- Butter Toffee Candy
2 sticks butter
3 Tablespoons water
1 cup sugar
3 Hershey bars
Place butter, water, and sugar in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thick and a deep copper color; about the color of an old penny.
Pour onto a parchment paper lined, or well buttered, cookie sheet.
Break up Hershey bars and place on top of hot candy. Allow chocolate to melt. (I turn another cookie sheet upside down to cover the candy.) Spread the melted chocolate over the toffee.
Place in the refrigerator until candy cools and chocolate is hardened. Break into pieces.

This is the exact recipe how my 96 year old Aunt ( R.I.P.) used to to make. The only difference was she put nuts on the top. I have to tell you, she never timed her cooking process. I asked her how long do you cook it. She said it was done when you see the first puff of smoke, then immediately take it off the burner. This never fails. Every time I make it I think of her and miss her.❤
Blessings 🙏🏼🤍🌟
just watched this for the first time in December 2023! Looks so easy and looks so delicious!!
This is the 1st time I've come across your videos & I love it! I've made my own toffee before, (using my own recipe), and I have a suggestion for you - just before you pour the toffee on the cookie sheet, turn the fire off & quickly stir in 1 cup of chopped pecans. Then proceed as usual. It'll make a huge, and delicious, difference!
I thought about that but didn't know if it would mess it up, thank you!
Or, you could sprinkle the pecans (or anything else: pretzels, crackers, nuts, etc,) evenly on the baking sheet and pour the toffee over it!
That is the way I make my toffee. One batch I make with chopped pecans and one with almonds. Our family loves chopped nuts and I use dark chocolate. This is a very versatile
Recipe.
That looks delicious 🤤👍🏻
Sounds yummy!
I just love him using the pennies to show what color you need.
Thank you Tom. I'm making this tomorrow for all the grandkids who are here for Christmas. Thank you Melissa for posting these recipes.
You’re very welcome! We hope everyone loves it! Merry Christmas!
The. Candy. Looks. good 21:13 21:13
Definitely delish
The candy was delicious you made following the recipe easy to follow.
Thanks for showing us how to make such a wonderful treat!
Do you also make soft caramels?
Your videos and instructions take the guess work out + removes the fear of messing up! Thank you so much for the easy to follow videos from your table to ours.
Have a blessed Labor Day weekend.
Another surefire gauge for toffee doneness is an ordinary brown paper grocery bag. Keep it nearby - but not too near the heat - and when the candy has cooked to the point that it’s the same color as the bag, it’s done and ready to pour out. Works every time!
Great idea! Thanks!
My recipe calls for brown sugar but never gets crunchy, I'm using yours next time. Thanks
@tracyosborne6963: Brown sugar tends to have MORE moisture in it due to the molasses! Perhaps, that may be one of the reasons why the TOFFEE never becomes CRUNCHY; however, when baking cookies and you DESIRE moisture, i.e. chewiness...BROWN SUGAR or a combination of granulated (white sugar) and Brown Sugar (molasses) is IDEAL! ;-D Go with this all WHITE SUGAR recipe it is wonderful! 😀 *P.S. Sometimes, I use "infused" vanilla white (granulated) sugar...the vanilla beans in the sugar brings an even greater FLAVOR profile! ;-D Blessings to you & yours!
I absolutely love you two! Tom is excellent explaining all the ingredients and steps. Your videos are terrific!!!! Much love and God's blessings to you both! ❤
Woo-hoooo!🎉 I just made toffee for the first time (first of many, I'm sure!) and it took less than fifteen minutes. Looks good and has a nice crunch, so I think I did it right. YUM! TY for the video!🤗
Yes, thank you so much. I can’t wait to try it.
This is so beautiful. Not just the delightful recipe, but the shared cooking experience. The safe feeling that is created by the sound of your voice. It's truly lovely.
Thank you so much! Your comments really encourage us! We hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
Definitely!
When you live with an angry controlling man - it’s a welcome change I was waiting for irritation or exasperation or a tone 😣
But his genuine gentleness, like you said continued.
❤
He has such a soothing voice , that's so nice.
This is the third time I've had to click on the bell. Your my favorite cook of all time. Thank you dear mr.man😂 you guys have a merry Christmas 😅😂🎉❤
Melissa, thank you so very much for the written recipes!! I know it takes extra time, and I appreciate it!
I'm going to try making this and really appreciate that a candy thermometer isn't needed. This candy is one of my favorites!! Thank you for sharing. 🎄🌟
You’re welcome! We love how easy it is, too! Merry Christmas!
I thought I loved watching you both before, but then butter toffee happened and I’ve just committed myself to yet another dessert to prepare before Sunday😊You both are great and seem to have the same relationship as my husband and myself. Thank you for sharing such yummy recipes with us all. Merry Christmas to you and yours🎄
My mother always used an iron skillet because it distributes and holds the heat. The trickiest thing about this candy is knowing when it is browned enough, not too much and not enough. But with practice, I found I could get it just right. My mother always used chocolate chips and sprinkled crushed almonds over the chocolate. My FAVORITE candy!! Yum!! We only make this for Christmas. It’s such a treat. Thanks for sharing this video. It brings back childhood memories.
I just started watching your video a few days ago and saved some of your receipts. Been looking for this one thanks for sharing Sandy
Thank you for sharing. I can hardly wait to make it.
Made it today for the first time Tom, the only change I had to make was I used dark chocolate, as we did not have milk chocolate in house…it is still cooling, so I’m not sure what it will taste like compared to milk chocolate…thanks Tom 👏👏👏🟦
This Butter Toffee Candy recipe looks so delicious 😋Mr. Tom.
I just LOVE you guys! Hearing you talk about the memories tied to recipes and food makes me feel like you are part of my family memories. So love all you share. Thanks Tom and Melissa👍🏻. I know what you were meaning when you said five thumbs up. I don’t watch videos to make ugly comments. Keep it up💕. Can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you for that encouragement. We really do appreciate the nice comments. We have over 100 videos on our channel posted now. We hope you can enjoy a bunch of them. Thank you again for watching.
Listening to you stir the bubbling candy is wonderful ASMR. 😊
Thanks for sharing this. It's much less intimidating now I've seen it done, rather than just reading a recipe.
My mom would always make this recipe every Christmas. While the chocolate was still warm, she would sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans on top. Yummmmmm😍
Love the way you break it! Nifty trick.
I… have watched this or listened to this video while doing house work at least a dozen times a day. It’s just so joyful, you are both so lovely. I’m going to watch it again real soon. Bye from Sydney Australia 😊
That’s my favorite candy of all time!
I had forgotten how simple this recipe is I haven't made this since I was in High School. My grandkids are going to love them 💕 thanks Tom!
My Mom loves my microwave peanut brittle. My daughter and nephew loves my chocolate covered cherries. I love making candy at Christmas.
I made this recipe when I was 13 in home economics. Lost the recipe and so missed this treat. Thanks for posting this I plan to make for my kids this Christmas.
Oh my goodness yummy!
I remember making this as a freshman in high school in Home Ec class in 1966. I think our recipe came from either Better Homes and Gardens or Betty Crocker cookbooks. We used a candy thermometer to bring it to desired temperature (didn't go by color). My family loved it. I made it for several years until my sister and I joined Weight Watchers and convinced our parents to follow the program, too. The was the end of my candy making. Now that I'm diabetic, I doubt I'll be making this but may enjoy a SMALL piece if it happens to be at the family Christmas do. :)
So, so good!
