I guess you could say that what we do on this channel is anti-Bushcraft. Not that we're against Bushcraft, but that the current state of bushcrafting is to find solutions to age old problems using old skills and new gear. What we do is look at how age old problems have been solved with modern gear and ask ourselves "How would I have done this with the stuff available a hundred years ago?'"
While the claim by some is that we are preserving old skills, the reality is that unless your using the old gear, you're not really preserving anything.

I often carry a WWII German bread bag and canteen w/ accessories from At the Front. Maybe not period correct but very practical for day hikes.

It all depends on what your purpose is. If you're thru hiking the Appalachian Trail, you want light weight. If you're heading to the woods to cook on a campfire and smell sunlight on pine needles, it doesn't really matter unless you have a medical condition that suggests you should go lightweight. I use my musette bag for overnights when I do a Classic Camping outing, and a lot of reproductions like it to represent the "surplus" of the time. Thanks for watching!
@@sargevining I'm from Britain so no AT for me haha but the system is designed for anything from edc to abandon society, pannier component currently waiting on funds but if mobile then 8 rockets and the main pack will be on the cycle.
I've got a lot of ACU gear because it's relatively cheap and - for surplus stores - in great shape (NOS). I assume it's from the switch from ACU to OCP.

I think a haversack is what ever kind of bag I want to use for the job ! Your. Bag is a haversack if you want it to be , mine is made from the legs of old blue jeans due to my low income . We all have right to call our bags whatsoever we want , I love your videos they give me ideas to make what I can't afford to but . I think your videos are a service to all !😊😊😊

Thanks for watching and subbing! I hope you enjoy your journey here. I've got things broken up into playlists, the two most general are The History of Camping Gear and Classic Camping Living History. One compliments the other but I realize there are folks who aren't fans of one or the other. The History of Camping Gear starts in the 1890s and progresses towards the 1990s. We're almost near the end, then I start going back to "fill in the gaps" to add in different things in a more or less chronological order.

Just in case anyone wants to add to their storehouse of useless information, the US Army used some variation of these from the Revolution through the Spanish and Philippine Wars but called them "Knapsacks". (Check out the M1907 version for a neat design.).
The Musette is/was a French Bagpipe played while hanging under the left arm by a strap. The French Polius called their version of the European "Bread or Ration Bag" a "Musette" due to some fancied resemblance and that strange French sense of humor.
I carried a M1936 (actually M1943) Field Bag in the service, the WWII version had the snap hooks on adjustable straps that attached to the belt suspenders. There was also a variation of the Utility Strap with D-rings instead of snap hooks for slinging this bag, we used the inside loop to store the carrying strap when wearing the bag on our backs.

This was a suggested video through the algorithm and I was delighted by your delivery. I feel I may have come across your channel some long while ago, but can't recall entirely.
It's, no doubt, the period-historical-camping-bushcrafty aspect that triggered the algorithm. I do 1750s to 1840 lifestyle stuff.
It's not living history or reenacting. We're not pretending to be somebody else, our clothes are our clothes and not costumes, we don't (ok, most of us don't) have coolers keeping beer cold hidden in our shelters, we don't have scenarios, don't do first person, etc. We are an educational/research/practical-skills-of-the-period-applying bunch. The great majority of us trace our common start to the mountain man rendezvous of today, but have taken it much farther than a weekender hobby to a lifestyle we follow year round. I've made nearly all my own stuff, just because it's so expensive lol.
So, not quite what you all are doing, exactly, but we're all sharing the woods.
If you don't mind, I'll subscribe to your humor, dedication, and knowledge, along with a welcome distraction to the rigors of the everyday. Subscribed.

One of the things I love about making videos is the comments I get. I'd likely follow your path into the 1930s were it not for my metropolitan environment.
The controversy was silly, one CZcamsr attacking another about a haversack he was selling and elevating it to a level of moral turpitude and I just wanted to vent. Looks like I may have hit a nerve as its one of my most popular vids.
As far as what we're doing in the woods, we're going camping 100 years ago, that's pretty much it. And yah, lets share the woods. One of the first things Daddy taught me was "Never turn anyone away from your campfire."

I have one of WPG's Musette bags and have been using it for years. Sturdy, well built and can carry what ever a chap needs to go afield for an afternoon or weekend.
Yes, you could use it as an overnight kit. And its so frikkin cool looking.

I see an old Trapper Nelson in the background. Haversacks? They're alright for light duty and short distance travel. Mostly they're awful in steep thick mountains. I used the haversack for years underground for carrying explosive primers. In that application it's a canvas primer bag but it's really just a canvas haversack. A small pack with a chest rig is what I roll with these days.
Yep, that's an Old Trapper Nelson. You're right about the "floppyness" of a haversack when going to elevation, but you can take care of that by passing your waist belt over the haversack strap. These days, I'm Ols School more than anything else, that being pack and haversack or aluminum external frame pack. Thanks for watching!

