This dude got high af on music theory
I Eat Garbage smoke music everyday
Music is the best drug
your funny as fuck lol
The song is 4:20
You so perfectly described Jacob Collier's music to me. Just discovered him, know a few songs. But you nailed it. It's hippy dippy with a little trippy, but very nerdy, still- IN A GOOD WAY. But "dude got high af *on music theory"* is very accurate description of this dude to me lmfao
Grammy!
you are a blessing
i guess so
When are they going to make a Grammy for transcriptions for you to earn?
happy birthday
Welp
Well I'm a 51 year old man and just pulled my car over after 3:31 crescendo, tears streaming, goose bumps....Oh man....there's hope!
Yes!
YES!!!
bit over the top
@@nicke4484 Jesus Christ calm down he was just making a comment on how it was over exaggerated no need to go and get pissed over nothing
Ah yes, a pee addiction
3:57 - THIS IS the closing chord progression, what I've dreamed about and searched since my teenager years....
Now I'm in peace. (musically)
THANKS!
I know; I kept trying to figure out that progression, but never could!
@Nubiamancy take 6 rocks.
Joshua Sobel and throw them at a window
You're going to be fine
Gets me every time.... so good...
In my opinion, this is your best work. I'm an instrumentalist, and not too into vocal jazz, but the harmonies and feel on this track blow me away. I've seriously listened to this like 100 times since getting your album. I love the gospel-esque harmony and especially the small vocal runs every time you get to that sus chord
Same here! Love this arrangement so much. To get this sound he must have stacked around 20 vocals...but I read that he made the whole thing in 4 days!
OnSugarHill he won one or two Grammys for it, I think the world agrees with you on that one.
Chris Bandy or Jacob used the harmonizer :)
Nah he never uses the harmonizer for these types of things. He arranged and recorded in four days. I've heard he had around 50 to 60 overdubbed background vocals. Just goes to show how much he sinks his teeth into things as soon as he gets an idea.
Get into Take 6
He just loves the Circle of Fiths
pauloing1 pauloing1 just realized the kaleidoscope background has 12 circles like the circle of fifths!
pauloing1 pauloing1 and who else did? You know who, one of the greatest musicians to ever live.
Circle of 5th's is beautiful because it resolves. Can't hate on it or what he's doing. He's a genius because he makes it musical.
shlups Haha, of course Bach
That’s like the creation of everything ( E8) .... he just not of this world ♥️♥️♥️⭐️⭐️
It doesn’t really matter how you listen to this, but I think everyone should listen to this with decent headphones at least once. It’s an entirely surreal experience
maybe that's why I've been listening to like 6 of his songs but didn't like any of them, not even what I would call "decent". It's just that I really can't enjoy any of his song despite his "genius in music" or whatsoever
3:58 is quite possibly the best progression I've ever heard.
Not to mention how perfectly placed in the arrangement as a whole (and the narrative also) as a climax
@@tehxperience
were your teeth showing?
This song is originally by Stevie Wonder, from the album Talking Book (1972).
Jon Sebastian thanks. I wanted to know who wrote this. No wonder it sounded so familiar.
No WONDER it sounded familiar!
I see what you did there :)
No "wonder"
Jon Sebastian - Agreed and the best song Stevie ever did in my opinion. Still relevant even today 46 years later.
I think he's the next wonder of the world. Musical Genius. So inspiring. He's taking my physical pain away as I listen to much of his music.
This has to be at least 60 vocal tracks. Ridiculous discipline.
Probably like 6. It sounds like 60 because of overtones.
Or who knows, it could be 60. Jacob is incredibly tight!
Having 60 would be useless. But you are right about Jacob being tight
+GJlegends I see what you're saying, but he's talked before about how he records many takes of the same parts and pans them differently to get a wide stereo field. I'd say there are 20-30 actual layers, maybe only 6 actual notes at one time though.
Conor Quinlan Yes, that could be true.
god really out here pickin favorites huh
Sweet jesus you deserve the Grammy.
This is one of the most profoundly beautiful works of music I've heard to date. I've listened to this album hundreds of times and each time I am humbled by the incredible display of craftsmanship. Knowing all that went into the production of this album, it definitively marks itself as one of the great masterpieces of our time. The fact that Jacob composed, arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered this whole album by himself at the young age of 21 years old is simply astounding and a testament to his genius. I have no doubt that Jacob is already changing music as we know it and will grow to be a truly prolific name in history.
Obviously he didn’t compose this track that would be the brilliant Stevie Wonder but he did write this arrangement.
It would SO pay to see this performed live by Jacob and Take 6, Pentatonix, Manhattan Transfer or any other amazing group that can handle the insanely genius harmonies. Jacob at the helm leading with his genius as a composer/arranger coming from the background.
You're in luck! czcams.com/video/cAoqM6YICMM/video.html
Not sure which type of "live" you mean, but there is a video of Jacob performing this with take 6 on youtube
Listening to this recording is an ethereal experience. Jacob's inspired vocal arrangement is exquisite AND thrilling, and I am forever grateful for it. Thank you so much, Jacob.
2:30 makes me want to punch a wall its so good
You should do this song with the sounds of you punching a wall
This part is so precious 😭
what makes that part so good? genuinely curious i love jacob..
@@lailaandu3165 its a feeling
@@emotisean ohh lol i thought it had to do with like something in music theory, thx tho lol
This is transcendental and unbelievably great.
what i think is the most incredible about jacob is that all he knows about theory serves to something beyond it. theory is not an end on itself here. when in interviews or his live videos, he says that he does what he does because it provokes a certain feeling, or he simply felt like it. and as i hear this song in loop and getting more chills each and every time i hear it, i sure feel a lot of things. and all i know about music theory is that there are seven notes and they can be sharp or flat. as technical it is, it is intuitive for him, and that's why it's so enthralling. music is a language jacob speaks fluently. quite possibly his native tongue, as he said in his zeitgeist interview for google, that as he was learning to speak he resorted to sound to express himself as well. i digress. oh, and his voice is so smooth. utmost perfect.
Well said. I myself know almost no theory, yet I've an appreciation for what he does not only because I've an inkling of what's involved - because of the complexity of his music, it takes a lot of work to arrange and orchestrate it. Also, some of his chord progressions are reminiscent of the greats (especially jazz ones) and perhaps transcend them. Most importantly though - his music simply invokes strong feelings even with no knowledge of theory, often sublime ones - whether joy or awe, perhaps poignancy or longing. If one has ever wept listening to to the sheer beauty of J.S. Bach's works, then that person know how powerful music can be. Jacob has to power to convey feelings - often very beautiful ones - through his incredible genius.
Straight factsss!
The best acapella piece that i've heard in My entire stupid life!!
No ones life is stupid, everyone's different and stands out in their own way
you have to search the cover of moon river of Jacob, it's extraordinary!!!!
my favorite song by you jacob
Hey Sean, just letting you know, it's not an original song, its one of Stevie Wonder's. Excellent retelling of the song though.
Steeeeevie wonderrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
it is a stevie wonder song

