Just found this ans I have been djing for a long time. I will never forget I was djing at a bar and this girl asked me if I was new (new to djing) I said no why do you ask? (Not sure to get offended or what). She smiled and said no your very nice and not used to djs that are nice and actually listen and she told me I was doing a good job. đđđŒ
Not just DJ skill that you need to have,
People skill is important alsoâŒïž
Nice one you're making a lot of sense. I covered a Pub once in south London for the resident DJ who told me it was dead by 10:30, One of the artists he mentioned to me that he played was Lady Ga Ga, I did my home work and went there a few days before. He got it SO WORNG! on my night I opened with Gill Scott Heron The Bottle my second song was Funky Nassau Begging of the end. three guy's sitting in the pub bought me a drink and People were still dancing at 1am and the Bar man said it was the best night they had in ages. Thanks for the Video
Nick- youâre spot on. Being polite and nice is definitely an added bonus. Thanks for all the videos!
Staying humble goes a long way.
Those two songs by Redbone and Looking Glass were in Guardians of the Galaxy. You could have probably dropped a few more songs from that soundtrack and kept the young peopleâs interest as well as the older crowd. Works great with both groups.
"Being Polite and nice is a competitive advantage" That is an incredibly awesome and sad quote
I take my bar gigs- with lot of respect- its what makes me get hired over and over-
Brandy - Guardians of the Galaxy movie (soundtrack Vol 2) brought this song back. Same with Come and Get Your Love (Vol 1).
I'm the DJ. Lol
đđ§
Great suggestions. I really wish more DJâs did these things. Itâs really all about consideration. You are taking both the interests of your listeners, and the interests of the venue into consideration. Thatâs what DJing is all about, or at least should be.
I think you're so right about manners and being polite these days, it is absolutely a competitive advantage and has paid me dividends in my life. Love all your videos and your whole theory on DJ'ing
Really great video. Insight to what a real DJ is all about. It's not about the mixing. It's about music knowledge and how it affects people's mood.
Great video! Many of those "opening DJ" machines have an app you can download to your phone and it also shows the top played songs from that machine. Might help give you a feel for what's been going on there.
Another touch tunes tip. It will show you the upcoming songs. Sometimes if you start at 10 and that song that someone paid for didn't get played, they will likely come up and let you know, so it's often a good idea to either let the jukebox play the upcoming songs and you start a few minutes late or, just play the song for them. If you play it, Sometimes they notice the change in direction of sound (I never understand how people don't notice where the sound is coming from) they might mention to the manager/bartender/owner how cool it was for you to do that for them.
I think touch tunes also has *most played* so you get an idea of what ppl request there..
I buy a song on the jukebox and have the bartender fade out the song on my song. I will try to play a song that I can load up on my system in case the crowd is digging in it.
All gold! Keep up the great work đ€
100% on the polite & nice being a competitive advantage.
I started out beat matching with an old toy record player that had a variable resistor I connected to the motor's power line to control the speed. I would listen to the radio on a Saturday night and match the tempo of every song played with the one record I owned at the time. It was 1985. I was 14. Cut to the 90s and I find out they make record players that do the same thing so I'm using old Technics with a knob for the pitch and a bunch of crates filled with 45s and LPs. Life got much easier with Virtual DJ then even better when I moved to Serato. The one thing I learned in all the years playing music is that *what* you play is less important than what you *don't* play. People will only remember why they stopped dancing. Knowing the difference is what keeps DJs alive. I enjoy your videos, bro. Great stuff!!
Two thumbs up.on point bro.cheers
haha! Love it! Looking Glass and Redbone! That's my crowd I play to, and can find most of those types of tunes in my personal playlist. Thanks for the video. Great tips for a new DJ.
You never heard the song Brandy by Looking Glass? Number one in 1972! Are you freakin' kiddin' me??? Damn Young punk... lol
Interesting side note... My friend Steve Homner wrote that song when he was 20 years old. He made the mistake of selling it to Elliot Lurie. Lurie was the leader of the band "Looking Glass." Steve got $1600.00 for that song. Because he sold it, he got NO royalties & didn't even get the song writing credit. Steve passed away on Aug. 16, 2017 of Parkinson's disease.
I've never had this, because usually when you go to a a bar you have to bring your own equipment. So you usually carray a lot when you try to come in the first time, so the security sees me and just let me straight in, no questions asked.
"DJ Request Only" got me weak! HAHAHAHAAA! Great advice and awesome vids
Where is the rest of this video/show? I was just getting started with you and now I have to watch everything. Thanks for the banger tips.
