  • TAILWHEEL SHIMMY !! -- Tips for Adjusting an Aviat Husky Tail Wheel for Shimmy .. Correct it NOW! Don't allow a shimmy to ruin your day. My Techniques for having a properly Rigged Tailwheel for Bush airplanes, like a Cubs, Carbon Cub, Maule, Cessna, but especially on an Aviat Husky tail wheel, so you can land without fear on those airplanes with a loose Tail Wheel.
Nothing better than a smooth Properly Rigged Tail wheel.. Nothing worse than flying a loose or sloppy Tail Wheel that has shimmy...It should break at the stops, like this, not be sloppy.. A loose tailwheel can contribute to serious handling problems, Safety Issues, and a High Potential for Ground Loop.
I use 45 Lb of air for the Husky tail wheel. The Adjustment nut is in the lower fork. Tighten the axle until its restricted a little like you see, then back off approx 1/2 - 1 turn.. keeps the bushings seated but not stressed. Grease pivot every 20 or so landings, grease axle 1-2 squirts same.. Don't over grease axle or it will pop out the bushings. Enjoy a long tailwheel Life.. Carry a spare tube or tube/tire.
The aircraft is my 2015 Aviat Husky nicknamed "Lemondrop" but I usually just say "Yellow Husky" on the radio.. I shoot all flying video in 4K with Go Pro Hero 7/8 cameras using Strap Metal mounts. This video has digital scans and zooms on 3 or more angles, with more view angles to come!
This Video was taken at the Husky Skunkworks, where we work on Aviat Husky related work on aircraft for our friends.
Always Consult your CFI, and A&P/AI..

Very useful explanation! I just build aircraft models for Flight Simulation for 20 years.... This kind of explanation are gold for me, I uses that to get a picture about how to build several aircraft mechamism and the way it works. Right now I´m working on a C180 tailwheel performance, that is a bit different but still the explanation works for me... Tank you!

Thanks for the details. I am building an Aviat Husky clone. Made the rudder a little larger than the factory and did not have the horn bars on the bottom for the tail wheel. Nice to be able to see them.

Awesome! Flying TW is the best.. We will be posting more videos about TW flying and other aspects like short field and formation.. Good Luck in your training.. See you out there! Goose.