Goodness, I am in tears. The last chord closes out this masterpiece so perfectly...
3:26 gives me the absolute chills its beautiful
3:25 what a voice!
That part is perfection
I don't think Jacob himself understands the pure magic he just performed on this song.
Best version of this song I've ever heard besides Stevie's.
Better.
@@chippchipp1 you're joking right?
Michael Bublè has an amazing version as well. Cried when I heard that one too. Thanks Stevie, Jacob, and Michael, for for eliciting tears of love through this timeless song AND your renditions.
Here we are on earth together,
It's you and I,
God has made us fall in love, it's true,
I've really found someone like you
Will it say the love you feel for me, will it say,
That you will be by my side
To see me through,
Until my life is through
Well, in my mind, we can conquer the world,
In love you and I, you and I, you and I
I am glad at least in my life I found someone
Who may not be here forever to see me through,
But I found strength in you,
I only pray that I have shown you a brighter day,
Because that's all that I am living for, you see,
Don't worry what happens to me
Cause' in my mind, you will stay here always,
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I, you and I
In my mind we can conquer the world
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I
Dear Jacob,
It's been 5 days now since I discovered you on CZcams, I have already bought 2 albums of your composition. Your approach to music is incredible, you're not even in the "genius" category at this stage, in my eyes you are truly a creator. There are some geniuses on this planet, but creators, there are 2 or 3 per century and from a personal point of view, you are one of them.
I have been overwhelmed for 5 days listening to your music and your arrangements. For example, “You and I” amazing, Stevie probably admired your work.
Today I no longer make music, I prefer to listen to others who give me a lot of pleasure and dopanimity.
If Zappa were still alive, he might have overtaken Quincy and you would have contacted yourself saying "but who are you? Prince Igor Strawondshwim?"
You are incredible

This is one of my favees, some parts of the music makes me want to cry, laugh and it really makes me feel in love, THIS IS A REAL PIECE OF ART! love your music Jacob, keep making excellence
It is so amazing to watch an artist blossom ..... Jacob your lead vocals have transformed in an awesome way !! Keep going.. I am honored to watch a legend in the making !!
the most amazing musician that's come along in awhile, and so young! !!!

