Thoughts on the Rolex 1908 - Will it succeed?

- Rolex announced the Rolex Perpetual 1908 at watches and wonders 2023. It's not available in any store yet but this is a super interesting release. Why?
Because the Cellini was a failure and this is a do-over. Rolex really wants to succeed in the high end dress watch space.
Will it succeed? These are my initial thoughts.
I very curious as to what you guys think about this watch, especially those few that have had hands on.

I don’t understand the snobbery of dress watches. Rolex draws from its past and combines traits from current designs to make a new line. I think it looks good.
We all like what we like or as they say "you do you". That's what it's all about 😀😀😀
I absolutely agree with your opinion and criticisms about this oddball release. Everyone was expecting the Cellini line to either be refreshed or made extinct but not replaced. The 1908 doesn't seem to offer any advantage over the discontinued Cellini. Especially that it is priced higher and it now loses it's moonphase complication. So now you are getting less watch for more money! It's like Rolex punished us for not liking the Cellini, similar to a mother taking away a lollipop from a child whinging about the flavour and so she gives him a carrot stick instead.
Indeed many Rolex fans & watch enthusiasts say they like it but would they actually buy it considering the other options available, as you mentioned. However, I'm sure Rolex have meticulously planned this and they tend to know their customers better than we do and are masters of playing chess with us, being able to predict what consumers want before we ourselves know. It won't be too long until we are all on a waitlist to own it! Chances are Rolex is wanting a bigger presence in the luxury dress watch space. Just like the CPO program, they want a bigger slice of the already huge slice of cake, crumbs & cream included! I see this being a segways into other perhaps complicated models. Hopefully the new factory they are opening will be dedicated to haute horology. As the 1908 name suggests, maybe they will be reviving some old watchmaking and highly sought after models. Let's hope.
Only Rolex knows what Rolex knows in the end. They have proven they are pretty good at hitting what people want and charging accordingly for them....

took the words right out of my mouth its exactly the kind of review this watch deserves and yes fully agree I decline to be put on the waiting list still prefer the 36 mm daydate and if I want a dress watch for that kind of money the PP or the L are way above

I completely disagree with your thoughts, it has heritage, they’ve borrowed from the past, the Rolex is understated elegance.. I’d like to see the white gold with black leather strap than black but that’s it….

Just rewatched this video 6 months later. Still feel like the analysis is spot on. Mike’s videos are basically just him talking and showing stick pics and vids of the watches but this guy is incredibly insightful. One of these watch companies should hire him as a consultant

Great analysis. I certainly appreciate the effort from Rolex here. The brutalism of the arabic numerals provides a something of a unique identity for the piece. It also detracts from its overall elegance, so I'm not sure the trade-off is worth it. But the biggest problem for me is that they succumbed to the temptation to print "Superlative Chronometer" on the face of the dial. That's a full-on violation of dress-watch code. They didn't make that mistake with the Cellini, why do it here?
Like I said. It's a mish mash of ideas. The more I think about it the "superlative..." is like you said the worst sin for a dress watch

I think they are doing a “chop the legs” move where they are undermining the “technology” of the competition so basically look at us we are giving you a far better technical watch than the others for your money, aimed towards the uninformed new customer who may not realise the money is in the finishing of the others not the hacking or the best chronometer or most drop friendly one.

When I saw the 1908 with the ice blue/ guilloche dial with platinum case, I was seriously thinking about getting. I usually am not into dress watches, however still love it.
So I contacted a good friend of mine, who is into watches. He shared with me this variant is 31000€.
Now: when I reacted, I didn‘t care what material the casing is, I couldn‘t care less about the automatic work. I simply loved it.
But at the end of the day it is a 3 Hand watch. And overpriced. I still love it…
As a dress watch fanatic, I particularly appreciated your excellently worded thoughts regarding the aesthetics and appeal (and difficulty!) of a beautifully designed dress watch with a movement to match. I think Rolex missed a possible opportunity with the Cellini moonphase, which is actually quite a gorgeous dial, by not offering it in steel at half the price. I think the same problems will exist with the new 1908 line, haven't seen it in person yet, but the dial looks curiously flat to me, and having the syloxi instead of parachrome hairspring is strange, as well.

