I was born in Melbourne in 1944 and lived in Kew and was brought up with Trams, we never had a car in those days, Trams were our way of life ,just loved them
1981, the year i was born, i remember the good old trams & those old buses when i was a kid. Check out all the XD's they were brand new back then. Love the footage as usual Geeza👍

Haha, good pick up with the song. I actually knew it was released 2 years after the footage, though I thought the music suited the song. I didn’t expect someone to notice the time difference so quickly.👍⭐️
I think those Orange trams hit the rails in the Mid 70's. I remember my Father bought home some promotional printed cardboard Trams that you folded up into a model. Don't know where he got them from, and sadly can't ask him now (dec. Oct 2020) ! R.I.P Dad !! Also, does anyone else remember the old Diesel loco they had at Spencer Street Station for many years before it was ruined ?! It was always a "kids highlight" when visiting Spencer St when seeing off relatives or whatever. It was called the "Harold Clapp" and was part of the first MOOMBA parade in 1954. Amazing photos to be found online, which I recommend to all fellow nostalgic's out there !!
OMG OMG OMG. Trams with doors open. How ever did people not fall out continuously. And tram stops that don't interrupt the traffic. How ever did we cope. I had my first child in 1981, he's now 40 and this makes me feel so old.

@ 0:08 RESI Building Society became RESI-Statewide Building Society after a merger and it then morphed into the Bank Of Melbourne (the original one - not the one that exists now) that was eventually taken over by Westpac and absorbed into them (they recreated the BoM 20 years later out of St George Bank in Victoria in a cynical attempt to gain business). And the Classic Restaurant next to Young & Jackson’s - remember being taken there’s many times as a child by parents. It is now a McDonalds.
Wuuu...that's cool bus right now at 1:35. In this date of time, I guess this MUST be after 87 the Vietname war. That I can see some Asians amid the majority of Australian. The city traim and school kids on excursion remain the same and I guess this is either on Elizabeth St near David Jones. Homeless bum ZERO.
My town...I was 16-17 then. Going to the city was becoming more regular. It took 28 minutes by train. The same as it does forty years later in 2020 and the same as it did forty years earlier in 1940. We’ve come a long way. I think it is safer now, than in 1980. At least on my old line. The green trams were lovely, what a shame they are gone. But at least we still have trams. In 1980, the old liberal government was ready to sell off and shut down the public transport network at the drop of a hat.
I'm the same age as you. I was just starting to go into the city more by myself and with friends in 1981. However, then my family moved and I started uni elsewhere, and my next memories of Melbourne are from 1986. There were three types of trains when I was in secondary school: the old red rattlers, with beautiful moulded interiors, the blue trains and the modern silver trains. I loved riding the red trains with the doors pulled open and the air rushing in.