I think this triggered an existential crisis for me 😢
Been a fan for about a year now, but I never said my piece on this. The first time I heard this song I had put it on in the background(As if it's possible to have this on and not have it take up your full attention) and I was just messing around on my phone. Suddenly about 2/3rds of the way through the song I just abruptly and immediately started crying. Couldn't understand why at first, then I realized it was the song. I was moved subconsciously without even giving the song my full attention. Absolutely incredible piece of music.
I was doing the laundry, listening to this album for the first time and then this song came up. Tears came to my eyes instantly. To hear what was in my heart so beautifully like this moved me so much...
Even though you and I are 14,143km apart for now, in my mind, we can conquer the world.
I will always love you Sara
I come back to this again and again and again. It's so humbling to hear as a musician. It really honors Stevie's original composition while necessarily and spectacularly blazing a new and wonderful path. Bravo!
I've listened to this every day for the last few months and each time I'm blown away. The album In My Room is a gift that keeps on giving, thanks for teaching me so much.
I am utterly floored. That was beautiful. Thank you Jacob.
Congrats on the Grammy win!
3:52 to the end is just heaven
am i hallucinating and just imagining this masterpiece or was it really created by a human?
I'm an actual rock, metamorphicly formed in the heart of a mountain, but one listen to this song and I instantly turned into a cloud made of pure honey
This is, for real, my absolute masterpiece. Not kidding, I've been listening to this over and over for about a year, and introducing J C to others with this crazy thing.
Amazing ! The chordal progressions are surreal. The lyrics come from a very deep place. This has the makings of a hit !!
3:30 blows me away every single time. Little words for how amazing this track is Jacob
Many congratulations to the wonderfully gifted Jacob Collier! Amazing voice and love this song! xxxxx

Wow, that was special. The first piece of music I've heard that made me literally cry because it was that good. Keep it up!
This is such a lovely version. Beautiful
I don't know what it is, but his voice when he sings the note at 3.25 does something to me that I really have no words for. It's like a feeling of pure love. 💖
The added skill of appropriate and occasional use of vocal vibrato takes his work to another level…wow.
Stevie must be sooo honored!!! This is my favorite song of all time (I'm 60 yrs. old) since Stevie Wonder, no one has been able to do this song justice, but this young genius has truly put his stamp on it!!!
How am I crying both tears of joy AND sadness. This is just transcendental. Remarkable.
0:50 chills running down my spine
One of the greatest love songs ever written ... stevie is life
Take 6 on another level. Incredible arrangement Jacob and impeccable delivery. What impressed me the most is the bass part. Your tone. It's...words fail me.
This is one of the most epic versions of this song. Ever!
beautiful voice and harmony - exquisite!
man the buildup at 2:22 where more layers or vocal tracks are slowly added gives me goosebumps everytime
I just commented exactly that timestamp. from 2:20 to 2:43 !
Hahahaha just saw this and your other comment today when I came back to listen... Hopefully Jacob wins that grammy!
So beautiful.

Jacob, thank you so much for sharing !!!
I Love your way to think in music !!
keep going!!
This is by far your best piece of work!
When Stevie Wonder recorded this song, my father (a recording engineer) got the original Braille cover LP of Talking Book. "You And I" made me tear up, at the age of 11.
Here I am, almost 50 years later, and Jacob's making me cry again. Dammit, why do you have to reach into my soul like that? If you do "Killing Me Softly" I'm gonna...
Beautiful! My type of music! 😍 on repeat
3:20 - 3:30 took me church there. This guy is crazy so happy i've seen him live, wish he performed this !
On repeat. Mind blown by this guy.
blessed to hear this
it's been a pleasure to know and listen to you Jacob. Hope to see you on august in Argentina. Big hug
nice cover of a really fabulous stevie number. no-one could compete with the original that knocked me out back in the 70s and still gets me.

This is my favorite among your projects!!!
You are true talent! Your art is inspiring us!
Oh my goodness you sound lovely. Reminds me much of Take 6.

Again, congratulations on winning a Grammy this year with this great, great cover!
I need him to sing at my wedding in about 10 years .
I hope your wish comes true 😊🍀

that would be the most amazing thing to have in a wedding, 8 years left now
Did it happen? 👀

I'm in love with your voice.
While I've most certainly been a fan of Jacob's ever since I first discovered him, I believe this video is the reason I fell in love with his music, and part of the reason I found my own style. So much beauty in so much complexity. I want to strive to achieve something close to this, because if I can, then I believe that I will have reached one of the, if not the, peak of my composition. Thank you Jacob. Your music is truly a gift.
Wonderful man
Wow this is incredible man!
One of most talented composers ever to live if not the most
I'm sure Stevie would give you a friendly slap on the back for doing such a great cover.Well done mate :-)
The actual imagery is from his room. You can see little guitars and his computer screen among other things. I only noticed after the tenth time watching this.
