    "Shall I show you the same mercy you showed the rest of the circle then? You blithely murdered them to restore their pillars, yet your hand faltered when it came to the final sacrifice, what makes you exempt Kain? You're merely the last man standing. Why condemn me for simply carrying out what you hadn't the courage to do yourself?"
    "Let's drop the moral posturing, shall we? We both know there's no altruism in this pursuit, your reckless indignation led you here, I counted on it! There's no shame in it Raziel, revenge is motivation enough, at least it's honest. Hate me, but do it honestly!"

    Reasons Kain is the greatest vampire of all time.
    1. He's well developed with a very long and interesting story.
    2. He's complex. He can be considered a brave hearted hero one minute and a cold blooded villain the next.
    3. He doesn't fucking sparkle!!!!!

      The retcons are an unfortunate side effect of making time travel a central theme of the series. It tends to screw things up. Most of Kain's development was off camera since the series was never finished, which is an absolute tragedy in my opinion. However, we can speculate on that development based on how Kain was portrayed in each game.
      In the Blood Omen games, Kain was indeed a petty and selfish man who cared only for his own gain. However, in the events of Soul Reaver, it is clear that in the centuries since his empire arose, Kain's moral compass had taken a drastic shift. His sole mission throughout Soul Reaver 1, 2, and Defiance was to restore the pillars and save Nosgoth.

      I really loved the story and the visuals in this one, but I remember it was very linear compared to the first. Plus the camera in SR2 must burn in hell for all eternity and I think it got even worse in Defiance.

    of 18 years of gaming, i still haven't found one series with such an epic story.

    • @fkabici967
      @fkabici967 Před 8 lety +7

      +Reawer actually we desperately need a new game, but Dead Sun was a total disgrace : even the producers weren't the same, Amy was gone, some voice actors are dead, so the likelihood of a new game is really grim. Still, even just publishing the continuation of the story would be enough :P

    • @xanatos8920
      @xanatos8920 Před 8 lety +6

      +Antichrist2000 Actually, the developers of Dead Sun disliked the series. As for the Saradin (as the new vampires were called), they were desperate to keep banking on Raziel's popularity as a character.
      The sad part is there are some good ideas in Dead Sun, at least three proper LoK tales they could have told...But they disregarded any of the continuity. Even the vampires being soul eaters could have worked within continuity. As-is, it was a cheap rehash of Raziel.

    • @Dave-jl3us
      @Dave-jl3us Před 8 lety +1

      wtf do you mean about milking franchises? It's been more than 10 years since we haven't got a new LOK game and you're saying stupid shit like that? Damn stop throwing shit. The idea of Dead Sun was good, but as Xanatos said, it was just a recycling of Raziel. We need the LOK universe alive again with a great story as it's been since the 90's. I don't give a fuck if they "milk" the franchise, fine by me! Hey, I fucking love the Halo Universe, and as long as I have another 10 or 15 years of story and its universe keeps growing, I'm good to go :)

    • @xanatos8920
      @xanatos8920 Před 8 lety +4

      Serv Asat
      Actually, LoK was going into the early 2000s. And a fair bit of new Dead Sun material's been uncovered since my last comment here. Seems they actually had some really great gameplay and world concepts but Square Enix was all "DISTANCE FROM CONTINUITY, MORE HAND-HOLDING TUTORIALS, MAKE IT A GAME FOR IDIOTS!"...All of that on top of they gave it to a small, under-budgeted studio to boot. No wonder it failed.
      As for "milking", there's really so much material in the LoK world, you'd get another decade of games out of it before it became 'milking'. And a bunch of fans in a Facebook group (remains of Nosgoth's playerbase) had a really solid idea to expand the story potential: Since Kain spends so much time in the Chronoplast, just sifting through possible timelines, we could even get stories that spin off in wild new directions without breaking continuity. Just frame them as 'possibilities' Kain is viewing in the time chamber.
      The concept originated from talks of how to fit Dead Sun into proper continuity: The general consensus was that Dead Sun largely works as a what-if moment for the second paradox when Raziel has a chance to kill Kain in SR2 but chooses not to, exercising his first 'free will'. Basically, Dead Sun is what *would* have happened had he gone ahead and killed Kain.
      Even the Saradin (Dead Sun's soul-eating new vampires) could have fit into a decent tale. Say Kain raises a new bunch of vampires but gets cast away someplace, then the Elder God swoops in and sways his new kids into cult status like Janos Audron's people used to be. Gives a better context for why they'd be soul-reaving if they were serving the Elder.
      Sadly, for the foreseeable future, unless we spread awareness of the series far and wide, we only have fan projects to look forward to - though admittedly, all very good ones.

