They are definitely a legitimate music group, not "just for fun"... though they absolutely have fun with what they do. Their covers get them the most attention because everyone loves to hear a song they already know remixed in exciting ways by talented people, but they have quite a few originals - and at least one member has writing credits on all of them.

Just to quickly answer a couple of the questions you had about Pentatonix: Most of their music goes on spotify. They are a capella 99% of the time and usually can do anything they make live. They do live concerts and do global tours almost yearly. They have a ton of original music and a ton of covers and medley type arrangements. I'm sure others answered all the big questions already.

For a good look at at live, single shot video of theirs, I’d recommend their cover of “gold”. If you are familiar with the Kiiara version, she uses a lot of effects and such to get her sound (which i’m not knocking, it’s just amazing when ana cappella group can do it and imo better). You’ll also see how effortless Mitch’s (the high male singer) singing is. You’ll also notice in their older music they have a different bass singer... one of the black men is the new bass. The old bass is a jewish gentleman with varying degrees of long hair and a beard. It’s hard to confuse the two of them but they are both insanely talented. Honestly any single song you choose to react to is worth it. They don’t put out anything less than perfection.

They do write their own songs. They work very hard to make songs that are not studio effects so they can reproduce them fairly faithfully on stage in live performances. This video does have one exception on the Cher cover for what is now known as the "Cher effect"(monkeying about with autotune) since she was the first to use it that way in her song "Believe." They did this as an homage to Cher and her producers for using the effect creatively. How does Mitch sing so high? Well, he is not from this planet. None of them are. Aliens. The lot of them. =)

Your reaction to Mitch's high part, we call it the Mitch slap ... but you haven't heard half of the high notes he can do. Yes, the one who does the low notes is Matt and the one who does the beatboxing (he can do pretty much any sound and carry a beat like no other) is Kevin (with the white jacket). You should listen to their Bohemian Rhapsody and BTW, Mitch doesn't need the megaphone .. it's a prop. You can view them on stage and you'll see that he only uses his voice. The song that they sing as a tribute to Cher, is the only part where they use something other than their voice, as you can't do that song without using auto-tune, like Cher did. Oh, and they don't do any of their videos, if they can't do the same thing on stage. Watch their official video Hallelujah and then watch them doing it live. It's the same. Amazing.

allow me to recommend the Live version of Aha! (Imogen Heap cover) for Mitch's range example. Because the man is a beast. Legit.

You should try going back and listening to some music from the 70's, 80's and 90's to get an appreciation of how music has developed over the decades. You may be surprised at some of the songs that you will find that have been remixed and released by artists other than the originals. I think you would find it entertaining at least, if not educational. I myself was born prior to 1960, so I have listened to a vast amount of music in my life and I'm always eager to listen to something or someone new.

You might want to listen to an amazing young Russian singer. Diana Ankudinova is 15 years old in this video, singing a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, giving it a more "tribal" sound. She's a contralto, even at the age of 15, and a commanding stage presence.
She is performing on the Russian TV show You Are Super, a show for disadvantaged children to display their talents that they otherwise would not be able to.
Diana (dee-ah-na) was abandoned by her abusive mother at the age 3 and placed in an orphanage, diagnosed with cognitive impairment. Her adoptive mother had her enroll in singing lessons because her speaking was severely limited due to abuse and neglect. Her singing talent was immediately noticed and the rest, as they say, is history. It's a safe prediction that you'll have goosebumps and say that's the most unique voice you've ever heard.

It is 100% Real music. They have something like 200 videos, Christmas specials, guest appearances singing on shows, have been on game shows. Starred on a motion picture and A tv show. The list goes on and on. They have even won 3 Grammie's for 3 of their songs. And, that is 100% Mitch's voice. Oh yea, and have sang with famous singer.tori Kelley, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Derulo. Also, they Do have many original songs and they are Just as incredible
