As a Spider-Man fan, I feel personally insulted that Mindy Kaling would claim to have been inspired by Into the Spiderverse to race-swap Velma. Miles Morales was not a race-swapped Peter Parker, he was his own Spider-Man, and Into the Spiderverse never made meta or race-based jokes to gain traction. Maybe have these youths meet shaggy and bring him out of a depression he's hit after Scooby's death. It could have cameo's of Daphne and Fred in the finale to help them further and bring a sad and lonely Velma back together with her friends. Maybe an older Scrappy becoming integrated as a more mature but still reckless trying desperately to fill in for Scooby, only to realize he can have his own role and become the new danger prone character. A MS is a character form whom the narrative bends itself over to make them appear appealing despite the context brighter justifying it or it appearing natural. @@frankwest5388 "Asshole sue" huh? Sounds about right.
To jump off your explanation, almost every character in media is going to be some paragon, be unnaturally lucky, skilled, or over all better than the rest. That is the nature of stories: A character grows to over come a final conflict. The problem with a Mary Sue is they do not grow because they don't need to. The character they are at their introduction is the character they are at the show's end. The show only pretends they grow, get better, get more skills, and develop. They don't.
Rey from the sequel trilogy is just as talented and gifted as she was at the beginning. The only thing that changes is the opportunities for her to demonstrate that. Velma is the same way. Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, all of them are identical. They do not grow, the show only pretends they do.

      close but not quite there.
The reason why MSs dont meaningfully grow most of the time is because meaningfull growth is part of the narrative and must come from making the character look unappealing at times.
A "pure" MS can be that because they must always be made appealing by the narratvie.
Now the reasonw why I wrote "pure" is because MS exist on a spectrum. Almost every major character in any at some point will have moments that could be seen as just made to look appealing by the narrative without much real reason besides that. However I dont refer to them as "pure" or "true" Mary Sues, because some instances of fun at the narratives expense wont take the audience out of the experience and often can enhance it. It only becomes a problem when it happens so much that showing off overtakes the narrative.
Velma is a "true" MS. Despite having real unapealling character flaws that she gets called out for she never gets meaninguflly challenged by the narrative, which often goes out of its way to give her the last word or reward her despite not doing anything worth praise. Like how the two hottest characters in universe just fall for her for no real reason or how she constantly insults people and doesn't even try to hide how little she thinks of everyone even by the series end, which even includes her best friends and romantic partners

@@frankwest5388 I would dispute that personally.
Mary Sues are characters that have the rules of the world bend around them for no reason other than, "They're just awesome". There are many stories where the main character is the chosen one who is fated to fight evil and save the day, stories that have characters with abilities that far exceed what most anyone can do, and stories with characters who face impossible odds and win. But these characters are not on the spectrum of Mary Sueism, because they all follow the rules of the world that they are a part of, jokes and gags aside.

    • @frankwest5388
      @frankwest5388 Před rokem

@@vallahdsacretor4839 you just agreed with me and just didnt realize it.
A Mary Sue is defined by the fact that the narrative bends itself over to promote them, not the world.
The narrative is the flow of the story and is unrelated from the limitations and rules that exist in universe.
If the events of a story happen to further a wider narrative (that being the overall story) is usually isn't about a Mary Sue, but if the events are mainly there to show off how awsome a character is, it likely is a MS moment.
Now many stories have such MS moments, where most would agree that the character isnt a Mary Sue. If done in small amounts and within the limitations of the narrative, it isn't a big deal and often helps with the narrative.
Think of all those moments in anime, where after a training arc the main characters walk into a bar and then beat up like 50 dudes to show how strong and cool they have gotten.
While primarily there to promote the character these moments in moderation do also other things, like in my previous example show how much the character has progressed on their journey of self improvement.
It only becomes a problem when those MS moments happen a lot, to the point where they overtake whatever narrative exists consitently and as such turn it into nothing more than a show off.
Things like having a grand destiny, unique super powers, multiple love intrests, a mostly strong and good moral code, being very skilled at many things, being good looking, being often if not always correct and so on are just small things that are unrealted to MSs. Sure they tend to appear as symptoms since they are vehicles through which character awsomeness usually gets shown but they aren't it.
There also are other things that while not as glamerous are also just as much symptoms of MSs. Things like being having unreasonbly many absurdly bad things happen to them for (classic for the so called Suffer Sue, since there rather than just trying to farm badassness to sell the character they try to farm pity, take the show Magical Girl Website as an example), being always mean and derogatory (subgroup called AssholeSue) and so on. Or where the entire cast just turns into unreasonable jerks just so that the MC looks better by contrast.
MSs are a symptom of writers being insecure about their work, so they want to sell you on specific details rather than let the work speak for itself. You can have blanet busting angel people in your story or tragic backstories and harems an so on, but if you just try to focus on those details of a characters as if you were to list tags rather than let those details devellop through the story, it will just drag down and ruin everything

