAAAaaAAAAaAAAaohhhh" in the Mario voice.
@@dlweiss mamma mia!
Im canadian i have no idea who mario 64 is but i could tell u who mario 66 is
A brilliant psychological thriller from David Fincher!
The scene where Michael Douglas finds the doll in his driveway was on Bravos 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
This movie is super underrated
I dont think its underrated at all.. everyone loves it

So was the shawshank redemption looked how that turned out one of the best movies ever made
Quite possibly my favorite Fincher flick, nice. Thanks for the dope content man!
Thanks for watching 🤙
This film is just *sick*! It gives you little pieces of information, shifts the meaning, gives you plausible alternative explanations, and keeps you guessing on what's really going on the whole time.
I still have to wonder how differently it would've gone, had he helped out that guy in the bathroom.
going to throw out a random recommendation - NEAR DARK which is a 1987 film directed by KATHRYN BIGELOW and stars both LANCE HENRIKSEN and BILL PAXTON
evidently they were travelling together in a convertible off camera both in character (method acting) when they were pulled over for speeding and the cop reacted to LANCE by 1st reaching for his gun and then letting them go without a ticket
Crocodile Dundee 1&2 please
Game: Showing him what real people live like and bringing him down from his Ivory Tower. Great movie! Thanks, Ryan!
Woah... This kept me gripped from start to finish!
Let's hear your next movie suggestions 🤙
(Btw, Falling Down was blocked. I'll try and get it back up soon, for anyone who missed it.)
The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Pretty wild concept for a film.
To feed your Fincher, Se7en and Zodiac are essentials.
Miracle Mile (1988). Don't look it up, go in blind and preferably high.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
My girlfriends a cyborg (also known as cyborg she) is a good film. There is no English dub version as far as I know. Might be best for personal viewing
An absolutely top class film. Not suitable for people who only think in Tik-Tok format and can concentrate for a maximum of two minutes. For everyone else, the film breaks all conventions and leaves concrete paths behind.
I absolutely agree. It's not for people who have the attention span of a goldfish.
I watched this with my dad the first time. It has stuck with me ever since . I have seen it over 25 times, including a scant few reaction versions- this is by far the greatest reaction I’ve seen. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times. Great job my man. New sub.
By 2025 Carrington will be a Michael Douglas aficionado (provided we're not all destroyed by the red heifer prophecy before then). Everything he was in between 1984 - 2000 is worth watching
This movie is literally like the Game. I wish I could go back and re-watch it for the first time again.. but I can't so I settle for watching other people's first time reaction.
I saw this when it came out. Years later I couldn't remember if it was as epic as I remembered. Yes. Yes it was. Thank you for reacting.❤ You're a maniac.
A pickpocket can just as easily slip something in you pocket as they can remove something… more easily, in fact.

I love how even if you can figure some of the movie out you won't due to the 2-3 twists at the end the just mess with your head.
You know, Michael Douglas can pull off action and comedy, too. One of his most famous movies was Romancing the Stone. It's an Indiana Jones style adventure and he really pulls it off. It's a lot of fun, too. Great movie.
Thanks for showing my comment at the beginning of the reaction.
Fantastic reaction Ryan. I had the good or bad fortune to see this movie with my brother. When we walked out of the theater, I looked over and he just gave me a big evil grin and I said don't you dare ever pull this crap on me!

I`m so glad you liked it :) !
5:55 sequence and overly-casual, wormy guy remind me of the Rekall sales pitch.
This movie expanded my definition of what a movie can be, much like The Usual Suspects. Great reaction, C!
Try the afi 100
Yeah, this movie was trippy 😵💫
You said what I was thinking, about the guys in the beginning - "I wish I could go back and do it all over, for the first time." I feel like that about this movie. BUT, watching you watch this was as close as I'll get, and that was pretty damned cool as well! Thanks for this reaction! SOOOO fun! Also, line of the day - (paraphrased) "I thought we were watching D&D, but we're actually watching Call of Duty." AWESOME!!! LOL . . . haha . . . Doody . . .
Haha glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching 🙌
I ENVY YOU SOOOO much! I wish I could watch it a first time again! Once you've seen it.... Well I get happy watching other people watch it for the first time now.
Haha yeah, this is one of those movies you can only watch once for the full effect. Unless you get a big bang on the head 😅
The irony is the tone of the film with the two men in the member's club envious they couldn't go through it again and don't spoil it for him. First time I watched this I was hooked. Guessed most of it right the first time I watched it apart from one bit, great film, and you can't forget and rewatch. 🙂
I think this is hands down Fincher's best movie. It's not technically superior to stuff like Seven or Gone Girl, but it's his most re watchable. I just rewatched it again this past weekend for the hundredth time and it never gets old.
Im like that with Fight Club.
Also, Gone Girl has been something I've rewatched a lot. I keep thinking it's one of my favourite newer movies and then remind myself that it's now actually 10 years old 💀
Best way to describe this movie is it’s a mind fuck.
Wish I could watch this movie for the first time again
Same 😂
It turned out to be one of those movies I was talking about!
I am SO GLAD you liked this as much as I did.
Thanks for suggesting it!
Keep going down the Michael Douglas rabbit hole if you can. You might have seen it already, but 'Basic Instinct' is quite insane.
Definitely need to get to that.
I meant to watch it a while back but completely forgot.
Ha!!!! Knew you would love this movie. And you know what, per your "wish" I just did see it for the first time...... AGAIN🤔 Thanks Mate, as always, for sharing. Keep up the great work and reactions.
Thanks for watching 👊
Perfect reaction to one of my favourite movies. Kept you guessing, and gripped, and you loved it! Was good also to see my name and comment at the start there; any more of this sort of behaviour Mr Carrington and you'll end up earning yourself another Patreon member! 😃
How do you define a good reaction?
glad u finally watched this!
In High School I had a Dean named Mrs. Butts. She hated me with all her heart. I was a juvenile delinquent of sorts. Skipping school for weeks at a time. I wished evil upon her, and then later I heard she had a bad stroke and needed to walk using a cane, this was shortly after I left school. I always wondered if that curse of mine had worked on her, and then I kind of felt guilty about wishing evil upon her.
Thanks for that piece of info
Wow such a great movie I did not know you reacted to it . This movie is truly one of the best movies I ever saw . It is a unique experience to watch this movie for the first time which you can not recreate. Other great underrated Michael Douglas movies are Don't Say A Word 2001 and A Perfect Murder 1998 and Disclosure.
Yeah I love and have these one watch type of movies. You can never relive.
Thanks for watching. Glad you found it. The algorithm didn't like this one haha
I think you gotta follow up with Bill Murray in The Man Who Knew Too Little. 😂
This is a great film. Almost all of Fincher's movies are great, If you haven't seen it, Zodiac is at the top of my list.
First comment here, but hey, i think your watchlist is missing some sci-fi movies.I am myself not a huge fan of sci-fi movies but try watching "Contact" (1997).
Considering what you've already liked, I'm sure you won't regret it.
Greetings from Switzerland 👋🏼
Like this movie, your CHANNEL is underrated.
Appreciate that! 👊