Truly fascinating story line and way ahead for its time. This game will always be one of my most favorite games ever.

      I agree it needs a fresh face and modernized gameplay. I'm thinking something like the Arkham games. Nice looking with crazy fun combat. I don't understand why so many fans are against a remake? There have been remakes that have done very very well. Besides, with a series as beloved as LoK, the team that takes up the torch will know that they have to deliver. The hardest part IMO would be finding voice actors that match up.

    • @jonp1952
      @jonp1952 Před 7 lety +3

      Honestly a remake could have a lot of pluses. They could still use the old voice acting and I wouldn't care one bit(I'd probably actually prefer it unless they get the originals, or similar voice actors, which I think the Dead Sun content out there had someone who sounded similar to Raziel in it somewhere). Imagine the fluidity of Dead Sun's spectral realm changing, a lot better camera action, better combat. Soul Reaver 1's gameplay was actually pretty terrible tbh(you could try for 15 seconds trying to get through walls in the spectral realm and the combat was wasn't immersive at all, not to mention was pretty terrible). Soul Reaver 2 got better but still had some problems of it's own and could still be improved. I can barely bring myself to play Blood Omen, Blood Omen 2 could use some touching up and I haven't played Defiance in a while but while I consider it the most perfect of the LoK series, even it I'm sure could use some touch-ups.

      Why not continue the story overall? There were many questions unanswered in the end of Defiance. Same base mechanics, same characters, same voice actors if possible (major part of LoK games) and new graphics,controls etc. Square Enix doesn't care because they know it won't sell well. Gaming industry is all about profit nowadays, they don't care about actually making great games. And lets face it, LoK games have a very small fanbase, even back then, we were very few to truly apreciate the series

      First the god-ridden and righteous Vampire race, in their war witht he Hylden, then, when Vampires, afflicted with bloodlust and immortaility and no longer of use to the Elder God, are cast aside, along comes humanity, the next willing food source that the Elder God molds into fanatical servents of his insatiable desire for souls.
      Both are reflections of one another, because of the being they follow. Neither are their own masters. Ironically, in many ways, it's the demonic and twisted Hylden, who are the wronged party. The ruin heaped upon both Vampire and human alike, merely feeds the Elder Gods hunger and desire for worship and control.

    It's really screwed up but also kind of genius on Mobius and Elder Gods part. How do you stop a creature that is super strong and powerful. Has an indestructible soul and can always come back to life? You dont kill him. you dont have too. You just come up with a way, a trap to contain that creature. Even better, make it the creature that is destined to save your worst enemy. Using manipulation and time travel they subvert the destiny of the the most powerful being in nosgoth the one who is destined to be Kains greatest ally and right hand and instead make him Kains assassin then create a time loop to ensure he is ALWAYS imprisoned and cannot escape this altered fate. Its friggin evil and brilliant

      Nowadays there's too many big companies that outshine any other small company. And they are too greedy... DLC, multiplayer only, money for vanity items, expansion packs... money drives the world. A simple game like soul reaver 2 does not make tons of money. And that's why companies will not make games like soul reaver 2... just no money in it by being honest.