I had the moonphase on a bucket list of watches I wanted to get and then they up and disontinued it. It was really good looking, gorgeous even like you state.
The 1908 is a "work in progress" for now.

Loved the discussion on the language used to market the pieces discussed. Captured the essence of this market segment quite well.
Why would you think the Rolex movement is superior to the 2 others. Both PP and ALS movements are way above the Rolex (100% robot production) level.
The 1908 hour hand is a copy of Urban Jurgensen.
The 1908 is twice as expensive as the previous moonphase Cellini. Go figure..
I only think so from a technical perspective. (Robustness, anti-magnetic properties, long term precision)
Just like Ferrari makes a more powerful and beautiful engine, I would likely trust a mercedes engine to be more reliable over time.
My own personal experience with Lange is that you have to baby them a bit more than you would a Rolex.
But nothing beats the finishing of Lange of course with Patek coming a close second (of the trinity + lange)..

Watching this 9 months on. The ADs in SoCal still don’t have the new Ti YM - not even the exo pieces.
I liked the Cellini much more than the 1908. But obviously Rolex is well positioned to take this risk. Because you’re spot on - the delay was intentional to gauge interest.

Selling dress watches these days is a tough sell. The lion's share of sales is with steel sporty models. For example, almost all the hype on Patek and AP are on the Royal Oak and Nautilus/Aquanaut models, and not as much on their large traditional catalogue of dress models. One of the main reasons why Rolex has gotten so big is that they were one of the first to almost exclusively push and sell sporty watches which has meshed perfectly with the trends of social informality since the end of WW2. Now Rolex wants to try and have success selling a classic dress model at a very high price, and no one in living memory associates Rolex with that style. People pay a large premium for a Rolex because it looks like a Rolex...and that means a sporty watch-not a dress watch. The market is also very crowded, competitive and established in high priced dress watches, so it is going to take Rolex a long time to change perceptions.
I like this new Cellini but I love the Lange.....

He is right. We have researched this, and it turned out that dress watch buyers purchase these watches for style, to match their suit, and for other non-technical reasons.
The Rolex 1908 is stunning. Why not offer it in stainless steel? For US $20K you could buy a stainless steel Rolex Submariner and a Cartier tank.

Almost makes me wonder what's wrong with me because when I first saw it, I loved it, and was surprised to see something remotely 'different' from Rolex. Against the compared pieces, I think it looks the best. If I was a billionaire I'd grab one. Alas, I'm not, so my opinion remains irrelevant. Thanks for the analysis!

Wow! That is an excellent insight video on this watch. Probably the most insight on this watch on CZcams. I like this watch. I want to see how the bezel plays with the light. I want to see diamond markers on this watch. Rolex 1908 is an excellent starting point. I think it needs to be refined over decades. It's good. Not perfect.

Respectfully, I can’t help wonder if the 1908 had PP or VC on the dial, if the analysis would be the same. Love dress watches but I also want them to be as competent as possible. I owned the JLC MC date sector dial and own the Omega ck 859 and can honestly say that I’m much happier with the Omega, because of the technicity of the movement and the gorgeous ag925 dial.

I have a Ck859 and agree with you. My problem with very high end is the constant concern with the delicacy of the movement, even if my fear is unfounded in reality there is still the subjective angst plus the ( often ) crazy cost and inconvenience of servicing. Yes, competency of movement is very important to me in a dress watch even if only for my sense of security. I also have an Omega boutique edition in red that inspires a similar sentiment.
@@gazz501 Great point. I didn’t mention it but the reason I sold the JLC was because after a year and a half it started to run slow -8 seconds. Now it was probably magnetised, which is an easy fix but the thing is though the movement is considered “higher-end” it just doesn’t have the robustness and reliability of an Omega o Rolex.
Funny you mention it. I’ve had two JLCs in addtion to the one I have now and currently my wife has a reverso as well.
The movements are not robust at all. They are really sensitive - knocks, magnetism - you have to baby them or they “break easily. All the watches I’ve had from JLC have had issues which could all be boiled down to their lack of robustness

