  • Deborah is in prison for being the driver in a car accident that killed two people. She has four children from ages 10 to 26 who are living without her while she serves her time. Meet Deborah and her oldest daughter, Takia, who is working to maintain a relationship with her mother and provide a better life for her own kids.
From petty drug dealers to second-degree murderers, these women all have one thing in common: they're mothers. Moms Behind Bars takes you behind the barbed wire to meet incarcerated and recently-released moms, exploring how these women struggle to maintain relationships with their children from behind prison walls. These tales of suffering, regret and redemption range from a 28-year-old mother who is raising her baby in a prison cell, to a grandmother whose grown children are fighting for a better way of life for their kids.

I’m soo sorry to hear that! I found my mother deceased when I just turned 23yrs old, I came from broken home, and had to find my way 15yrs old and up, no guidance, no family holidays, for years, until we made amends 6months prior to her death, In order to survive I worked a lot , but I was burning myself out, not enough to afford my apt & my car, so I sold drugs to get bye- and that caught up w/ me- I was sentenced 3mns after my mother’s death. In jail I had to find healing, however I will tell you this, it’s not a day that goes bye while I was locked up I did not think of my family, my mother- it is such a helpless feeling knowing there’s nothing can do. I was young than, but my time with all types of women, in jail- that had kids, grandchildren- the disease of drugs, facilitated, it’s a battle many women suffer, or stress themselves worrying abt their kids, not being in presence. It’s hard I could only imagine for you, but no matter what reason ya mom is there for- ❤️ her/ spend time or talk- take it from someone wish I had 2mins - however you ever need someone to talk too- feel free to msg /email me

My mother was incarcerated when I was 2. My first recollection of her was came from meeting her in prison when I was 8. She came home after my 15th birthday a virtual stranger to me. We never reconciled or connected after she came home. There was too much time lost and no bond at all. Till this very day I miss the mother she could have been. While she deserved her sentence I did not deserve mine. These programs are very benefical to the child of incarcerated parents.

Hope she rots? Come on....I know she did wrong, but it wasn't intentional. She didn't set out to kill people. She made a terrible mistake, but she's not a monster! You tell child predators to rot! But her? She deserves to do time, but throw the key at her and tell her to rot? No. My dad drove drunk and almost killed a woman. He spent 2 years in a restitution center. Deborah's sentence is too harsh. If she were white she'd be home! Racism is sick!

Not seeing someone coming and pulling out in front of them at an intersection is an "accident". Getting drunk and killing someone is "murder". You know the consequences of getting drunk. You know that death is a real possibility. All this, "I was drunk. I didn't know what I was doing" shit is just that. SHIT! You made the decision to get drunk , knowing full well what could happen. No sympathy from me. They have none for the victims family, they'll get none from me. She can rot in hell if there is one.

Its a sad story, but it is hard for me to feel much pity for the mother when she doesn't appear to feel remorse for causing the deaths of 2 people. She says she was in an accident, but she doesn't seem to want to admit that her choice to drive drunk cost two people their lives. What about the things those people will never get to do now? What about the families of those people? I feel most sorry for the children.

Our system needs a complete overhaul in regards to maintaining parent child relationships. Especially where fathers are concerned. The purpose of prison is first to pay a debt owed to society, but also to rehabilitate. They get services like counseling, drug and alcohol treatment, and sometimes parenting classes, but very little is done around maintaining healthy relationships. The occasional letters, phone calls, and visits don't cut it. Oftentimes the bond between parent and child is severed. It takes alot of time to fix those relationships if they can be fixed at all. My worry is mostly about men. There are more supports and services in place for women, but very few aimed at men to help prevent reoffending. I think that teaching them how to parent while also maintaining close loving bonds with their children is key. They need to have something to fight for in a system that is designed for them to fail. I think that is what we need to do in order to break the cycle. I know that prison is supposed to be a punishment and it should be. But are we punishing the parents or the children? Because I'm not talking about violent offenders and serial killers, I'm talking about those who committed lower level or white collar type crimes. I typically do not feel sympathy for people who are rightfully in prison. When I was 10 years old my mother was brutally murdered. Because of that and the trauma I still have as an adult I do not care for our current system in regards to sentencing, early releases, and privileges that inmates receive. But I do feel bad for the child of the woman who murdered my mom. He ended up going from one home to the next and now has his own violent criminal record. It is not the child's fault. We need to do more to help them understand and cope

Hi, whomever you are. I’ve spent years with Ms. Phillips incarcerated. She is extremely sorry for what has happened . She shares her story with whom ever is willing to listen so women like me don’t make the same mistake. People whom have never been incarcerated or know someone incarcerated will never understand , that we are not all bad people. This could happen to anyone. This is to whom ever is quick to judge as Jesus says in the Bible “ thou who has not sinned cast the first stone”. No one is innocent and unless you’re God then you have no right to judge my friend whom I call my sister as well.