The Game ✓
The main issue I see with this kind of movie assuming it would happen in real life & it's probable that something like this could happen one day is that everyone can plan for every scenario & analyse every detail in the planning of the game but one thing the company is not in control of is the actual client. He or she's actions are unpredictable . Sure the client can be given clues & props to guide them through the game like in this movie but carnt really guarantee the outcome of what they want or expect the client to do as well as ensuring their safety. Sure with the taxi drive arrangements would have been made for that street to be cleared of other cars & people like on a film set that is something the company can be in control off. Take the gun Michael Douglas has he could have got hold of a gun with real bullets at the end & really shot his brother I mean it's possible. As for the fall of the building I know it was all set up but for someone whom is not a stuntman the client could have been seriously hurt from a fall like that. Anyway that is my take on it. No I'm not opposed to this idea it could work in reality despite the many implications & complications involved. Great reaction & yeah I wish I could watch it all over again for the first time too.
SO fucking glad you watched this one!
Me too!
I was getting so many calls for it, I was worried people might've started rioting if I didn't 😂
It was a trip!
Great reaction dude.
Thanks for watching man 🤙
I knew you would love it! Now for the next twisty mind f$#k try Fracture or Frailty......both amazing 🤩
A bit random, but I remember this movie game out about the same time as "LA Confidential" and "The Edge", and I remember liking all three of them. If you haven't seen the others, particularly "LA Confidential", I would. I actually probably haven't seen "The Edge" again since then, so don't know how well it's held up, but, I mean, It's Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. Probably the lesser of the three, but how bad could it be?
I’m late but look forward to your reaction.
You're here. that's the main thing 🙌
Great, underestimated film. Lesson on how to embrace life. A selfish, wealthy man getting learned up. Greed...Loss of control. To make him become a better person and come to terms with his fathers death. Ooooo, what the wealthy can do to teach a lesson. Money is a tool. Used properly it makes something beautiful; used wrong, it makes a horrorifing mess!” It gives some the false sense of privilege that u can go as far as u'd like, which is the scary part, for me. By the way, love ur little alien. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
I'd appreciate it if you watch anything directed by OR just starring Edward Burns

I used to think this movie was completely unbelievable but after seeing some of Derren Brown's tv shows it seems all too believable
Haha!
I went to a live show of his a couple of years ago and I'm still not sure what happened to me 😂
Hi Ryan, if you’d like to be psychologically thrilled again, check out Jacob’s Ladder (1990), starring Tim Robbins, the guy from Shawshank Redemption.
evidently DAVID FINCHER wasn t happy w/ the way this film turned out which i don t understand personally rate it very highly

It’s fine. Stop eating the propaganda.

San Francisco is beautiful.
I absolutely hated this movie and then I loved it and then when he shot his brother and stepped off the roof, I really hated, hated, hated, this movie for about 6 seconds, and then I loved it even more.
Haha!
Derren Brown does this to people 😂
I actually went to see his most recent show. I won't spoil it, but I unknowingly knocked over my beer at one point and I'm holding him responsible. He owes me a beer.
The movie is brilliantly executed and keeps you at the edge of your seat until the end. I just always had problems with the plot. Not a fan of this "everything was completely planned, the complete environment is under total control, every move is predicted correctly, and they where prepared for all eventualities". That's totally OK as a premiss in a "don't takes itself too serious"-heist-movie like Oceans 11 IMHO, but in a serious thriller/drama, it feels a little off for me.
Spike Jonez coming in with late cameo. I could be wrong but the medic at the end looked like Spike Jonez
Completely missed that! Its on his IMDB. Good spot!
You wanted to visit San Francisco. It’s crime ridden shit hole at the moment and I don’t know why anyone would want to visit it right now. Source I live in the SF Bay Area.
It used to be nice.
this movie is so stupid, so many things that don't make sense, especially the ending, he could hve jumpved off anywhere at that point and hit the real ground, but I LOVE IT :> it's the truth about a good movie you can ignore all the faults, the stupidity and things that don't make sense when it's that great.
No, they had safeguards for that.
An absolutely top class film. Not suitable for people who only think in Tik-Tok format and can concentrate for a maximum of two minutes. For everyone else, the film breaks all conventions and leaves concrete paths behind.
