Ricky Gervais has just played this on his Twitter tonight so I expect it'll be getting alot more traffic and rightly so it's from another epoch. So ethereal. Glad he played it. Peace
i suddenly covered Van Occupanther album from them 3 months ago, and been a fan ever since. i realized that the singer which i adored the most, is no longer here... but you know what? Midlake is just that amazing. i know it must be hard for him to fit the original key, but it is not about Tim only. some pitchy sounds too, because it must be a lil bit out of his range. but hey! Midlake is not about Tim only. we talk about the "whole" band itself. i see some of his live videos, and he still can satisfy me. they can satisfy me. hard to accept still, but Midlake must go on!!!! 😸
I mean there are videos of Tim singing it in this key as well from 2010, 2 years before he had left the band. I think it's ultimately inconsequential, but that's just me! No judgement at all
I dunno, I'd say changing the singer affects it more than changing the key. Anyway, this song will always be epic. Gutted that I had not discovered Midlake at this point as I am local to Manchester, and MIdlake have since become one of my favourite folk bands.
I was reminded of Roscoe and Midlake recently when I came across the Beyond The Wizard Sleeve remix recently (coincidentally it released on Spotify this year?), which had introduced me to them when I was younger. I read that their original singer had left and that Eric had taken up the mantle, which made me want to see how he made it sound. And by god, am I glad. The key change does affect it quite a bit, but I personally love it. I've been rewatching this over and over the last couple of days, and I'm catching up on their post-occupanther catalogue.
i mean it's good that he's not trying to imitate Tim Smith, and he's a perfectly fine singer, but his voice is so unsuited to Occupanther-era Midlake. I guess they have to play because I think they know it's their best stuff, but he manages to turn something almost mystical and intangible into something so pedestrian.
Midlake continuing to perform and record under that name without Tim Smith is like the beach boys without Brian Wilson. They should have changed their name.
I miss Tim Smith. Sorry, it's not the same without him on lead vocals. In fact, you guys should only be singing songs from Antiphon and nothing before then. That's Tim's stuff.
They should be ashamed of themselves singing a song which was written solely by a former band member. Along with every other song up to 2010 - when Midlake finished.
One of the most devastatingly beautiful songs ever written.
such a haunting song for some reason
Will T That was the word I was looking for to describe this song
It has a bunch of minor chords and the harmonies are good. That’s all.
Much of their music is haunting, leaves a lasting impression

This is my absolutely favorite version of the song. It seems more poignant and haunting, especially toward the end with the vocal tremble.
I heard this first on 6 music and come back to it again and again as one of the most moving and soothing tracks ever (and I am quite old)
I think this is the best version I've heard so far. Lead guitar is pretty brilliant here.
i am addicted to this band, i am craving to see them live in London when this fucked up life is over
Not the same band anymore tho bub, unless they got their old vocalist back...
May be the song of the century
I’d agree, definitely the best out of America
I had a Bull Terrier named Roscoe....tears me up every time. He was Spud's brother.

What a tune, incredible album!
Damn i love this song
Merveilleux moment d'émotion ! c'était beau.
Great, great Song!!!!!!!
Neil Young 'like a hurricane' anyone? And I mean that in the most positive way.
I think that way too!
I meet midlake by a bmx movie from Mutiny Bikes Like 12 years ago, i love them
yooo this comment made me so happy to see
Fucking stunning.
I like Eric's voice but changing the key really effects the whole song
i see. seems like he cant reach some high pitches too. but Midlake will always be Midlake. great sounds!

Maybe the best song in the entire world?
Sure, IT IS!!!!!!
eric voice make it more like choir but its still midlake
anyone knows more songs like that?
I miss some more from the bassline
It's just not the same and without tims voice it's almost like if the band played Bob Dylan without the Bob Dylan
i mean it's good that he's not trying to imitate Tim Smith, and he's a perfectly fine singer, but his voice is so unsuited to Occupanther-era Midlake. Couldn't have said it better myself
I don't agree. He sounds excellent
Antiphon is a stunning album 'i think they know it's their best stuff' - all of it is brilliant, no need to strike a preference.
Keanu Reeves on lead guitar.
Tims voice is a lot more suited to this
Just check Tim Smith version of this in other videos....I absolutly prefer this one
Yeah, he has a nice voice, but definitely not live
Good, but not Tim Smith good...
yes I agree
+Jeff Lasher strongly agree
Midlake continuing to perform and record under that name without Tim Smith is like the beach boys without Brian Wilson. They should have changed their name.
Agree to some degree but it's not that the rest of Midalke are bad on any level. They are great as well but it's nopt the same w/o Tim.
Or like Genesis without Gabriel. yeah I agree they should have changed the name.
Fleet Foxes for sad(er) people.
without tim at the helm ... i mean, this is just not very good.
Fek me hes off key inni?
I miss Tim Smith. Sorry, it's not the same without him on lead vocals. In fact, you guys should only be singing songs from Antiphon and nothing before then. That's Tim's stuff.
Midfake.
Well, this isnt ACTUALLY Midlake...
Eric is a far superior singer to Tim. There. Suck that.
Stop, police, this is no longer midlake! sorry but change your name or stop
***Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, and Faith No More are laughing***
Gosh, this just sounds terrible. Didn’t know the old singer is out. Shame.
They should be ashamed of themselves singing a song which was written solely by a former band member. Along with every other song up to 2010 - when Midlake finished.
Well, with him not here, we still want to hear the song. I couldn't give a shit who wrote, in any way, they're doing his job.
Cringe
No Tim Smith, no good im afraid
