      The better way to go about it is to just not pick borderline cards in the first place. If a card was amazing 10-15 years ago, but hasn't been remotely good for the past dozen formats, or if it's an important card for whatever lower-tier/rogue decks can run it at all, then there isn't a clear answer either way and so doesn't belong on the show.

    • @Metallicity
      @Metallicity Před rokem +13

      The fun part is that the answer is hard to get for the contestant, who knows little to nothing about the game, but obvious to anyone who plays the game. If there is no "right" answer in the first place, that most any player would readily agree with, then the contestant didn't cleverly figure it out or comically misunderstand the card, they just won/lost a coin flip against the arbitrary decision made by whoever prepared the answers.
      Some viewers might also be in the same boat as the contestant, and so can play along with them, but that only works if they know just as little about the game in question. That's its own sort of fun, but is still a better experience if they are playing with "fair" questions.

      I somewhat expected there to be a card that hit everybody for 10k damage. Being unable to die to damage even for a moment would be a win condition in a bunch of different card games. Using it for value is a foolish idea but I was expecting something dealing arbitrary amounts of damage to everybody in one of these books you call cards.
      PS1: I know that a two card win condition is not as unusual in Yu Gi Oh compared to other games and the trap not being in any tribe makes it rough to find but I did not expect it to be entirely dead.
      PS2: What happened to flip effects? In my day the Fossil would have been templated as a flip.

      Dyna isn't good by itself, it's only good with support as it's low stats for a normal summon means that any deck with a 1300 normal summon can just clear this thing unless you can increase it's stats or give it protection or cover it with powerful trap cards.
      Also if it's face-down, it's probably being removed before the battle phase, making that part of the card straight cope at most.
      And this cards does literally nothing against Floowandereeze and dies to any spell/trap based removal. Which makes it not a staple, because the card isn't good by itself

      enemy controller is good but not good enough, you go -1 to steal soemthing but more often then not its not even something you can make use of and even in the argument of using it for a link summon; you could’ve just use the monster you tribute for enemy controller for the link summon instead
      the best case scenario is to either use it in a final game winning push to remove the opponent’s crucial line of defense but at that point you already winning making it just a “win-more” card or to deprive the opponent of an immediate resource on their turn but they’ll just get it back in the end unless you have something that can utilize it in a way to remove it from the field
      even the battle position shift is also a niche effect because the opponent can still use the monster’s effects or as material to summon something else so most of the time if youre using such an effect you probably in a losing situation and only delaying the inevitable

    Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo can actually be easily searched with Gallant Granite. With modern archetypes that don't rely on Normal Summons, it's not hard to build your board, search Fossil Dyna, and normal summon it. This makes a really good floodgate because most board breakers need to out-resource their opponents' negates by using their combos. If they have to get over Fossil Dyna first (like Normal Summoning a beat stick and attacking it, it foils their play and they might not survive the next turn. Fossil Dyna is not a stinker.

    For example, Fossil Dyna is being currently used to smash through Master Duel's current ladder, whereas in the TCG, it hasn't seen play in a good while.
    In the case of Enemy Controller, the use cases should be defined on how it can be superior to Change of Heart (such as tributing a problematic card that was given to you).
    And Appointer should have some context around it such as the usual turn count for games or example situations like setting up an unbreakable board and promptly removing said board breakers.

      Fossil Dyna is very good in a BO1 format such as Master Duel because it becomes very much you have to draw the out to it, as well as the out to the backrow the opponent likely has to support it.
      Enemy controller is just immense as you can use it to tribute monsters to dodge targeting effects such as veiler/imperm while getting your opponents monster back in return as well as remove locking cards such as Iblee/Gimmick Puppet from your side of the field.

    For Relay Soul I was hoping Crim would bring up something like Demonic Pact in Magic. Demonic Pact lets you do 1 of 4 things andyou can choose each option only once. 3 of them are good and the 4th is "You lose the game". There's a strategy where you do the 3 good ones and then give your opponent the demonic pact so they have to choose to lose the game.
    As a non-YGO player who came here for Crim, I was hoping that there might be a way to give your opponent your creature you special summoned from Relay Soul and then kill it, winning you the duel.

    • @Felixr2
      @Felixr2 Před rokem

      I don't think that would even work, even when applying MTG rules logic. It doesn't give the 'when this monster leaves play, your opponent wins the duel' effect to the monster, it's created as a separate entity. Because this effect was *created* by an effect you activated, the 'you' will always refer to you, even if you no longer control the monster the effect refers to.

    • @kobisjeruk
      @kobisjeruk Před rokem

      To make it work using MtG logic, you would have to 'donate' Relay Soul to your opponent instead of the monster. Why? Because the effect is not appended to said monster but rather a static effect created by Relay Soul itself. However, while I dont have much knowledge about ygo, I do know that some spells and traps stick on board after they activated but I dont think Relay Soul is one of them. Then in that case you need something that steal/swap spell controller as it was cast i.e. Perplexing Chimera -ish card which I dont think exist in ygo.

If the monster summoned by Relay Soul is used as Xyz Material, it isn't counted as leaving the field, so the effect of allowing the opponent to win upon leaving the field can't be applied. Nibiru is also another Staple card you would main deck but when it falls out of favor you would side deck it. When tech cards fall out of favor people don't even side it. Fossil Dyna isn't a staple either, but I wouldn't call it a 'stinker' either, it's a stun card, so if it suddenly shows up, it's very anti-meta and can steal games away. Again I would consider it niche. As strong as Appointer is, it's not as strong as people seem to think, it's only worthy of a side deck or MAYBE a deck that knows it's going first. Calling the card 'so good it's banned' is misleading, the card is banned because of new support (Look up Trap Track) that would make it so consistent that it's broken. In a vacuum Appointer is mediocre, and when it was at 3, and at 1, it was an annoyance, but not that strong.

    Also, I'm pretty sure the first effect wouldn't activate if flipped during the damage step, because it is not a FLIP effect proper, but damage step rulings are a mess so maybe I'm wrong.
    The second effect makes Fossil Dyna a staple in any dedicated stun strategy, so I think he actually got every cards right.

    I’ve noticed that magic players (like me) read these cards like they’re reading them in pioneer, modern, or standard. When in reality, YuGiOh is essentially strictly vintage and every deck and their staples are geared towards winning as quickly and efficiently as possible. Which, I might add, is also true for the above mentioned formats in MTG. HOWEVER, YuGiOh doesn’t rotate, and doesn’t require mana. I.e. these cards need to be read as though we were analyzing cards through the lens of vintage/legacy. YuGiOh decks are simply a collection of the best, most efficient, and (possibly) flexible possible cards EVER printed for whatever strategy that deck may be going for. Now, of course, I don’t play YuGiOh so take this with a grain of salt, but using this thought process to analyze any given YuGiOh card has worked for me personally.
