    The squirrel edit omg 😂 as a fellow Toronto renter, I really feel your pain with the squirrels. We built an entire garden bed and a few days later they had dug everything up. Taking notes with your use of chicken wire. We too are hoseless and make repeat trips to fill the watering can haha

    Lots of cool ideas thanks for sharing. A very simple way one could also do this is actually buy perennials. How? I would personally buy a few moderate sized pots whether sitting on the ground on raised up and plant 1-2 David Austin roses in them, ones suited for pots. They are repeat bloomers that bloom across the whole warm season and stay compact and lush with big very fragrant flowers in abundance. Easy and they come back every year. Secondly for interest and the railings having petunias in the hanging planters alternating colors. It's really as simple as that and the patio will be covered in flowers. The only requirement is the area gets decent amount of sun.

    • @b.cormier
      @b.cormier  Před rokem

      Wow thanks so much for your suggestions!! I'll have to look into the David Austin roses, that sounds like a great option (and I love roses). I was planting annuals because I won't live in this apartment forever... but I guess I could always bring the perennials with me to my next place!

    Your garden probably looks different now, but here are a couple of tips!
    Get a few large plants (or trees) instead of only small plants. Large plants needs less watering and are more resilient, so you can go on week long trips without worrying. They are also often perennials, so you can take them inside during the winter.
    You can most likely install a hose on your kitchen water tap (assuming it's your kitchen that leads to the terrace), carrying a giant watering can back and forth so many times will ruin your back.

    • @b.cormier
      @b.cormier  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks a lot for the tips! I did end up getting a hose that attaches to my kitchen sink and it’s been a game changer! As for bigger plants, I’d love to but my apartment is unfortunately not big enough to store plants for the winter - but maybe I can at my parents’ house 👀

    I put small rocks in the dirt of plant containers and some 2 to 3 inch rocks as well. Too heavy for them to move. It keeps the squirrels away. In the summer heat, when they are desperate for water, they try to burrow down to the plant roots to eat them for their moisture. I dug a hole in the ground and placed some fresh water in a bowl for them. I placed the bowl in the ground, so they can't tip it over. Now, I watch them come down a tree, drink the water in the bowl, and climb back up the fence. They are no longer interested in my container plants. Whoo hoo!

    Squirrels love checking out fresh soil just in case there are any NUTS hidden under it! I use stones over the fresh soil in my pots. You can get bags of regular looking stones in the dollar store, or go down to the beach and pick up a bunch, or check out your favourite river for river stones, or you can also get those decorative glass stones in bags at the dollar store. But be generous. You want to cover all the loose dirt. But - you can just pull them off easily in the fall, rinse them off and store then for next year, and it's a lot easier to pour a bunch of stones that to have to lay chicken wire and pin it down. Great job Brooke. And creeping jenny is a crazy spreader (well, when in the ground) so divvy it up and you'll have lots for next year!

    Squirrels🤬- I have success with putting Irish Spring soap (original scent) in the pots. I've been doing that for years now. Just chop it up with a sharp knife and put several chunks in each pot. It's the smell that keeps them away, so you don't have to cover the soil with it.
    Petunias- the ones that grow the best for me are Proven Winners Vista series, AND they don't need deadheading or get sparse and leggy. If you have regular petunias, you can't just pull the spent blossoms out. Find a CZcams video that shows you how.

    Inspiring. Congratulations. I am in a similar process, restarting and learning from last year, here in Mexico. I am keen to explore combining edible and visually pleasing green wall plants, in a similarly limited, constricted space. Thank you again.

    1st time viewer. Speaking of middle aged women, you are doing a fabulous impersonation of one who has been hitting the sauce since noon! Just sayin' ;)
    Cilantro is impossible to grow. Supposedly prefers cooler temp. The Andes perhaps?
    Like every other you tube video-er, you fail to mention EXACTLY what this project COST, which is most important to 99% of the people watching it, I assure you. Now that you have paid for a Costco membership, if you continue the expensive folly of over purchasing you should most definitely split the haul with a friend. If no one is game sell the half you don't need online (unless, of course, you have deep pockets).
    I am in New England where we have had so much rain all my container plants on the deck are absolutely stunted due to drowning, so I have not had the watering problem. There are products you can put in containers that retain moisture. Soil Moist Granules is one. Happy Decking!

    Squirrels??? I started my very FIRST garden on the side of the house. I got up early to go to work. Went to check out my garden and to my HORROR some thing of someone had helped themselves to my garden. I wailed "Waaaaaahhhh". My daughter came running to see what was wrong. When I explained, she laughed. "Welcome to gardening" she said. I can relate.