So many watch enthusiasts are in love with the idea of JLC ( or whomever ) but have not had the real world disappointment of owning such a watch. Drop down a level or two and you will find many sweet spots in Omega, Rolex. Grand Seiko and other mid tier companies, whilst still maintaining wrist prestige and historical horological credibility.
At this level of top watchmaking brands earned their rankings over the years in each sub segment, and when it comes to dress watches it's always PP , VC and ALS , even AP failed historically, so Rolex should drop the dress watch segment all together as they have nothing new to add or help them stand out in the crowd of more established players.

I concur with your assessment of Rolex’s new 1908 model. In my opinion Rolex should have turned to their historical catalogue and brought back the “bubbleback.” The new “bubbleback” would incorporate modern day technologies and materials for the movement along with a streamline case. The watch does not have to be an exact copy much like IWC’s new Ingenieur is not a replica. The new Rolex “bubbleback” would be in gold (yellow, white, or pink) with a case size anywhere from 36 - 40mm (dress watches are generally not large but discrete timepieces). The watch would have the famous Mercedes hands, salmon dial (just because I always wanted a salmon dial watch….lol) with a gold beads of rice bracelet/leather strap option and now you have a watch with a pedigree of historical value.
Good idea with the bubble back. There's something that would actually resonate with collectors

The 1908 has refined understated elegance and a legible attractive design. I like it over the other dress watches presented here. The only thing i don't like, is the high price (typical Rolex). Though I would like to see more 1908 colour choices... (Perhaps in their future 1908 releases?)

I think it just needs a few tweaks. Sure, if Rolex wanted to make a real heritage dress watch, they'd make a revival of the first Oyster Prince. A small cushion case...
But they can make it with this one too. They just could do away with the overabundance of text and make the indexes smaller.
Or if we wanted to go even more extreme, ditch the inspiration from the professional line altogether and focus on the basic OP: Just batons, simple hands, *maybe* coronet on top.

In steel I might consider it. Then again. Nomos Orion does all a dress watch needs to do for me....

What a refreshing channel! I wish someone would do a summary of how Rolex senses, then acts on the newest trends in the market. Case in point, when the market went to bigger is better, out came the maxi case. When the market went vintage, out came a revamped Cellini line and the Cellini moonphase (as vintage as Rolex gets). In 2019 Richard Mille came out with colorful candy watche Ls (that all sold out within minutes). In 2020 Rolex came out with colorful Oyster Perpetual watches. Now the market has moved to dress watches and they pivot by releasing a “new” dress watch. By following the macro trends you will see that Rolex is right there in the mix every time.
This is one step in the right direction for Rolex in the Haute Horology field. Yes, the price point is too high and the dial script is too much but just wait. They will adjust their fire. They never position themselves as the cheapest in the market. So the price point isn’t or shouldn’t be surprising. They need to determine what their niche is within this crowded field before they can exploit it. To expect them to be “like” Patek or “like” Lange is off the mark. They want to re-define this genre. Rolexify and it (I just coined that phrase)! James Bond should have worn a “rugged” dress watch with his tuxedo. Now he can.
I think you're right about Rolex - Adrian Barker said to "It's not for me, but I'm interested to see where they take it from here" - much like your sentiment, it's basically a starting point for Rolex to refine and improve from. They have a pretty good track record after all.

True on the price. However, I think they're targeting the same buyers and in this price range where somebody is willing to put this kind of cash on a "non-hype" type watch, price is less of a consideration for them.

It looks far better than Cellini, I will give it that. I would actually buy it if it were in steel. I have a 40mm Jaeger Master Control Date that looks somewhat similar, and this looks better. Design wise I really am not seeing anything wrong with it at all. I hope it sells horribly so I can pick one up at half price in a year.

