  • As the province plans to introduce alcohol sales to Ontario corner stores this summer, The Beer Store will be allowed to sell lottery tickets and other items under the new agreement.
In May, Premier Doug Ford announced that convenience stores can start sealing beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink beverages as early as Sept. 5. In doing so, The Beer Store will also be able to expand its offerings, including lottery tickets.
At the time, The Beer Store said it was looking forward to the next stage of the company’s “evolution” amid the expansion of alcohol sales in the province, a statement which a spokesperson told CTV News Toronto stands. Liquor will remain limited to LCBO locations while cannabis and tobacco products will only be available at licenced dispensaries and convenience stores, respectively.

Was looking for a reason to stop drinking beer. Standing in line waiting for morons to buy quick pics is enough reason. What a stupid idea!

Ok wait!! Not just lottery tickets but also sell food? Good way to make more government jobs and wipe out the mom and pop shops!! Twatwaffles! So poor granny me is going to have to wait in line to pay for my JD while someone picks their tickets and chooses what snack they want at the check-out?

Lower business txes for small businesses. Don't take away their business by selling more things at Government own businesses like the lcbo and beer store.

The Beer store is owned by the main brewing companies Molson, Labatt's and Sleeman. And retailers make very little on selling lottery tickets. Something like 2 or 3% per ticket so only a couple of pennies per ticket. They probably end up losing money on lottery tickets when you factor in the labour cost to print and sell them. The idea behind lottery tickets in a store is bring in more traffic- a person comes into buy a lotto ticket and ends up buying snacks etc or other items while in the store.

Do any of these changes meet any needs other than Ford's personal preferences or pandering to his populist base. Good policy be damned.

Variety stores selling lottery tickets and scratch and win tickets were helpful to me kicking cigarettes years ago. I never have cause to enter variety stores anymore. Sooo now I have to stand in line behind the pathetic time wasters to buy beer ? Please have a separate line and till for them.

Yeah, but that would actually almost make sense to do. You get both your legal intoxicants in one place.
Alcohol and gambling? Not a good mix.

Why...why is Ontario moving so fast??? Yes we are the last jurisdiction in....well the world to take alcohol sales away from government... Allowing off sight Service Ontario....taking away a government monopoly...well that is just plain crazy. I mean I agree with the Toronto mayor Chinese Chow, or Olive Chee..? Well...whatever her name is...I agree with her it's best to stay in the dark ages in Ontario ...that Doug Ford is just too modern and progressive. I like an Ontario right out of the 1870s...he's just moving too fast. Old fashioned is the way to go....why cars too. I think Toronto's plan for more bike lanes will help us to take bikes to work...well.like in China....ask Orville Chan...she knows ....millions of people taking their bikes to the roads. 3 billion Chinese can't be wrong....right?
