oh god ive made plenty but i dont do weddings these days .Getting the names wrong of the married couple.Thats pretty bad
I started playing the wrong song for the first dance. I noticed and changed it fast but that was bad. I also had dance songs skip a few times back when we used CDs because the disc was scratched and I didn't realize it was scratched. But I always had backup ready to go.
745 is the best I can do.
I once screwed up the names of the wedding party and had to redo the intro because they needed it correct for the video. I was so pissed at myself for not reading it from a card or paper. After that I stopped trusting my memory.

Another DJ mistake I would add would be, Taking every gig that comes your way. I did this my first year and quickly realized that if I am in this for the long run I want to enjoy it. If im taking gigs that I know I am going to hate (ex: sweet 16s, bridezillas, people who hate good music, assholes) I know I am just gonna hate myself during the gig and might end up seeing DJing as a drag. Its better to talk to the ient first to see if their personality and their music selection will be a good fit otherwise its a HARD PASS.
Best lesson I ever learned when getting into this I was told. Donât chase it. Meaning, donât do every gig because you can or need to and more importantly, donât let the client cut away at your pricing. Chances are those clients will expect you to jump through rings of fire backwards. And of course Iâve chased because at times as I felt it was better to book a gig than have a free Saturday. Ainât worth it.

I'm not arguing with you :) but I usually play the entire song and I get positive comments like 'Most DJ's play a few bars and then cut it off but I like to hear a song'. Just my way but can't really be a mistake, just a different style IMHO
i gotta agree, club is much differrent than a wedding where they say "can you stop doing that, we want to hear most or all of the song" (no matter how good the mix. They want a transition, that's about it in my area
Don't be a Douche was my favorite mistake! "All we do is press play and make people dance". At the end of the day that's it, lol. I'm a full time gigging musician and I also DJ weddings so to hear those words out loud made me chuckle. Love your channel my man!!!

Seriously... undercutting is such a hack thing to do!! FB wedding/vendor groups show the practice in full shameful view. Example: Bride posts âlooking for reasonably priced DJ for my weddingâ... and then like a brazzers video they all come out of the woodwork. Dog eating dog posting their pricing packages. Hey checkout my silver package... hey check out my VIP rockstar package... only $600. So nauseating man, but honestly, those arenât the clients Iâm after. But since weâre on the topic, what are your thoughts on pricing an event? Do you believe in packages, a la carte, do you price things out like a contractor does do a job? Great video once again keep them coming!
I actually like a la carte because it gives the client more freedom. And I agree for me personally if a client is price shopping a DJ then theyâre not for me typically

LOL - the last one was great. I constantly get weird comments directed at me from venue owners saying, "you DJs do this, do that, always want to be the center of attention..." its always negative conotations around the DJ.

Biggest mistake, if anyone in the comment section can believe it......not having enough music for the timetable I was booked for.
Not even kidding, first wedding I ever did I thought a few pre-downloaded pre mixed playlists and my Itunes library would be enough for three hours. *Immediately* realized the hours worth of "hits" I thought would kill were bombing left and right and the songs people were liking I just didn't have.
Didn't even have paired streaming services or an active Wifi connection to go to CZcams....I had to start replaying songs at the end of the night and it was definitely noticed. Never happened again showed up to the next event with quadruple the amount of music I needed with three different streaming apps paired to VDJ. So cringey.

