I was at this concert. I saw them twice at MSG that week. They were by far the best LIVE band on the planet. No two performances were the same. The video doesn't show it but the entire place was full of pot smoke.

Glad that you pointed out that there were more than one show. They played 3 nights. I was at one of the shows but of course you can't tell which night this performance was taken from. Hard to believe that this summer it will be 50 years ago!
My cousin was there ,I believe the Saturday night show. We ended up driving up to Watkins Glen to see the Dead,The Band and the Allman Bros that same weekend. 600K strong there. Took hours to find our car,a '68 Delta Olds lol

yep, like no other. he's either dancing and prancing all over the stage with or without Plant, strapped into his guitar hanging low to his knees in his amazing 'suits' or swaying quietly in the dark with his guitar, head thrown back, eyes closed (rain song). no gimicks just pure genius, stage presence. ROCK STAR GOD!

There has not been that sensual of a lead singer, ever, in my opinion. We worked it all-his voice, his body, his hair. He’s both subtle and dynamic. That coupled with the blues riffs is just sheer perfection.
I imagine a band with Janis Joplin backed by Page, Bonham and Jones. She always needed a better backing band, one that did justice to her voice.
I agree this is a stunning performance. However let me add some comments from a long time fan like me .. which is that the "MSG performance" actually contains bits and pieces from at least the performance in Pittsburgh (on the same east coast swing in 1973) as well. Many of the songs and clips in the "Song remains the Same" film are sliced and combined from at least two or more concerts.
This can sometimes be noticed by observing that film and audio don't match perfectly (they took sound from one performance but film from another and spliced it together). Still, this performance of "Since I've Been Loving You" is one of the best ones. The band often did their best performances on tour in New York and Los Angeles where friends and groupies came to meet them and party before and after the gigs. This is true of the earlier tours as well as the 1975 and 1977 tours.
They also hired an actual real film director to film these concerts. One of the problems the director faced was that John Paul Jones (in particular) refused to use the same stage clothes in the different locations (New York and Pittsburgh lets say) and footage of him can be used to determine when clips are sourced from different locations. This is also one of the reasons we don't see him as much in these clips.
It's also interesting to note that they were wearing these absolutely outrageous outfits .. Page with his "sorcerer" costume with the stars and moons on it and Plant with the sweaty chest and tight trousers. John Paul Jones stage costumes were equally outrageous. It was the seventies after all. Check out Jimi Hendrix clothes for a comparison. By the 1980s these kinds of clothes were out of fashion and looked severely dated .. so it was surprising that Stevie Ray Vaughan brought that bonkers insane clothes fashion back in 1982.
There are sites on the net .. and books for that matter .. that indulge in this kind of Zeppelin archeology for those that obsess about it. I used to know these things but I'm too old now and just like to enjoy the music.
Jimmy Page called their film "The Song Remains the Same" (from which this is sourced) the worlds most expensive home movie.. It is fracking amazing in my opinion and has some stellar moments that still give me goose bumps.
You have some pretty spot on observations and I just love to see that there is new recruitment to the Led Zeppelin mafia. Someone once said that if you wanted to explain to people 1000 years in the future what rock is and was .. you would point them towards Led Zeppelin. There are others that could be added, of course, but Zeppelin is the widescreen bombastic ridiculously over the top distillation of rock.

Brilliant reaction! Indeed, at Zeppelin's peak, they were untouchable. This performance at MSG is evidence of this. Led Zeppelin well and truly earned their status as god-tier.
The studio versions are awesome, but their live performances are always on another level!
I still prefer the album cut. Had I been at MSG? Different story probably. But the tune itself made the blues relevant for me again in the 70s. Like BB Kings "The Thrill Is Gone" and Jimi Hendrix's "Red House" had done earlier.They all sounded like a new and modern form of the music.

Well even the studio version was more or less live, except for the solo hehe.
It’s worth scouring CZcams for all of JP’s solos on this song. Lots of 1971 concerts where Page just absolutely kills everything in the Zep catalogue and Plant is in ultimate form; range and power. Plant sounds great in the MSG 73 song but his voice has lost the upper the end by then. Check out 8/31, 9/14 and 9/29 1971 versions on CZcams. Also IV hasn’t come out yet but Zep introduces Stairway, Black Dog etc. in these shows and they’re slaying everything in sight. 1972 has a lot of great performances too (of course, How the West Was Won), but Page’s real apex is the Euro tour in Spring 1973 - Vienna, Hamburg, Munich etc. Those performances are insane and totally unmatched for speed and power, with Bonham at absolute career peak form

Led Zeppelin are ROCK GODS!!!! Robert Plant is one of the greatest ROCK vocals in music history!!! He just commands the stage with his emotions and passions. I have seen this band 3 times and they always improvise their songs 🎵 instantly in concert bringing a different flavor to their songs that you don't get on the studio version of the songs. They are older now but they will be touring soon and will do some shows in Europe and England, I REALLY urge you to go!!! It maybe the last time these ROCK GODS 🪨 Perform. It will be the BEST experience in your Hip-Hop/Rap Life!!!! I am serious. You will feel and know what my Baby Boomer generation experienced!!!!