    May I add my two cents to the discussion surrounding Janos's knowledge of raziel, Raziel nature, his soul eating and all that...
    Raziel is the redeemer and destroyer. As is discovered in Defiance, Raziel is bound by at least two contradicting prophecies - one as a champion of vampires, two as a champion of the hylden. In Defiance, Raziel fullfills both prophecies, by becoming the instrument of balance and unlocking the cage of the Hylden. I am not sure, that the demons and the hylden are of the same stock. It is said that dark forces are allied against raziel and kain, that implies multiple foes although it could be just the Sarafan and the Hylden, it could also mean the Elder god for example who is on his own side and the demons could be servants of only EG or multiple sides or they could be the hylden themselves, though that doesn't seem to be the case, jduging from the murals.
    His soul devouring power seems to come from the elder god, but his indestructibility is probably just due to prophecy, the elder god seeing as Raziel was the one unbound pebble in the pyramid sought to manipulate him, since he could not destroy him. It also seems, that Kain throwing him into the abyss was calculated from the beginning by Kain or it was part of the vampire prophecy, that Kain fulfilled in hopes of salvation.
    The game's story fundamentally stands on one notion and that is that the flow of time, fate and history is at the same time ever changing but also immutable. And that in the end it does not really matter. It is the paradox of self fulfilling prophecy.

    • @xanatos8920
      @xanatos8920 Před 8 lety +3

      +Antichrist2000 Not quite. Kain is still bound by fate. The reason his survival is unpredicted remains unconfirmed but is simple enough:
      Moebius is no longer the Time Guardian. When Kain beheads him in Blood Omen and restores the Pillar of Time, that returns the pillar's magic. When the Elder God revives Moebius at the Vampire Citadel (just after his original death in Blood Omen, because time travel, he has *ceased* to be the Guardian. He has no omniscience then, which is why his use is done and the Elder simply devours him.
      Notice, every other time we meet Moebius is prior to the Blood Omen era, when he is yet to be purged by Kain. (The one exception is Moebius' "ghost" in SR2, which is only an illusion orchestrated from a pre-BO time period.)

    • @xanatos8920
      @xanatos8920 Před 8 lety +4

      ***** You misunderstand. Moebius *is* the Time Guardian during Blood Omen. But then Kain kills him after their battle and restores Moebius' hourglass (the token of his Guardian magic) to the Pillar of Time. Right? Right.
      So Moebius ceases to be the Time Guardian.
      When revived at Defiance's end (just before Kain kills him again and Raziel reaves his soul), he is being revived *after his death in Blood Omen*. So he is no longer the Time Guardian at that point, and thus has no omniscience to see Kain's survival. While fledgling Kain is heading to the Pillars to confront Mortanius in Blood Omen, elder Kain is running Moebius through with the blood reaver in Defiance.
      Now, Raziel's hand in the whole affair could have shrouded Kain's survival as well. Or Kain's awakening in the demon dimension if a Time Guardian's magic cannot see through dimensions. But these explanations, while possible, are superfluous. Moebius could not see Kain's survival in Defiance because he was not the Time Guardian anymore.

    Mortanius/Lovecraftian Elder God voiced by the same person that may or may not BE Mortanius I can't remember is like the greatest villain of all time. Raziel and Kain are both such Magnificent Bastards. It is great seeing Raziel taking Kain to task for being arrogant, narrow-minded, self-important, and jealous when Raziel is, in his own way, all of those things himself. Legacy of Kain is the greatest Vampire time travel story of all time, and not just because it's the only one (that I know of)!
    "Hate me, but do it HONESTLY." is one of the greatest lines ever written IN ANYTHING. In a series overflowing with awesome Shakespearian dialogue voiced by classically trained Shakespearian actors, this still stands out to me. The writing here is almost on the level of David Milch's Deadwood, just with rather a lot less swearing. Even the janky AF CG from the original game is brilliantly written, and not just the dialogue, even the fight scenes. In Malek v. Vorador round 1, Vorador vanishes and appears behind Malek to clout him with the pommel of his sword, in the rematch, Malek v. Vorador round 2, Vorador tries the same exact move and Malek anticipates it and backhands him in the face. This is good writing just as much as all of the high-minded dialogue.
    Simon Templeman is a straight up king; Amy Hennig is a fucking QUEEN. GOD I wish I could sit down for her for an hour, or two, or five and interview her, pick her brain on the staggeringly impressive Magnum Opus that is the Legacy of Kain. (The Uncharted series is great too but it's aided by quantum leaps in video game technology made between it and AoK, but still it pales in comparison to this earnest work in the epic mode.