yes mixing two songs together that are in the same bpm but the wrong key and have clashing vocals or very different tunes.Sometimes its hard to avoid but then you just chop at the right moment or echo out and then on to the next .As you get know what works by geting behind your decks at home as often as you can and experimenting will help get your tunes in order .But give yourself room to move around so as to change things up if you have a regular spot or if one course isnt working then you can move in another direction.Getting crates in order can take months and with new songs coming in it can be almost endless but its good to take the time to try things out as you go through your crates.
I love the verse - chorus and get out of there! My other issue is exactly what you brought up about UNDER- CUTTING . This is happening in my Orlando area and we got the bigger companies like Our Dj Rocks charging a going rate and then a new guy moves into town and starts doing wedding shows and puts up a banner that says 799.00 for ceremony - cocktail hr.- reception - Mc- uplighting - dance floor lights ! Wtf. It pisses me off immensely. Great great Content ! As always !
I hear you brother. Kristin and the girls at my DJ rocks are great. Being in a super tourist town, youâll get a lot of fly by night companies rolling through there. Hopefully those companies watch the undercutting part of this video haha
I agree, just getting started in DJing as a 2nd business. I feel the industry itself has undercut the profitability is set the price point too low.
People will pay several thousand for a photographer but they act like a DJ should only be $600.00.
As a result most DJs are accepting jobs for this low amount.
It is hard to build a good quality equipment arsenal at that return.
I find the social media world of DJing can help to get DJs on the same page to correctly charge for the service and equipment we are investing in.

Hey Nick, Loving your vids brother...know you energy, enthusiasm & Serato knowledge is appreciated! I recently got back into Doing after 23 years (I know right!?) am mixing on a Denon DJ MC7000, mainly Deep/Organic House, Melodic Techno & Progressive House and I gots a question for you pertaining to this vid and what you call "slow mixing"... backstory first, ofr the most part I'm mixing in & out the first/last 60-90 seconds of each track I play, for me it's about the journey and super slow long transitions that take people on a journey. I'm not a wedding DJ (nor want to do that), I've played a few clubs and bars which has been fun and great learning experiences! I've recently done a few parties and really dig that vibe and am happy to make that my pathway...back to the question, what would be your advice on how to mix the styles of music I mentioned? Was also thinking of playing around with Serato Flip, how would you suggest I structure the re-edits? I'm curious...and thanks again for your content!

Really dope! Thanks brotha! Serato is great for making edits how you want them and as far as mixing, it really is subjective. When it comes to house mixing I think riding those eqs and taking your time is the best way. Quick mixing is best for open format dance sets but with what youâre doing I think itâs definitely best to take them on a journey!!

I recently went to a family wedding in the middle of a field (no lie). The DJ was awful but get this: he billed himself as a âsinging DJâ. Hand to God, the guy could carry a tune in ANYTHING!! When he started singing, we left IMMEDIATELY.
As for DJing, he made seriously odd choices in his playlist and couldnât even fade from one track to the next smoothly.
yeah i have all my songs cue pointed so half the time theres a jump that cuts out the middle or any guff that isnt needed and we get to the good parts .When people are dancing and having a good time they dont notice especially if you are on point .In the old days some mixes i would chop others had long mixes like a live bootleg .Others would get back and forth between two records and some i would have two copies so i could live edit but i never played whole songs just the good parts.These days its cue points or my own edits pre prepared especially when doing it live is tricky timing wise and you cant always remember how you play every track so its nice to make edits for the floor when i have time.Theres is nothing worse than the energy of the floor being drained by playing a track as is and just standing around watching it.

I completely agree with you to an extend, I think the average ear now is more in tune with mixing than ever before. But I personally judge a DJ on what they play before I look at how they're playing it.

Love the first four tips but undercutting is an illusion. People will pay good money for good talent. You get what pay you for essentially.
I agree. If you're charging the most in your market (and getting your price) then undercutters won't effect you because you have a high end clientele that isn't worried about price. But if you're charging average price and a company comes in cheap who's just as good, then it'll effect you big time.
My biggest pet peeve are djs who are stuck in their style don't go to me like "nah the crowd just didn't get my style." nah bro ur stuck in your way and didn't read the crowd at all. You can't force people to do what u want.. U find a way to make em wanna do it..
I knew a DJ who had a magnet sign made up that he would put on his car stating his rock bottom price as he drove around town. This guy was supposed to be a local legend and was out there trying to undercut the other DJs. On the surface it seemed like a clever strategy .... But in the end he just created a situation where he had to do two or three gigs to match up with other DJs that charged more.
It was like volunteering to work for minimum wage!

