Great video! I purchased my GS new in 1999 for a trip across North Africa, the year they came out, It is 24 years old and I still have it. In that time I have had 1250gs’s, Africa Twins, a KTM, an R1 and three Ducat’s BUT this is the only one I have kept all along. I really get on with the bike and it has just made me feel so connected over the years. One day I will look at it, too old to walk and far too old to ride and just reminisce!

I’ve owned my 1100GS for 28 years now (brought new) and it has 188,000 k’s on it. It’s a fantastic bike and has never let me down.
Would be great to have a sixth gear, but otherwise I just love and will never sell it.

All motorcycles should be made to fall down from time to time like this one. Without breaking apart.

I've always said the 1150GS has a seven speed gearbox with sixth missing!

I have airheads and last year production of r1100gs. I think it bridges the gap between old and new very nicely.
To me the 1100 is the best GS. Simple, reliable, powerful just enough and with very well spaced gears just like they did it in r80/100gs. No need for 6th.
It has 30% bigger clutch plate than 1150, line clutch bombproof actuation and much bigger clutch mating surface on the gearbox input shaft. All these are known 1150 weaknesses.
I also don’t care so much about the servo brakes.
Day in day out the 1100 is becoming a classic bike.
    Enjoy yours.

I'm such a big fan of the old school simple design.
I love that these bikes are just oil cooled and that you don't have the water cooling system as a failure point after a tip over or a crash.
I have had my 2003 for a year now and have taken it all over California on and off road.
Also what you said about the bikes stability at speed it so true, these bikes are the definition of confidence inspiring.
Looking forward to more of your videos on the 1150.
    Ride safe!

100 years ago, the very same people said the same about push bikes. Cycles. When the motocycle came along " it will break down, so don't use it"

I also have a r1150GS in yellow. It’s a tank. If you don’t have ABS, I highly recommend upgrading the brake lines for braided brake lines. The braking feel is fenomenal.

I like the big tourers: ST1100/1300, RT, FJR, GoldWing. After a ST1100 I got a 1150RT. In my mind a better touring bike than the ST1100, even though the V4 and the gearbox are far superior to the equivalent BMW parts. I could not understand why people use adventure bikes for big tours. So... I bought myself a 1150GS. For country lanes and commuting in the city the GS is better suited than the RT. However... if you want or need to munch miles the RT is the better bike. Wind and weather protection is second to none. Do not get me wrong, I like the GS. It is more agile, but I'm not sure I prefer it over the RT. The RT (and her competitors) also has a much more luxurious feel to it. And commuting is even easier on my 500cc maxi scooter, an Aprilia Atlantic 500 Sprint. Touring on this maxi scooter is not bad either. The only thing it lacks is image... So... I still believe adventure bikes are a bit of a hype!

Another great point is there are still plenty of parts or new parts to upgrade and the BMW forums are full of information on these bikes.

And you can install them yourself with minimum mechanical knowledge. That’s something you mostly can not do with actual 1250gs.

My 1150ADVent was built in 2003 and I bought it in 2006 with just under 6,500km on the clock. Today, 01-2024, it has around 176,000km on the clock. For me the most beautiful of the 4V GSe. I previously had the 11 GS. I won't be putting a 12er or even a 13er in my garage.

Well, as far as I know "E" stands for Economy since they did not want to use "O" or "0" for "Overdrive". Some say there is a different gear ratio while others say it is the same as when it shows the number 6 in some models. And some say that "E" may also mean "English" as in "British Motor Works":)

Nice, have the 04 80 year anniversary edition Midnight Black R1150r, best, most solid yet light as a feather bike ever. And the solid clunk of those gears!!

I prefer the 1200 oil cooled. The bike got lighter. The paralever torque arm got moved from the bottom to the top, providing more clearance. With the back seat removed, there is a flat platform across the vario panniers. Still the same reliability of the 1150 engine.

    • @75DCS
      @75DCS  Před 11 měsíci +2

I also own the oil cooled 1200. They basically added 25hp and slimmed down 25kg. That makes it a much capable bike. Cornering, accelerating and off roading are better and overall feels like a more modern machine. But I still prefer the classic 1150gs.

If you preload the gear-lever when changing into first then it won't clunk.(idling at 1100rpm) If it's running fully smoothly and I mean EXACTLY balanced, then it should not clunk when changing gear, it should slot straight in. Everyone thinks that's normal but it really isn't.

6th gear is a overdrive, you will notice the 6th gear is not really great to be in under 100km/h.

I have an old 1200 and to be honest not so sure ? Very Very heavy so not a bike for short trips 6th gear hardly ever used unles on the freeway fuel control sensor problems very very clunky gearbox lots of tappet noise even when adjusted very light front end when loaded suspension can be harsh on rough roads Seat tips you forward so long time in seat equals pain in the ass right hand heated grip seems to fail on them all I know mine is a 1200 but it is the model just after this one no abs etc etc I also find the twin engine brake is not smooth on the twisties In a nut shell if you are 6ft tall and fit they are a great bike if you are 5ft 8inches and on the older side they are not for you so dont waste your time or money I was disapointed for a bike of this value and will be going back to a reliable jap machine !!
