Amundsen 540D off road camper van review

- Westfalia introduced the Amundsen 540D off road camper van at Caravan Salon 2017 in Dusseldorf. Westfalia is not the first name that comes to mind when one thinks off road although it has been producing four wheel drive for a number of years, based on both the Fiat Ducato chassis or the VW T6 as those that have attended the Abenteuer Allrad, Germany's largest off-road exhibition in Bad Kissingen, will know..
With the new off-road package, the company is now going one step further. Fully equipped, the Amundsen 540D - for which the package is offered exclusively - has not only the all-wheel drive of the French specialist Dangel, but also a differential locked rear axle and a chassis lift. The "All Terrain" tires from Goodrich are mounted on 18-inch special rims, and four headlights and two other headlamps on the front bracket ensure the correct illumination.
The carrier systems originate from the transport specialist Thule. On the roof, a roof rack is mounted, which can be equipped alternatively with a kayak rack or ski rack. The large Canyon XT roof basket is also standard part of the package as the 9-step ladder and the black bicycle rear carrier.
The total price of the off-road package is 23,150 euros.

I love these adventure vans. Please video more of them when you come across them. I think sub 6m is great.
put a slide out shower off the back. It stays out to dry even down the road. Saves room and comfort inside and versatile to take complete outdoor showers at times.
A splendid van, Alan! I'd prefer a 6.0m-6.4m version with a fixed lengthways bed at the back, but minimal is good for me.

I took the base price of 43,000 euro and selected a heap of options off their catalogue and its easy to get over 80,000 euro all up!! So the base price alone is deceiving - like a one way airline fare, when you need a return ticket!!

Toilet could be slide on the side, could have two double or even two single bank beds at the back, easily would sleep 6 persons. I can admit fridge placement is clever design

If you are having problem getting the netting for shower plughole you might consider getting one 3D printed.

They're not plugs in the shower base, they're wastes. A plug is something inserted into the waste, in order to prevent the water emptying from the appliance.

I don't know any Joe. The only 4x4 Citroen campers that I know of are on the six metre van. However that does not mean they don't exist, just that none come to mind.

Dude you did not read the right price of that vehicle. You told the start price. The price for this vehicle as it is shown, is written on the right sight at the bottom of the list and shows more than 79.000€. I got an offer for this car from my westfalia trader for 78.599€. And this colour is not painted! Its wrapped in foil.

Do these exist? I’ve been trying to find somewhere to order one, but westfalia don’t have it on their site, and all I can find is other people talking about how great it looks, but no one that’s actually got one.

Nah they don’t offer them anymore as Fiat doesn’t do the 4x4 any longer from factory. Something with the Euro6 norms I believe. Such a shame cause this is a cool van. Though it was underpowered.
This one do not cost 43.000 € the price is 73.000 € and it is not painted it is a foil !
I am sure you know better than the manufacturers what the price is. As can be seen in the film, I am reading directly from their own description.
It looks like you do not know how to read. "grundpreise " means the basic or starting price.It even writes the color, White.
43k is the base price for FIAT Ducato, no camping equipment no leather no nothing, just plain lorry. 73k sounds reasonable.
It seems you don't know how to read a price list on a van. All van prices are given as from with extras on top.
Alan Heath: well mate, you are here the one who fails at reading the price list on van. If you have a look at the price list in this video, there is clearly written Grundpreis, which means basic price excluding all the extras. I guess the total price (Gesamtpreis) is in low right/left corner which you dont see in the video, as most German price list do have. In the body of the price list all the extras are listed, these are NOT included in Grundpreis.

You will find one 2017 Amundsen 540D which price is 56.240€!!! And if you inspect it you will find out it is a much lower trim then the van in video. Just the Leather Seats option is 2.900€!!! Not to mention the "adventure" equipment.
So good luck in getting that van for 42.990,-€ mate.

Nice review Alan. Do you know where I can find info on how it is built with respect to using it in winter? Heated and/or insulated holding tanks? Interior routed water lines? Heat blown water lines? Exposed or not exposed dump station? The heating source? Insulation of the unit? Are they yet available in the US? Thank you!
You can get all that in the new James Cook but it will cost a fortune! I don't know if it is available in the US!

Respect your opinion so how do you see this camper holding up to extensive off-grid camping (with some upgrades of course such as solar power and increased water supply)?
I think anything will work with off grid provided that it is prepared correctly - which means solar!
Thanks for the reply. I suppose what I am asking is this vehicle more form than function? As an American living in Europe i see the Ducato in use as a delivery vehicle but is this Dangel 4x4 or all wheel drive system reliable or is this van just a sheep in wolf's clothing? Obviously there are no real road test reviews otherwise I would rely on those.
Having viewed one its flipping great - as long as you don't actually want to live in it. The interior is totally useless. Totally. As for practicalities such as big water tanks there just isn't any space whatsoever. Theres a similar style van at our local RV agency. 3 owners in 12k miles... that tells the story
is there any van offered by any company that has a useful interior (e.g. not blocking the side entrance with a kitchen, and offering a higher bed for more storage and water tanks?)

EU 72,000? For another 6 I could get a basic Hymercar MB Sprinter Allrad that is not a cobbled together unit with less fluff, plus it seems like Dangel only offers this with 96 kw and no automatic. Cleverly packaged but no value here.
Base price is EUR43k - although with a few extras it might start getting towards EUR72!

This is 4x4 but normally front wheel drive!
Fiat has no 4x4 vans.
A couple of them were made for a car show but never reached production.
Full wheel drive was done by Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

Then get your money out. The price of any van depends on the equipment that has been added and clearly the price is the starting price. If you want extras then pay for them. I suspect Westfalia knew what they were doing before advertising a price at a trade event.