I do find the musette to have more utility and capacity than a haversack, but haversacks seem to be the current thing in the bushcraft/woodcraft community. I'm going to build on the recent videos I did on making an Early 20th Century Commercial haversack and make one that is a bit more "musette like", along with some poke sacks to go along with it. @@sargevining Unfortunately many in the “bushcraft” community are in it for the $. There are still some purists who do not market products, but simply try to educate and communicate. “Bushcraft” (or camping/fishing/hunting as we called it when I grew up) is not a journey into living history so they should welcome whatever works best for a task.
I’m not sure the “bushcraft” legends (Nessmuk, Kephart, or Korchanski) would have turned their nose up at the musette. Mine is on order and should be here in a few days. After some real world experience I will let you know what I think about this version of a “cloth bag with a strap”. 😀
But, I live in South Texas where this time of year is very hot and very humid so it may be awhile.
@@ROE1300 While I have no real conflict with the way folks feed their family, I understand your meaning and tend to agree, although I do use this channel to let folks know about my Collector's Guide and do have a Spring Store, neither generate much income at all and I'm OK with that. If I end up with 5 bucks more at the end of the month than I had at the beginning its the same to me as if it were 500. Same thing applies to the Memberships (CZcams recommends I put a high threshold on donations, but I opted for the lowest available) the funds from which I use exclusively for small improvements and conveniences associated with video production.
Living History is a way for me to better understand what those guys were telling me. As such, I don't really practice what bushcrafting has become.
I'm sure you'll like the musette. It comes with the leather unfinished which I actually think is a good thing as it allows one to tailor the look. I used Mink Oil on mine and am more than happy with the way it turned out.

After watching a few of your videos I do have the impression your main goal is to promote products you are manufacturing & selling. Again, I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression.
@@ROE1300 I don't manufacture anything. The stuff in the Spring store is on demand printing and I've made a grand total of $15 since I launched it in April, consisting of two coffee mugs and one book. I did write the book, but its priced well below others in the genre. Making videos is almost a full-time job and right now the combination of the income from the video watch time, Spring Store, and Memberships is running at about $33.00 a month. That's not even beer money these days.
My interest is mainly in adding some bit of scholarship to an area (the History of Recreational Camping and Camping Gear of the 20th Century) that has appallingly little of it. My hope is that others watch the History of Camping Gear videos and do their own research. My goal is to have the channel make enough money to sustain repairs and replacement of the camera gear I've already purchased so that I at least break even.

Shoulder bags have been used for thousands of years. The haversack, and correct me if I'm wrong, comes from the german oat bag, which by definition of the war department would carry food and ammo.
So technically, a haversack only carries food items. I use it that way for the ONLY reason i live in bear country, and it separates my food from the rest of my gear. Would that actually help? Probably not, but it does give me peace of mind and gives me 1 place to look for everything food related.
I also have a belt system. It has 2 grenade pouches. One carries a 2-person hammock, and the other carries a tarp. They both are still grenade pouches, but so what? I don't have grenades, and they are a great size to carry my cover. What difference does it matter, if I use them to carry my hammock or somebody else uses a haversack to carry their other stuff. They are just containers. What's the big deal?

I enjoyed your video and sub to your channel. I'm not taking any sides because I think the whole situation is a ridiculous waste of time. I really don't like either "poopie head" all that much either. There is a lot of gate keeping with a lot of the guys on CZcams. I will say that I think poopie head #1 was claiming stolen valor because poopie head #2 was saying the haversack he was selling was made in the USA when it was actually made in China.

I do have a couple videos coming out on the 28th showing two different versions of haversacks that would have been used by folks in the first half of the 20th Century. As far as the "stolen valor" comment that was made, I'll say this: As a Veteran I'm of the opinion that using that term in the manner it was cheapens the meaning of the term, so I'm a bit pissed at that aspect.
Well after this sitting in my shopping cart for a couple of months I got off the fence and purchased. You had mentioned in another video that you use this to tote camera equipment. Seems just the thing to tote my 7x50 binos around. Have you felt the need to wax your bag? I end up doing alot of wet weather camping so was curious if you had felt the need to treat yours. Forgot to mention a personal opinion. Most of the folks that I've run into that bitch about stolen valor (in the context you are speaking about). Were themselves oxygen thieves while in the service.
I oiled up the leather bottom with Mink Oil and slap a bit on there occasionally (the comes "in the white" so you'll need to use whatever your favorite leather treatment is). The canvas flap is a double layer so I don't think I'd need anything more than the leather treatment, YMMV.
Yah, its good for carrying my HFG50 with the mic attached and have room for food for an overnight. I'm trying to figure out a way to use my wooden staff as a monopod so I don't have to stuff the tripod into my pack.
My take on it is if you want people to hate somebody as much as you do, accuse them of being the worst thing you can imagine, especially if your other arguments are weak.