You let the secret out of the bag with the juke box apps!! Been doing this for awhile now!! Good stuff đ€đŸ
Real talk Nick đđđ
EXCELLENT POST!!!
I wish I had a Brother like you!!!
Very true about being nice and polite
Love the pointers! Makes so much sense unfortunately common sense is not so common now days đ€Łđđ also request pricing doubles with live dj! Lol might put my QR code on the touch Tunes when I start this weekend. I wish you linked the full episode on the end screen wanted to keep watching but it ended.. what a few CZcams channels are doing is putting 2 videos on the end screen (a short clip/video & the full episode where that clip came from) thanks for the great content brother! Keep rocking! Love your consistency đȘđŒđđŒđ€đŒ
Spinelli!!! You are mad genius Brotha!! You always make too much damned sense đđđđ€©đ€©đ€©đ„đ„
Itâs also important to form a LLC. Someone trips over one of your cords or a speaker falls on them and you get sued. Gotta protect yourself.
After 40+ years in sports television and dealing with Fire Marshals, one of the first things I learned was that cable troughs and a $20 roll of Gaff Tape are your best friend (and this also applies to both DJ's or KJ's). If there's any chance someone could trip on a cable it gets taped down. This helps protect both you and the venue from law suits as it shows that someone had to make an effort to trip on a cable that was properly secured.
@@MissKarenByouâre the best đđ»
nice points bro!
Man you legit got me hooked on the first topic, I was expecting the worst like watch out for bars lol
SPOT ON..NICKSTER
first gig in a bar in about 5 years for me so cant wait to get back to it... doing fridays 5-9pm so all the after work crew and its the most popular after work bar in town.
Last song of the night Gallery-Itâs So Nice to Be with You!!
All facts got my sub
I gigged at a bar with live bands. The bands an i mixed in and out of each other between their breaks.
Good stuff Nick as always .. how bout a segment on Private Parties like For New Years .. playlists etc
Ok Nick GOOD ONE you got my att.
Looking Glass is a one hit wonder og tune. No heat man
Love that : "do you know who I am " lol đ€Ł
There is a 2 year-old subject that came back to surface: "How long should a song be played?"
How long do you play a song on Twitch? How long do you play a song on a bar/wedding/club?
Everything you just mentioned, I do the exact same thing lol, especially listen to whatâs playing on Touch Tunes to understand the crowd⊠Good Stuff đđŒâŠ Now talk about why Bars are to cheap to pay us Djâs more money.
Great video ive been playing in bars and restaurants for a while now. Pre pandemic What I've noticed alot of the times. The house system sounds good and loud but when i connect to the house system. Half the speakers dont work and it sounds really quiet. I know its not my mp3. All of them are 320.
Yes bro thatâs what I been saying !! Everytime I would start djing at the bar as soon as I walk in here comes the young ones asking me to play some new stuff not this old school crap and Iâm looking around and the older crowd is having a good time like why should I change all that up for so I usually continue to what they been doing that way they stay longer and like you said the bar makes money and of course like you said they donât end up staying the whole night but still I donât want to throw them out as soon as I get on
I would also add if you see songs in the Queue on touch tones that wonât get played now that the dj is starting maybe go ahead and mix those songs in so people donât feel cheated when they turn off the jukebox. I find that customer are appreciative of that.
Hey Nick GREAT video!!! The only reason I know that song is because my wive's name is Brandi! She spells it with an "i" at the end đ
I've been hosting Karaoke for a long time. At the moment I'm just doing a regular Friday gig at and they set e up great steak dinner that night and many are still there when I set up at 8. The jukebox is going and it's all over the place. Urban rap to country. The song I open with ad a singer host has to as you said want them to stay longer and this song works well. I hate singing it as you can imagine. But Sweet Caroline gets them singing and pumped up. Then Brandy lol and it's so nice to be with you. War Pigs....
Do you use Technics and Serato when you play at weddings?
My first boss in Fairfield NJ was in Looking Glass before they blew up. Lol fun fact.
in some ways djing at a bar is harder than at a club. It's rather hard to calmly build up and not overwhelm people so they can still chat. I also play for like 4 hours and dont want to go pop resulting in a LOT of digging for music that would apply to a broader audience and keeping those heads nodding.
Lol đ€Ł im the DJ and heres my ID.
Oh yeah i guess all the equipment i help u with earlier ...makes sense...
Every gig ive done everyone always helps me
đ€·ââïž and I USE TIDAL this year with pre mixes.
And ROLLER SK8 ....
Got a question Nick.. youâre playing a birthday party say a 30th. What bpm are u starting with. Set 4 hours long đ
Fun fact on the touchtune jukeboxes, you don't even have to be at the bar to play music on it. Most of them have the song baby shark in them too . . . so do with that what you will.