The 2015 Mystery Inc is one of the better animated shows that I've ever watched. Mostly because it wasn't fully episodic like the rest of the series. Velma was clearly trying to ride to coattails of that. Mystery Inc alludes to Velma being a lesbian during the show's run time. It gives the characters a chance to be more than the simple archetypes that they were originally written as. Fred likes traps, and not femboys like the internet calls them, sure. However, he finds out that his parents weren't his real parents, and he actually has a stake in solving the mystery. The show takes advantage of the appeal of Daphne by having her take the stage with the Hex Girls to solve a mystery (and giving out one of the best unrequited love songs of all time in the process, seriously go check out Trap of Love). Velma isn't just incredibly intelligent, but also she was forced to learn the lore that surrounds Crystal Cove for her parent's museum. It gives her an edge when it comes to solving the mystery. Shaggy and Scooby weren't stoners, but they also weren't actively trying to use their talents to the best of their abilities.

19:00 I completely agree, seeing the old team mentoring a new team would have felt a lot more badass.
Fred was always the trap-maker, and while his traps were convoluted as all hell, they worked in the end, in one way or another. Velma was the one who was discovering the most clues and making the most deductions. Daphne was the one who had the most success in socializing with people around the mystery scene, to learn more about what was going on and who the likely culprits were. Shaggy was the bait, a disguise artist and a hell of a parkour runner with running speeds rivaling if not beating Usain Bolt. Scooby was the mascot and the center of the whole team - sure they were all friends, but first and foremost they all loved Scooby Doo. They each contributed something to the team, and each could have taught a new team their tricks. Hell, they could even have Scrappy Doo be the new team's mascot.
I can picture adult Fred teaching them about planning and executing a trap, how his traps work, referencing specific traps that he used in the past, etc. Daphne teaching them how to get the most out of people who don't want to talk, and listen to subtle cues in their dialogue. Velma teaching them how to examine a room and what to look for, as well as what environmental clues could tell you about what happened. Shaggy could even be the sports teacher at the school, and be the one who has a close connection to the new team, and teach them how to use their environment to effectively run from a criminal while also staying on track with a planned trap. Scooby Doo could be old by now, and not that great of a runner, but a moral compass for the new team, and a mentor to Scrappy, teaching him how to keep his friends together and make sure they don't take themselves too seriously.
I love imagining that, and I hate that it didn't happen.