1. I do like the sapphire display caseback. Everyone else has has display casebacks for 10,000 years and Rolex finally joined the party. This is the most significant improvement over the Cellini line.
1b. Rolex finally decorates a movement! Mind you they don’t do a very good job; The ‘côtes de genèric’ machine stripes are applied by the finest in blind robots and the gold rotor is brushed with a wire wheel. This is still a huge upgrade from, say, Rolex’s 1570 movement which topped-out at gold filled stamped lettering. This was less decoration than you got with a Seiko movement. Not a ‘Grand Seiko’, a regular Seiko. So good on Rolex. A real step up in quality.
2. Comparing Rolex with Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, A Lange & Söhne, or Jaeger LeCoutre is disingenuous. Rolex is not Haute Horlogerie. They may want the recognition but they will never put in the work. Circle back to the all-robot finished movement or the fact Rolex still can’t figure-out how a tourbillion works, or build a functioning perpetual calendar. If you want to compare Rolex to other companies compare it to its middle-shelf contemporaries: Omega, Longines, Grand Seiko, or Cartier.
3. Do Rolex buyers really need a formal dress watch? I know they’re playing to a global market but the ‘Rolex fanboys’ that are filming Tik Toks of themselves autistically clicking their bezels have probably never seen a white-tie ensemble let alone own one.
4. Good on Rolex for offering a yellow gold black dial combo. It’s classic and will look good 500 years from now long after the Red/Pink/Rose golds have gone out of style
I'm new and extremely "green" when it comes to watches...if you said it my apologies but I didn't catch the price on the other 2 brands....the 1908 is about 22/23 grand
The others are actually quite a bit more expensive. Some are over 30k. My thinking though is that at that price range, people buying a dress watch are a little bit indifferent to that price difference. They'll choose the one they like and their bank account won't sink noticeably either way.

What a well-considered overview. I think the 1908 is absolutely magnificent. I'd love one now, and in fifty years time it'll be a sought-after classic. But.............. here we go............... I much prefer the caché and looks of the Calatrava. In fact, having looked at all the pretenders, I plumped for a Breguet 5707, which makes all the others look cheap. Agreed, the model I wanted was twice the retail price of the Rolex, but used (never worn) dropped the price by 50%. And it knocks spots off the Rolex. Although they are great watches, on the whole Gentlemen don't wear the more obvious Rolex models, unless a grandpa hand-me-down. In a board room, Rolex can say, arriviste.

The two most beautiful dress watches, which to me are the best looking watches regardless of style, are the Credor Eichi ll and the Kikuchi Nakagawa Murakumo.

I have learned so much from you, given that 7 months ago I knew nothing about watches and now I'm able to think in terms of positioning on the market and chances of success in a certain category - that is quite a long way in terms of obtained knowledge and understanding of a hobby. In the long term Rolex could try to go into making grand complications as a from of flagship selling just to try and take on the appearance of haut horology.
I like many of Rolex’s watches. I’m seeking a dress watch. The Patek Calatrava and the Lange are in a different league. I think the Chopard LUC 1860 is prettier than this watch and less expensive in yellow gold. It’s a little surprising that Rolex could not do better.

Frankly, someone who is able to afford 22k for a dress watch, probably could add another 10 and get the 6119; I'd opt for a vintage like the 1491 or 2526.
Funny how we all have different perspectives. I loathe the fluting on Rolex. It's like the 1980's are calling and want their bezel back. Reducing the size of the fluting greatly increases it's aethetic appeal to me. It's more refined and less in your face "chav". I like the 1908 but still prefer the moonface Cellini. Not that I can afford either, so it's a moot point :)

I know 3 + 1 people who have cellinis, my dad, my father in law, a close friend of mine, and the +1 President Obama
I think personally, the fact that Rolex put its crown on the watch will always keep it classy (and very different from your typical Rolex)

Rolex will always sell - Agree. Anything with a Rolex logo will sell, but this model like you indicate is a work in progress and we have to see if it will turn into something really good.