Talk about an introduction to a song! Jimmy’s opening guitar hero solo into Plant’s sustained wail and then dropping it down into a slow burning blues number is just about as good as it gets.

When someone mentions Led Zeppelin III, most people immediately think of 'The Immigrant Song.' Understandable, but this song is the best on that album and one of the best in their entire catalog.

This is the definitive Blue's song of all time.
It's all filmed in 35mm film the same thing Hollywood used until digital came out also it's recorded from the 2nd row in front of the stage and the audio was recorded on a separate 2inch film so that's why the sound and video are such high quality.
Remember seeing the movie in the cinema back in 1976, and saw them in concert in 1977, without a doubt the best rock and roll band ever! Each one of them spectacularly talented musicians, together unstoppable.
Saw it at the Argo movie theater in elmont when it came out. I've been in a Zeppelin trance ever since. 😎
Being front and center and gorgeous, many ladies certainly appreciated Plant. But, it was the entire performance, all four of the guys, (Page's guitar, my god! Chills) that gave off a hyper-sexual feeling. I wore out my first copy of Led Zeppelin III album. Glad you reacted to this MSG performance.
Robert Plant was the SWAG master!!!! Legend has it the shirts he wore on stage often looked like a ladies blouse because he wore last nights conquests shirt on stage for the following nights show. Who know if it’s true , but a lot of his shirts in several different concerts do look a bit feminine and kinda small on him. 🤔
He was a vocal master too before he fucked up his voice.

I grew up in this era -- many of their songs were not played on the radio - We got introduced to them by friends who had their records and as soon as they put out a new one we would snap it up never even hearing a song beforehand --- They were too dangerous looking (sexy) for their photos to be in mags like Tiger Beat or Seventeen --- They really werent on TV shows like American Bandstand or Ed Sullivan Show and Rolling Stones Magazine absolutely HATED them -- other than a few sparse photos that you might find here or there I dont remember even seeing what they looked like or who was who and I was a big fan -- I had all their albums -- every one of them a treasure to me --- I remember seeing Robert for the first time on MTV singing Big Log during the start of his solo career = it wasnt till I got to see all these great videos on CZcams to see them in concert --- I had the tickets in my hand when John Bonham passed so I was never able to see them live

Any other band would have devolved into complete chaos, but it's a testimonial to the greatness and intuition of each member.
You’re describing Page’s phrasing, which really is unique. On good nights, it’s transcendent and flowing; on off nights it can sound a little disjointed and choppy. I actually think this isn’t Page’s best live solo of this song (as cool and awesome as it is). There are many many bootlegs of this song on CZcams and Page plays it a little differently each night! Another thing to notice about Page’s style is all the many different fills he uses - connecting phrases and rhythmic flourishes you can hear between verses. As great as Page’s solos are, he does so many other cool and amazing things live. Rhythm, textures, fills creating exciting details to hear - no one ever did those better in the big picture of a concert.

Saw them at Earls Court 1975, the Physical Graffiti tour. Swapped 2 tickets for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band for 1 Zep ticket. Really good seat, centre & about 20 rows back. They blew me away, astonishingly good. Plant was great with the crowd, bits of chit chat between songs. They were the greatest band of earth at that time, the undisputed kings of rock.
I actually prefer the live versions of this song more than the album cut. Great concert tune. And Jimmy Page's Les Paul is on FIRE! Totally riding the lightning as only Jimmy can.

All shows were no less than 3 hours long, and no two shows were exactly the same. Depending on the song, they each had the freedom to improvise. As a child of the 70s I had the good fortune of seeing them twice. In Philadelphia '75 and MSG '77. I still have the ticket stubs from both shows along with a NY radio station pin handed out at MSG and the t-shirt I bought at MSG. Next maybe do other songs from the '73 MSG show. The Rain Song and No Quarter are great from this show. If you're real adventurous, do Dazed and Confused. It's almost 30 minutes long.
That is the beauty of art, it cannot be defined, labelled or put into a box in order for our minds to process it. It just is.
Musically, as regards phrasing, time signatures, improvisation, Zep was the master. What you were referring to in Page's playing is phrasing. He will speed up, slow down, play dense and then more open phrasing throughout the song. At the end is a great example of slowing the song down to a near stand still to bring it home. Masterful. That look in the faces of the audience is a reflection of that mastery.
I was lucky enough to see them live 2 times at The Forum in Inglewood. Two of the best shows I have ever seen. I am 72 and have seen hundreds. These guys always took you away during their performances.
Truly intelligent take on Zeppelin for a man that admittedly hasn't heard/listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin. I'm very impressed, and few "reactors" on you tube impress me at all, esp. when it's Zeppelin they're reacting to. Congrats, Syed.
It's hard to believe that this song was omitted from the original "The Song Remains the Same" live double album. It was finally released when Jimmy Page remastered and expanded the album in 2007. What a performance!
For me, the most spectacular performance from this album is the epic version of "Whole Lotta Love". Zeppelin turns it into a medley of covers in the middle and the whole band ROCKS. On this song especially, Jimmy Page's guitar work is unsurpassed. I'd love to see your reaction to this one!
Brilliant reaction to a brilliant performance! Besides the superhuman and sublime performance of the band, I love all the crowd shots too. For some reason, the shot of the giant squishy ball being bounced around by the crowd in the middle of Jimmy's solo, sort of symbolizes the rock concerts of that era to me. It's like a time machine right back to it.