I'm glad Warner didn't let Kaling drag Scooby into this *&^%show. They'd have made him an unlikeable jerk as well. And that's my biggest problem with _Velma_ : everyone's a selfish jerk who discards people as soon as they've outlived their usefulness, even Norville. The character of Velma gets it the worst out of anyone, including Fred, because she's shown to be a self-obsessed, sociopathic psychopath, who only cares about herself and her interests, including not caring who she hurts to get her way. And for some reason, everyone in the town follows what she says and ends up doing what she says to do, and the two central guys both end up simping for her hard. These aren't friendships or healthy relationships, they're users. People who discard and draw people based on how useful they are.
The next problem I have with _Velma_ is the obsessive sexualization of 15- and 16-year-olds, mostly girls. I have nieces and nephews who are teens and older, so this sort of treatment towards these kids disgusts me. It also doesn't show any respect for them, and it focuses on things that should be irrelevant to the story, and makes creeps out of the characters enjoying it. None of this had to happen, but then Kaling did say she wanted to 'explore the urges of teenagers' or some &^%$ like that. Sounds creepy to me. Did you know that in December 2019, _Rurouni Kenshin_ creator Nobuhiro Watsuki was arrested for possession of child pornography, because in Japan, possession on its own is illegal? After all, buying said material creates more demand, and in order to fill that demand, the people making the videos make more, and to do that, they have to make more victims. Harm is caused. Fortunately Watsuki helped the authorities on their case in cracking the porn ring, and he did community service. What else he did was kept quietly under wraps, and he was allowed to return to work once the authorities had determined he had served his time. So... what should the purveyors of _Velma_ have to do to redeem themselves for creating this animated child porn, I ask you? Yes, they're older than the kids in _Cuties_ , and animated, but it's still disgusting. Especially if it encourages people to creep on kids and/or teens. This sort of thing simply needs to stop, and yet I have a sinking feeling there will be more.
Next, the racism. _Velma_ spends a considerable amount of time attacking white men, but they are not the show's only targets, merely the most frequent targets. Through her character, Mindy verbally attacks Asians, Lesbians, Adults who watch animation, MeToo... basically everyone represented in the show, and some not in it. The show's representations of different groups are not flattering either: As a Black man, Norville is shown leaving his supposed girlfriend and child, and he obsesses endlessly about Mindy's character when all she does is disgusting things. Even Indians, Mindy's own, aren't free of being shown in a poor light, as Mr. Dinkley is shown to be unfaithful, and frequent strip clubs, and deal in drugs. Mrs. Dinkley is a victim to Mindy's character's violence and abuse, and then she disappears, only to reappear as the villain's pawn. Nobody in this show is shown in a positive or heroic light, leaving the potential audience with nobody to root for or hold up as someone whose behaviour they would want to mimic. And because _Velma_ attacks so many people, audience members might feel attacked as well. And it's all presented as okay, even applaudable, because... it comes from a minority, I guess? Being in a minority does not give one license to be a jerk or a sociopath, though, something Mindy apparently doesn't know anything about.
One of the episodes even makes the point that all Mindy has to do is dress as a man to get what she wants and do what she wants, but how is that different from what she was already doing? Also, this episode shows Daphne getting drunk, despite being a minor. And it still manages to get worse. In another episode, a bunch of the teens are pinned by a rock, and Mindy thinks that if the rest of them just let themselves be crushed by the rock, she might be able to get free and live, which she says she should... because she's overweight. Of course none of the others want to die, so they fall the rest of the way into the hole, and survive anyway. And 'Velma's' supposed to be the smart one.
In fact she's not shown to be smart at all. Clues have to be suggested by other characters, or fall right into her lap for her to consider them. If she's the smartest person in town like she wants others to believe she is, it's only by the 'virtue' of everyone being dumber than her. It reminds me of the episode of _ReBoot_ where Enzo wishes he was the smartest sprite in Mainframe, only for everyone's clock speeds to get reduced to below his. The difference between Enzo and Mindy is Enzo realizes how bad it is to have everyone be dumber than him, and rights the mistake. Mindy never corrects hers. She never even accepts responsibility for her mistakes, which end up resulting in several deaths and ruined families. She never gets any consequences leveled against her either, because she's writing the show, so why would she let anything bad happen to her? Everyone else can be miserable when they're trying to get away from her, but she always has to be at the center of everything that's presented as good.
And the calling tropes out bit is meaningless if you fall into them anyway.
Clearly I don't get what Mindy was after, especially considering she has a highly successful career in television. I'm guessing she wanted to make a show like _Riverdale_ , thus highschool, but then there are so many unnecessary things in this show, including the attachment to the _Scooby Doo_ franchise. An original show would have been free of any such attachments, and then Mindy could do whatever and not be judged based on faithfulness to her own series. But she went with this.
And the thing is, I'm not even hate-watching _Velma_ . I got as far as the roaches. Everything else I know about it come from various reviews. I knew even before _Velma_ started throwing hands at people outside of white men, patriarchy, and _Scooby Doo_ that this series was not for me. How much more must those insulted by _Velma_ know this? Oh well. This is a thing that happened. Money was spent on it.
Honestly, I only feel bad for the animators. They put real effort into this.

This touches on a hypothesis I have on part of why anime feels different from 'western' cartoons. The Idea in 'the west' that cartoons are for children has resulted in an artificial bifurcation of 'western' animation where sex, gore, dark/complex subjects, and crude humor are crammed into 'adult' cartoons where it feels like the creators over compensate. While said idea did take root the same way in Japan leading to a more organic maturity gradient

Mystery Inc, a cartoon for teenagers, was more high brow than Velma, an Adult cartoon.

19:10 THATS THE EXACT IDEA I HAD IN MIND. I was thinking maybe that the original scooby doo gang thought that it was time for a new generation of mystery solvers to take their place and maybe own some sort of myster solving academy where students can learn how to solve mysteries from the one and only scooby doo gang. Not only would it shine a new light of personalities and abilities for how mysteries would be solved but also see our beloved characters teach others the ropes on how it’s done. I feel like that would be heart warming to see scooby being some sort of school mascot while shaggy rambles on about food while teaching the kids and Fred just going on about different types of traps.

    Possible conspiracy theory:
The Real reason Scooby wasn't in the show was because the shitty show they wrote didn't have a dog.
Velma wasn't a Scooby Doo show. It has nothing to do with Scooby Doo beyond a few side references.
Then when it became incredibly obvious that this terrible, hateful, unfunny, garbage show wasn't going to sell to ANYONE on earth (Not even the people who made it, they're too busy jerking off to a mirror), so they changed some names and got a license so they could get some nostalgia, and, primarily, hateviews.
And... It's apparently worked. Really well. Everyone is watching this show to shit on it.
I'm sure it won't last. But short term (And that's all executives care about) it had great viewer count.

I’ve realized a thing that kinda irks me: Velma said her mom was missing for two years. However, her dad’s gf Sophie said that they got into a relationship six weeks after Diya went missing. Afterwards resulting in Sophie getting pregnant. And Diya was only discovered about a week after Amanda was born! So either Sophie and Amon were together for an unmentioned 14 months before deciding to have a baby despite Velma mentioning how it basically happened not long after they got together, or the writers just completely oversaw how that line from Sophie kinda ruins the continuity of the show.