I think Rolex is inspired by Breguet Classique. Hands, crown, seconds, metal, window and price is the same.
I see what you mean. The brequet (and urban Jurgensen) to me come across as more thin and sharp where the relative thickness of the hands on the 1908 reveal the Mercedes hand heritage, but hollowing out the merc' circle does leave you with a resemblance for sure 👍
As a Rolex President owner, I was extremely disappointed in the trash from Rolex. Even Timex would have been ashamed of the emoji wheels! At least the 1908 offers some potential.
The JLC Ultrathin is also half the price at least the stainless one you showed. The gold ones are still cheaper then the 1908. Once you get up to the price of the 1908 you've got gold and generally a moon complication to go with for the same price. Mostly you can buy a JLC where you can't buy a Rolex.

I don’t agree - if you compare this to Glashutte original and jlc this is a nice watch. Why would you compare this to watches that cost 1/3 more ? They are not only not in the same segment but they are also not a daily wearer like this Rolex. Plus you get a Buckl. And the dial is very beautiful. It’s a nice cheaper alternative two Patek and Lange. And to be honest.
If they want to go full on dress watch game, they need to show that they are producing complications like the perpetual calendar, rattrapante, flyback or minute repeater to really have the edge in this segment. I’d rather go for complicated IWC portugieser like the perpetual calendar or rattrapante or JLC and have a Maison on your wrist.
More complications from Rolex would for sure be cool. I have a hard time seeing it happening throughout the line, but a moonphase here of there would be cool as a start.
Cool you mentioned the portugieser - IWC have some seriously good complicated watches. My personal fave is the moon and tide yacht club portugieser on gold. That's a stunner of a piece. !!!!

This watch should be no more than $10 -$12k. I don’t think Rolex puts much precious metals in their watches. Lots of hype and very pretty. However, today, even watches in the $1k range look as good. Do you really get your moneys worth? I think not.

Avoid the 1908. If you need to scratch the Rolex itch, then buy an Explorer and 5 ounces of gold bullion. Then you get a no frills dressy sports watch with the Mercedes symbol included on your hour hand and real 24kt gold you can feel proud owning rather than manufactured 18kt jewelry grade gold. It's a win win situation. Otherwise search Chrono24 for a vintage Precision Rolex dress watch for $5k. Makes no sense to spend $20k on this dress watch with no performance history. You could take your pick in the Rolex catalogue, including all Subs, most GMTs and at least a two tone Daytona. And still have money leftover to buy two ounces of gold bullion

So Lange emphasizes its exquisite (hand) craftsmanship, Rolex its advanced and precise engineering and manufacturing...and Patek basically says that they are Patek, they make a watch and you should buy it...because it is Patek-enough said. Oh, but once you have been convinced that you want to buy a Patek...you will have to hand over your first born son and wait on your knees for 3 days in silent supplication for the possibility of maybe being able to hand over tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege.
For dressing watches. Which the same price range I would go for VC traditionella is better so far, less money I would go for JLC and If I have more money, Lange is my grail watch.

This “dress watches are simple” dogma is derived from cheap Charlie’s that want a prestige brand watch, but can’t afford the stratospheric price tag of a complication from that high prestige brand. I’d take an interesting complication from a more mundane brand before I’d take a Patek Calatrava that doesn’t even have a date or hacking seconds. Maybe that makes me a peasant, but so be it. I think the reverse would make me out to be a logo maniac (a fool led by the nose by advertising). I’m not impressed by this 1908, it’s a Cellini with a new name.
Interesting take. No doubt, the simple models do make the high end relatively more accessible. Personally I'm a fan of the Frederique Constant worldtimer for the very same reason you describe. Not perfect, but pretty damn good.

What makes you believe in The concept of a dress watch? Like you’ve jsut made up a concept and built a whole castle on it … firstly there are no sport watches or dress watches … there is no law in any country … all complications come from people that would wear the most expensive dresses back in the days when pocket watches started to appear …. But these weren’t sport watches … or dress watches … so unless it’s not a meta strap it’s already a dress watch … and even today watches on nelon nato and metal straps can be worth in a suit … why not … it’s not like you are only wearing a suit on a wedding only … you never wear a suit just to feel good on a date ? So same with watches … these lange Saxonia you’ve talked about they are not a dress watch … it’s jsut a watch. This is how a watch could look like .. nothing makes it a dress watch
