    You make this look so easy.
    In 1970, I built my first balsa/paper airplane, it was a line control flying plane. After several builds with paper and dope, I switched to a Monokote (Heat shrinking product), and never went back to paper. I ended up building over 50 planes in my time.
    Fast forward to 2002, I built my last RC plane. I haven't touched another balsa plane since.
    2023 I built my very first Guillow's plane, it is a Hawker Hurricane. I did the paper and glue with water/alcohol mixture. It was a bit tricky as I tore some of the paper (I must have pulled too hard when tightening it). After many hours and a few months later, I finally finished it. It looks okay, not great, but okay. I know that my next one will go faster and look better.
    This video is going to help me tremendously.
    By the way, I went crazy and bought 12 Guillow's kits in the beginning of 2023, so I will be busy between building balsa kits and my plastic kits.

    Not the best tissue covering job I've seen, but for the overall time taken, really good. I mean, covering a fuselage with just two pieces of tissue with so little wrinkling? Impressive! Seriously!! I don't think I could do better.
    I like how you inserted a two dimensional pilot. Nice detail, and great way to save weight.

    I have that kit and haven’t yet got around to building it.
    I have not seen that particular method of applying the tissue before, but it is fairly straightforward and is less toxic than using dope.
    I look forward to seeing how it flies in the next video!
    Happy flying!

      Cheers Mike, wet tissue is a new departure for me but it went well, I think some tissues are more delicate than others though but I guess I was lucky. When you read the Guillow's tissue covering instructions for this model they suggest 17 pieces each side!! I guess that's what the number 17 means on the side 😁 I think once you try a glue stick you won't bother with dope again, see the answer to Irwin's question above for more information.

    Hey Cliff, big fan of your videos! I'm fairly new to model building and I had a question. How long have you been using normal water to shrink the tissue paper? Have you ever used dope of any kind, or maybe a water-dope mix? I've always used water to shrink the tissue, and it's worked well, so should I stick with normal water on every balsa model?
    Thank you!

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 3 lety +1

      I use to go straight in with thinned dope but on these small models you're immediately adding weight. Sometimes just water can shrink too much so some modellers prefer to mix water with alcohol, the water does the shrinking and the alcohol evaporates. You can't thin cellulose dope with water by the way but you can, and should, thin 'Eze dope' with water. I plan ti try Eze dope on my next model it looks very good. Thanks for commenting 👍

    When I covered models like that with lightweight Esaki Japanese tissue I would first dope the frame edges with one coat 50/50 dope, let dry and flour paper (very fine Woodworker's sand paper) the raised up "fuzz" on the wood. Find grain direction of tissue just as you did then cut a piece 1/2" to 3/4" bigger all round. Then dope the frame edges again with 50/50 dope and lay dry tissue over the structure and gently pull tight. To mould tissue around edges lick a finger and mould now locally damp tissue around the corner. Add dope locally with brush if it lifts off and mould again.
    To cut excessive tissue around edges I would first crack a double edged razor blade in half and use that. MUCH sharper than a scalpel blade. If I wanted a pointed end blade whilst covering i would twist one half of the razor to breaking point to get one pointed end. To get a neat edge join along the spine of the fuselage, I would actually cut the dry tissue to fit exactly by trial and error on a cut mat such that the overlap stopped before the open tissue area. Dope around the edges as before using the brush edgewise and any dope that flows away from the edge into the open tissue area wipe quickly away. Very carefully lay tissue in place, moulding with licked finger as required and adding dope with brush edge as required. Check for lifting edges and re dope and lick finger and rub as required. If all secure, light water spray as you do then let dry. For a light structure such as your FW 190 dope three coats of 33% dope, 67% thinner. When in the UK Humbrol dope shrinks up well, but for hotter climates such as Australia, needs a less powerful shrinking dope.
    For wings and tail planes I'd cover the bottom first. If under cambered wing section then dope all lower rib edges and lower spar surfaces. Run half razor blade around edges and mould edges to wood with licked finger. Cut top piece oversize at LE and TE but at dihedral break on polyhedral wings cut curves on cut matt by trial and error to get an exact match. Dope around edges and top of dihedral break ribs only, lay on dry tissue and rub down all over, but not around LE and TE yet. When dope is dry enough fold around LE and make cuts at each end to give 1/16" overlap actually cutting very lightly on the wing. Then lay wing on cut mat and with steel rule on the short cut marks, cut tissue. If elliptical wing make a series of very light cuts through folded around tissue on the LE wood itself then join these cut marks up either by free hand or using a Draughtsman's "flexi curve", being careful not to nick it with the blade. Dope LE just where you want overlap to stick and mould around LE. Lick finger and remould and dope as required. Same process for the TE. Then water spray and let dry. Finally dope wings with three coats of 50/50 if a 1/2A power model and tail plane with three coats 33/67. If an Open Rubber model three coats of 33/67 on wing and two 33/67 on tail plane and fin. Three 50/50 on fuselage if structure will take it.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 3 lety +1

      Sorry about that Tim, it's actually not paint but simply strips of black tissue stuck directly to the white plastic, then the whole lot given a couple of coats of matt lacquer. The plastic pieces need to be approached and fitted with patience, making small adjustments to both the balsa and plastic as you go. Very little of it will be perfect but the finished result will be pleasing enough. 🙂👍

    Nice video Cliff, really enjoy watching them. I have a question about painting these models. I've just finished building and covering my hurricane with white tissue and shrunk the tissue with water. I was wondering can I airbrush it with airbrush acrylic paint?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Kelly, thanks for watching and commenting 👍 I would give the shrunk tissue a light coat of either thinned down dope or a spray of matt lacquer from a can. This will help to seal the pores of the tissue. But my biggest piece of advice is to make a little square of balsa and tissue it as you've done the model, then finish it as you want, if it works then dobit to the model, if not try a different approach. Is the model for static display or flight. If the former then the number of coats won't matter but the latter be frugal as paint can add a lot of weight. Hope this helps.

    How did you manage to attached the cowl and keep it steady? I am building the same kit. I watched your trim videos, and it looks like you have some sort of dowel system to line the cowl up with the fuselage the same way each time. Thanks for the great content!

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Před 3 lety

      Hi Clayton, I made a balsa disc with a balsa box attached which slides over a balsa plug which is fixed to the back of the inside of the cowl. The disc could be glued to the cowl I guess to make things less complicated. But you are correct, I used three locating toothpick dowels (although two would do) to locate the cowl in the same position everytime. This is important because when I've finished trimming for flight I fix the down and side thrust washer in place on the cowl under the thrust button. I also used one 4mm magnet to help secure the cowl when the tension is off of the rubber motor. Hope this is useful?

      Hi Irwin, it's only a glue stick, 'Pritt' in the UK, the one to get is the children's version, it's blue (so you can see where the glue is) but dries clear ... ideal for our uses, I have been told that some of water soluble what isn't so good of course, you would have to experiment but they're cheap to buy. 2nd answer: Once the glue has cured, not long to wait actually, the tissue was quite wet and it just tares along the glue line, the torn edge blends well with the tissue below really well I find. 👍