I've seen a guy out on the trail that had a mount on top of his walking staff. then just stabbed it in the ground and used a couple of 550 guy lines staked in to stabilize it. not terribly convenient to set up but it worked. I did have a mini panic attack watching his camera perched up there but it did work. Hope you find a serviceable solution.

one comment. I ordered the musette bag from the recommended vendor. It took a long while to receive it because it came from UAE.
I generally get what I order fairly quickly. Warehousing in the UAE is what keeps the cost down. I know these are made in Pakistan. The production runs of this kind of product are relatively small, but he has a lot of stuff spanning from the 1870s-1970s, so it does require a lot of warehouse space and the market isn't sufficiently large enough to store them economically here in the States. But most of my Classic Camping kit comes from WPG, as well as reenacting gear for other impressions. Its good quality, good value, and great customer service, so I don't mind. Thanks for watching!

I still don’t understand the controversy buy my understanding is the haversack goes back to the rural south back in the early 1800s (or earlier?) where men used it as their lunch box. They carried their cornbread and pork belly out to the field for mid day snacks. The oils from the food typically saturated the bottom of the sack - so they were reinforced with leather? How does this story fit with your understanding?
Part of the controversy is the importance that some modern day bushcrafters place on haversacks. Part of it is that one CZcams bushcrafter doesn't like another CZcams bushcrafter and makes videos criticizing him. I try to avoid the whole thing by calling myself an historic campcrafter carrying a musette bag. When the video about haversacks was put out by the poopyhead, I saw the humor and foolishness of it all and had to say something, so I did.
The history of haversacks is one of those things where they've been around for so long, nobody really knows where and when they started being used. Every story I've heard makes sense to me. Differences between types and designs seem to be mostly cultural and regional. Some have the leather bottom, some do not. Some are reenforced with a double layer of material at the bottom. Some are made by folding the cloth lengthwise and sewing up the sides, others are sewn on three sides.
The bag I use is called a musette because that's what they were called by the French when doughboys first encountered them on store shelves over there. The British had been using them and calling them that for about 30 years before that. Other than that, its a haversack for all intents and purposes.

Finally, I hate the word “bushcraft”, I remember it being called woodscraft since we don’t live in Australia 🤪.
We try to limit dumb a$$ery here but have no trouble pointing it out. The problem with calling it "woodcraft" come with our entry into the internet age. If you use any search engine using the key word "woodcraft" you're going to see table saws, drill presses, planers, and the like. Using "bushcraft" at least gets you what you're looking for. As for me, I prefer "Classic Camping" because what the original writers from Nesmuk to Whelan were doing was camping. Thanks for watching!

Im not positive but i think the comparison to stolen valor was that some people were selling bags they said were usa made but were really bought from china and resold

LOL. I use a 35 liter laptop/overnighter backpack for everything. As a daily bag in the car. For day hikes. Bushcraft adventures. Overnighters at a friend's. Overnighter in the woods. And even 3 day wild camping excursions. I don't carry a laptop, but it has sections like that musette bag which make it very convenient. Sometimes I'm carrying only 5lbs of stuff. But it also carries 30lbs of camping gear/food/water with ease. The real haversack controversy should be....why use one? I respect history and tradition, but convenience trumps romanticism.
The reason I see for using a haversack (or musette in my case), is to maintain historical accuracy for practicing Living History. Otherwise, yah, use what you want. Grandma Gatewood thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail using a pillowcase.

I came across this video, and while it was informative and entertaining, I'm left completely clueless about what the "controversy" actually was. Can anyone clue me in to what the controversy being referenced was about? Was it just about the historical names of different bag designs?
I saw on another channel that what we commonly call a haversack today is quite different in design to what the oldest bags to go by that name looked like. But that video didn't make it seem controversial at all, he was just talking about the etymology and making the comparison to a later (but still old) variation of the haversack.
The poopie head likely took it down. He was attacking another CZcams who was making and selling a haversack. He made a couple snarky comments here (called me a senile old man) and took those down as well. I'm doing another video in more detail on the musette and how to treat the leather as I pack it to go on a 1930s camping trip in a couple weeks. Thanks for watching!

That bag you have doesn’t look like the one on the website, the leather strap and leather look different, the one there looks cheap, yours looks better made. Even the color of the leather looks different…
The leather comes to you "in the white", meaning there's been no treatment on the leather. This is historically accurate. I applied some mink oil to all leather parts, let it soak overnight, then applied one more treatment. If you do that with mink or neatsfoot oil, the haversack will look like mine. I think the whole thing about what people call their bags, gear and everything else is ridiculous. I use a British Osprey gas mask pouch/ field pack. It's my haversack. People complaining about the name are morons as it doesn't really matter what you call it. It's like putting limitations on a survival knife. A survival knife is any knife you deem to be a survival knife.