Re: Page's guitar. It's called phrasing and nobody did it better. He was a master of creating tension and expectation.
I play guitar and have a copy of his own notations and the reason why people play his guitar riffs etc and don't sound exactly the same is because he'd changed the standard notation to what suited his songs and made a lot of his own up, this is what gives him that sound, it's a pity I can't take photos of them and put them on here.

I've often thought of this band as the blues on steroids, and I think this song could be one of the best examples of that. This is perhaps the best live performance from them, or any other rock band, ever, for that matter…save, possibly Floyd's Comfortably Numb at Pulse. Rock Gods indeed, Syed. Great reaction!
This particular performance is way out far out best one I have ever heard.
That whole film that this comes from needs to be seen in its entirety for sure but if you want another masterpiece show then their amazing appearance at Royal Albert Hall not long after the release of their 2nd album fills the bill and they are in early Zeppelin power and glory mode. Do try How Many More Times there, it is a 20 minute epic and Page's amazing, stinging lead is on full display. Zeppelin has endless live recordings on You Tube, some have video but most are audio only and often the quality varies but always worth a listen, they always vary things from show to show and have a brilliance for improv and seeing where it takes them and us. When you were trying to come up with words for the way Jimmy Page is playing on this and really a lot of the time, the actual terms you're looking for or staccato and Legato. So he does a whole bunch of machine gun burst Superfast staccato, which is a whole bunch of percussive really fast stuff, and then he'll slip into a legato, which just means everything is smooth and connected. And typically it will get a whole lot more melodic at that point and then he can switch it up but if you think about it they're all doing that, listen to John on the drums he's doing the same thing, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant with his voice, it's all the same thing and it fits together so well like a jigsaw puzzle even with elements of Improv, because these guys are at the top of their game right now. They really are.
Now we are waiting for the reaction to the most amazing performance from the same concert of Dazed and Confused. Absolutely everything is wonderful there - Bonzo, Plant and of course the crazy guitar solo from Jimmie

You said it, the way Page bends the notes is what makes him the best, they call it "playing with feeling" Page didn't play the fastest or the cleanest
(drugs and alcohol) but he played with feeling and wrote the best songs. Gilmore also played like this.
the fastest? have you seen "in my time of drying?" the cleanest? Page began his career as a studio session musician in London and by the mid-1960s was the most sought-after session players. He can play as 'clean' as he wants...he plays how he feels, changes and experiments with his amazing band keeping perfect timing with him. Plus, you try doing 3 sometimes 4 HOUR CONCERTS NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. give me a break.

In Page’s live prime; I think he was the greatest of all time at controlling and projecting a concert as an epic avant garde tour de force. There a lot of guitarists who have their preferences of players - Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, VH, Hendrix are players’ players- but no one projected to an audience a bigger performance than prime Jimmy Page. Blackmore was maybe in that league but didn’t have Page’s total vision.
Revising to say Hendrix and VH were also awesome performers but didn’t aim for that epic event with a dozen styles at the same level. Hendrix died unfortunately so who knows?
I like so much your reactions bro! About the guitar solo, what you were talking about, is what as guitarists, we are calling SUSTAIN! It means how long the notes last, and how long the strings vibrate! When you have some pedals effects, to transform the sound, like distortion, fuzz, delay pedals, etc, it can continue forever....but PAGE, didn't used that kind of effects, so, basically, he had no long sustain! Which is, completely crazy! At that time, and even today! It's super complicated to play with that sound, but, as you said, that solo is just MAGIC!😅✌️👍PS: you're only the second person reacting who notices the face of the cop😅👍✌️Mesmerized, like all the audience! I'm sure that cop wasn't listening to rock music at that time!😅And, as you said, the conversations, between the guitar and the voice are, just, magic! One of the best version of that masterpiece for sure!
Back in the 80's, I remember going out of my way over 20 miles to get to a video (VHS)of this concert from a rental store in whisky victor By God. The Song Remains the Same. Hammer of the Gods baby. 🤪