Great video dude! The undercutting bit makes for a hot debate. What do you do as a brand new DJ company with less content and experience under your belt? You obviously have to consider pricing yourself a little less right? How would you justify your prices otherwise if you donât yet compare to a bigger more established company? Especially if you canât offer the same bells and whistles. Just a thought!
It depends on your experience. If youâre new to weddings with a new company then I agree. If youâre an experienced DJ and you just started your own company, you should set your prices based on the average of your market and then go up from there. Bells and whistles donât matter, the couple can always rent those separate. Itâs the talent that dictates price! Never cheat yourself by accepting less than youâre worth.

On the point of undercutting price.
If you are a single op this is great advice and I completely agree.
If you are a multi op you can offer âpackagesâ. At our company we charge $2000 for our DJs that are well known in our area of Arkansas. $2000 is a lot for Arkansas. But for the rest of our DJs that are less experienced or just less known, we have less expensive packages. The less expensive packages we tell the DJs donât bring out all your equipment, we require the client to provide some equipment on the lowest packages. That way the client knows that they could get a better experience if they pay more than $600.
This way we get more business in the Arkansas area, because there are a lot of Joe blows that charge $20 to DJ for six hours around us. But we donât undercut our value as a company.
I know our industry would love to do price-fixing like gas stations and health insurance companies. However, there will always be Joe blow out theyâre ruining peoples weddings for $20. And there will always be that one DJ that charges $600. There is no way for everyone in our industry to come together and agree on $2000. So in order for us to stay competitive in Arkansas we have to offer a lower $600 package, that we make very clear to the client is less of a value.
And honestly a lot of people go for the higher packages after they hear what the lowest one is.
Having a lower package can add value to your higher packages if thereâs enough of a gap in services.

im not a mixing dj i did some practice runs in my drive way doing that and did not like it at all. i do blend songs that will go into each other when one song is about to end i got the next ready to blend in and continue the fun
as most of my work has been in clubs and kind of underground type clubs .Talking wasnt a thing .Which suited me just fine .I hate doing it and i often let others do it instead if need be.

Hereâs a few over the years: Tripped circuit breaker with full dance floor. Left hard drive at home. Didnât have keys to the trailer. Flat tire. I recovered from all these and they all went well. Now I have a checklist and visual inspection of each item twice before I leave. In 13 years, no couple or guest has ever asked me to scratch, so I donât bother with that. Iâve heard DJs do a really bad job with this. I do mix songs and thatâs cool.
if two songs have the same bpm but are not good together but you have to play them one after the other then just chop at the right moment.These days with master tempo,time stretch,what ever you like to call it this not as much of an issue but if two songs that do not sound good bump up against each other than chop it but be careful how and when

Mistake 1234567 guilty guilty guilty except for mistake 6 as a single OP I really cant compare my prices. My parties vary completely from month to month. More family events than Weddings and believe me I still lose about 10 events a year to people who dont see my value or have that cousin who is dj. This is the reason I love this channel. I will have some Weddings next summer I know for sure I will be ready to kill it. Thank brother for all the effort and time it takes to provide and produce this content.

if i scratch then i have to practice a whole lot before i try it live or on a recording as i am not a natural.There have been mixes that i have done that came off well but i practiced the mix many many times.I dont do a lot in public but my sets often are programmed well and usually flow well and thats where my strengths usually lie
i do a bit of scratching but i know im not a turntablist .I have at times done mixes with a bit of scratching in them and recorded them but i practiced and practiced first.I limit my live scratching because its not where my strength lies.I would like to improve my skills but i will not practice when im at a paid gig.At first i had cheap decks that were not built for scratching so i never got into the habit but i would like to do more as it can be enormous fun.
