I was a fan of things before, but my first actual fandom experience was Harry Potter. I don't think I've ever engaged in fandom without an online component, though. Things were different in the early 2000s, but even back then, the core of my fandom was online communities. I'm so grateful for the internet for making it possible for fans to come together and share experiences and creativity with each other on such a large scale!

My first fandom was Roswell. Conventions and author signings and trips to the set.
I just finished This Adventure Ends and I loved it. It is a accurate look at loss in teens while still finding the lighter side of life. I love the fandom inclusion. Some lines about fanfiction had me actually verbalizing..."So true, so true".
I actually requested your other novel from the library after reading this one.

This is beautiful. My first fandom was CSI when I was 13 or 14. Then I pretty much hopped on the procedural drama bandwagon for a while. I'm not currently an active part of any fandoms, but I'd consider myself a passive player in at least a dozen fandoms for TV shows, books, and a few movies.

I was so obsessed with the flower fairy books too! I had 4 of them, and it caused me to begin collecting porcelain fairies :D Now I'm into a billion different fandoms. But Buffy was what brought me to online fandom things (fanfiction, music videos, forums). Also, I'm really excited to read your new book. I still have to get/read the first one though (of which I am also excited, just very broke).

I don't remember my first fandom but I just got into the Supernatural fandom (the show) and I love the community. Fandoms make you feel like you're not alone in loving this thing, no matter your age. And I don't think anyone should grow old of it.

Oh fandom! It has defined my entire life in a similar way to yours but I joined the online part much earlier. I think my online first fandom was Harry Potter, I'm not going to even try and guess at my first offline obsessions, and I have far too many fandoms that I'm in to list (not really but it would take awhile)! I'm fascinated with how fandom can enrich and expand the universe of the original media, and I am constantly blown away by the amazing work that is produced. I love it and I love being an unabashed fan with like minded people.
Also, hurray for 'no Frodo'! That made my day so much better!

Let's see, fandoms: Smurfs, GI Joe, Pee-wee Herman (HARD, explains a lot), Friends, Harry Potter (also HARD), Vlog Brothers, Rhett and Link (I freaked out inwardly when they recognized me), Wheezy Waiter (we're now on 'handshake-hug' terms), Meeka Kitty, Elmify (we even smile awkwardly at each other and then disappear, afraid of that "do they know me" thing at Vidcon) and finally, Busvlogger. Out of all of the characters, I relate the most to Sloane's dad. Like him, I enjoy writing and fandom. My favorite character besides Sloane's dad is Frank. He's just such a great character? When I was 13 I became obsessed with an Argentinian show called Los Simuladores (The Pretenders), which is widely considered one of the best shows ever made here. This year, 13 years after the show's 2 only seasons ended the main cast reunited at comic-con, and after that I found a Facebook group of mega fans of the show. I love how everyone know the dialogues, and they even make memes of it, even though memes didn't even exist back when the show was on. I never thought there would be such an awesome community behind it, considering shows from here very rarely create fandoms

    • @elmify
      @elmify  Před 8 lety

Ooh I just googled that show and the premise sounds really cool. That's awesome that the cast was able to reunite!!! And that memes abound even now! I feel like that a little about the show Friends-- like while it was on, I was not conscious of the internet at all, but since it's been up on Netflix, it's really fun to see all this commentary and gifs/memes/thoughts about the show online.

It's funny, I actually tend to chronicle my adolescence based on what my most prominent fandom of the time was.
As a small child, I eagerly consumed The Magic School Bus on a daily basis (because that's as often as I could watch it). I would play make believe, casting myself as Arnold and my mother as Ms. Frizzle. There were multiple kitchen incidents stemming from things I had seen including coating the floor with maple syrup to produce a frictionless environment and turning myself and my younger brother blue with an inkpad intended for stamps. We also tried to dig a hole to China and I accidentally hit my brother in the face with a shovel, giving him a scar he still has to this day. It also made me want to be an astronaut, leading to getting a flight suit costume that I wore until it absolutely could not fit me anymore. I can't say that it had the biggest impact of anything I consumed around that time as I've never really taken much to the sciences in my life, but one thing I learned from Ms. Frizzle was how to be joyfully enthusiastic about something.

I apparently made my mother read me Cinderella over and over, every single day so that is probably the first. The first fandom I really remember is The Magic Far Away Tree I loved those books so much, I wanted so much to climb up to the top of it and see all the magic lands.
However reading Harry Potter I was enthralled I was never really one for getting merch (for one thing we really didn't have much money) but I spent ages carving wands and brooms then I would take a bunch of books to my tree house and play Hogwarts. I was really obsessed and while not in the same way I still am.