You evil man!! đđ
The tune "Brandy" was in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2.
100%
I played at a bar that had a good crowd on weekends. At the last minute the girl in charge of entertainment told me not to mix. Just fade out / fade in. I was annoyed but honored her request. They didn't invite me back bc the owner said I didn't play well. I'd hate to speak ill of the dead but that girl ruined my chance at a residency!!
Your job is not to be kind. It's being professional. It means saying both yes and no!
@@stefanstrandqvist9530 True. A short time later I went to that same bar and a DJ was mixing deep house. Should've been like that guy
How did you not know Brandy?
Hilarious but truth be told bro.
Guardians of the galaxy bud
Huge fucking hit
silly question, what's the point of playing anywhere if you have to play what they want? they may as well just keep the jukebox.. a dj playing should be something special right
Whatâs the point of playing for a crowd if you donât care about them? You can do that at home right? Itâs mutual. We turning up together â€
Match Bpms⊠I try to play the same song
4:47 "you what this is?" Skynet trying to take our jobs is what it is
Brandy was a huge banger before you were born lol
This is so true. I too am a DJ and indeed, I am a douche
Mary jane girls CANDY MAN / PROVE IT MIX
Quick question:: Can I use that jukebox app to request Tom Jonesâ âItâs Not Unusualâ 14 times in a row?
Only if you promise to put in one "What's New Pussycat" somewhere in the middle.
đđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Never heard of a DJ that never heard of Looking Glass?! đ€
Come on man you gotta know "brandy" by looking glass
This is the internet, so of course people are going to leave Nick comments about how they can't believe he doesn't know the Brandy song. As if it was a #1 single from Hall & Oats, and not some uncharted song from a group that didn't release anything.
I've heard a million songs in my life, and can say I've never heard this shit either. This shit's obscure as hell and nobody would know it if it hadn't been in a Marvel movie.
Is this the whole video? Isn't it ending to rough or is it just me?
Good info but just want to add you donât always have to play whatâs similar from before on the jukebox. Iâve done this but patrons would want a diff vibe and sometimes the jukebox is playing the corniest shit ever till the DJ comes to revive the night lol.
bro, stop taking drugs, relax, take a deep breath
WE work the same-
people will come to here what a good dj is playing not whats played everyday all day in the bar what's the point of a dj then.a good dj brings new music to the people not a loop repeat dj
Dare to be brave, but do not be stupid
Facts. A good dj never plays the same shit.
Iâm a bartender an I stepped out side an I also got ID since I left the building I show my ID but he didnât believe me I told him I was the bartender he said itâs a fake so I show him my liquor permit an still he didnât let me back in ?? I was not been disrespectful but I call the owner well woke him up an said I stepped out side know I canât back in to work the Barr the dj stop the show just to get me behind the Barr but I was still respectful an said they were just doing there jod Iâm good letâs keep the party
real mccoy come and gfet your love for the 90's kids
Good stuff
Brandyâs a sing along lol
Coming from older DJ
Shoes in a drier? HA HA HA. I am stealing that. Sue me.
You make me laugh (in a good way)... " too cool for school ", " show them your id ". What ID do you show them - driving licence or your dj card. Give them a dj card offer them discount for their grannies 80th birthday. Buy a flashing LED hat that says "The DJ has arrived ". Bloody bouncers and security đ€Łđ€Ł
Nick pro tip: show your id, if you are underage, dont show your id. LOL
Hmmm good tips ty hmm you started with that then end of the video ??? Where is the rest of the story ????đ€Łđ€Łđ€ŠđŸââïžđ€ŠđŸââïž
I agree with you but u gotta chill on the coke, bro.
When you 1st start out its almost impossible to read the crowd, let's keep it real....you are a slave to them at first even if you play the same songs as the big names..once you establish credibility then the crowd allows u to control the vibe
Even when playing the same song as the big names the crowd will not respond the same as to when the big name plays it
All seat time, survive the 1st few years then gain credibility...keep pushin
Can you be my dad
don't show your id, make your presence known to the bouncers like you did the manager.
Are the worst first gig 2003 wannbe battle dj had 2 new 12s and a crate of club but 60% battle 12s god I wang it.Still got my guap I lived ontopof this bar club his dj ATLEAST minnows how it had already started luckily they had a pioneer very popular back then that was the only perk but they cherry ontop it was a Mexican affair Iâm a white Irish kid scared to dead
Do you want to slow your speach anymore, so you can keep people listening. I just left your video immediately after skipping tones of it
Miss me on this one nick