First fandom... wow... obviously this was before the internet was a thing, so I don't know that it really "counts" as a fandom, but boy, did I love the Power Rangers as a kid. And Care Bears. And then Jurassic Park (I was simultaneously fascinated and terrified when I watched it as a young kid... I think I was around 6?! Now as an adult with 6-year-old relatives, I'm like, "that is WAY too young to watch Jurassic Park!").
My first internet-involved fandom was Harry Potter. I joined a chat room type community that was based out of England (I don't remember the name, and it's probably not a thing anymore); I was on it CONSTANTLY during my limited computer time as a 13-year-old. My username was * kewl~hermione *, so that everyone would know I was "kewl." I posted short stories, read a lot of fanfics, and obsessively sought out theories about what would happen in upcoming books. Good times.

I have a long history of obsessions. When i was in kindergarden I loved the powerpuff girls. I was even buttercup once for halloween and i have a lot of other merch from those days. Then in first grade I became obsessed with winx club and its kinda sad to say that I still am more knowledgeable about that than I probably should be. Then I got obsessed with percy jackson and pirates of the caribbean. These obsessions were pretty worrying. Then came Harry Potter which continues to be my favorite thing till this day. That was followed by sherlock (which i dont really like anymore). Then came doctor who (whcih i love!) and then came supernatural (which i like but not love). Then came buffy the vampire slayer/angel the series and this was a BIG one. And now im just kinda stuck with all of these

When I was younger my family would go on walks with my friend's family and we each become a different character from LotR as we went on our journey to Mordor. It always ended up with my friend picking first and being Legolas, I would choose second and became Aragorn, my little brother was always forced to be Gimli because of his height, chubby cheeks, and curly hair (and partly because it entertained us). He took it like a pro and brought the character to life with all of his rage.
Recently I have been counting down the days till we revisit Stars Hollow with great anticipation!

I think my first ever fandom was Wishbone. I remember getting these cool packages every month with stickers, posters, a newsletter, and other various goodies. Or...maybe that only happened once? Either way, Wishbone was/is the absolute best!!
The first fandom where I actually engaged with others --both online and IRL-- to discuss theories, share favorite quotes, analyze characters, and just geek out about the awesome material was Harry Potter.
Also: NOOOO, FRODOOOO = YES :-D

WISHBONE!!!!! I watched all the Wishbones as a kid! It taught me a lot about classic literature!
I missed out on the online aspect of the Harry Potter fandom, but I imagine it was really cool to be in when the books/films were still coming out (I imagine it's still cool but like, not knowing where the series would up must've added to the fun!)

I miss Emma's videos, I so wish she still made them - I was reminded of her because of something _completely_ random, and thought "I wonder if she's made anything in the last few years" and no, sadly not
PLEASE, come back to making occasional videos - I'll even stop proposing if that makes a difference 😁

I'm sure I had a fandom before harry potter but that was the first one that owned my life as a child. My friends and I played harry potter at school: jenny was always harry, then melissa and I would fight over who got to be hermione that day. At home, being the oldest sister, I got to claim hermione.
Currently I would say I'm most entrenched in the small webseries fandom, so shows like project green gables or twelfth grade etc. that have small but devoted audiences and we kind of all know each other.

That's awesome!!! My friend and I would set up my backyard like it was Diagon Alley (so we would just leave stuff in different spots all around, making it the different "stores") but we were always original characters, and Harry and Ron were our boyfriends. :D:D:D:D

Harry Potter was my first fandom I took some sort of active part in (fanfiction/fanart/community). If being in the rugrats fandom was a thing then that was my first because I was obsessed as a kid. The second would be Degrassi I guess. It wasn't until I had been watching it for years that I realized that other people in my classes were watching it and then once that was out of the bag it was all we talked about.

I definitely got overly obsessed with a lot of things, books mostly, but my first real fandom experience was probably Harry Potter (still is to this day) because I found the online communities where that was the passion.
These days it's interesting because fandoms aren't so much about the "thing" itself but the branches within it, mainly ships, and because of this fandoms as a whole for a show/book/movie are divided. Something like Harry Potter is very much about the whole thing, with the ships being present but not causing conflict. Many other fandoms aren't united, they're split based on what people ship. Like you still like the overall show (seems to be where the shipping causes the most division), but you group with other people on the internet based on what you ship in it. I've found it fascinating. Horrible at times, absolutely, but still fascinating.

I guess I came to fandoms late. As a kid I had unicorn posters and then boys from teen magazines all over my room, but I wasn't really fans of them, just liked the look.
I think the first fandom I identified with was the Nerdfighters and I think it was because they share my same values and it isn't just about the look of the "characters" or silly storylines, but people I felt comfortable looking up to and (since I was in my 30s when I became a fan) having my daughters look up to them.
I really like a lot of books, movies, songs, etc. but I don't consider myself in their fandoms, I don't buy all the stuff or connect with other fans except for Vlogbrothers.

The only fandom I'm still active in is Buffy, though less active than I was back before LJ imploded and also it just seems like the fandom for that show is finally dying a slow death after it managed to hold on for so long. Unfortunately the other shows I'm into enough to fic for (Dexter, Xena) are basically flatlined in terms of fandom so mostly my relationship with them has become a solo one.
