    The "Kohitsu Shosha" literally means the hard-pen penmanship. The pencil was designed for that purpose for elementary school kids and skilled adults. The soft lines rendered from the pencil enable the brush-stroke like expression which is essential for good Japanese and Chinese hand written characters. I use some of these for drawing pictures, though. It's good to explore new application of the pencil.

    Great review! Now that it’s 2022, would you consider doing this again with all of your high end pencils??? I’d like the new Matte Faber-Castell added please. I’m looking for the the darkest most Non-Scratchy pencils I can find. I have MS. Textures of paper and scratchiness of pencils have become extremely important to me! While you were testing it, the Pacific Art lead holder seemed the smoothest. Was it? Thanks so much!

    all great pencils so it's down to price and value for money, thanks for the test review

      I have a different take on that. For value, I have been impressed with the Staedtler Norica (black - US) pencil until they apparently changed their 2014 formula. So once my 2014's run out, I probably won't buy them anymore unless they return to the better formula (which they currently deny was changed, although the evidence is in the writing and feel). But price and value is not everything. The Blackwings give me my greatest JOY factor, and they are among the pricey pencils (just a tad below $2 per pencil). They're beautiful and write heavenly. So for me, I will pay for a nice look and write/feel, and also enjoy the cheapest priced pencils that also write great but may not have that great look/feel. A really inexpensive yellow pencil (Musgrave 909 Ceres) is a great pencil but looks like every other yellow pencil. So it's good to enjoy both sides.

    Trying doing a video going from the darkest going to the lightest gradation. Really would like to see the "Range" of value to see. I know with the soft core the graphite will be really grainy showing the grain of the paper. Just going over in a blob I dont think you can see what the pencils can actually do. Just a suggestion.. Thanks!

      @RixCanDoit  Před 8 lety +1

      With the 6B pencils they are usually relegated to putting down the darker values leaving the harder pencils for lighter gradations. If I do another 6B type video I'll incorporate a "range" test as well. Thanks for your suggestion!

    i can't find these exact pencils in Amazon, just the hexagonal ones.

    • @jamesaritchie1

      Because many think the more expensive something is, the better it is, and sales numbers prove this. If I make a product, whatever it is, I'm going to price it where I can make the most profit. People love Caran d'Ache colored pencils, and they cost a fortune. So why would they not pay a lot for the graphite pencils?

    This is going to sound so stupid but I have that same sharpener and it just, like…stopped sharpening my pencils? I’m aware it’s machined aluminum. It’s the weirdest thing. I live in a cold climate so maybe the molecules shrink slightly and messed with the shape? I’m very confused, it worked great for a week and now none of my pencils fit in it. The wood side barely shaves off the leading edge of a new pencil and the lead side is too small and doesn’t fit any of my pencils anymore. Like I said it used to work and it’s metal, so like, what the hell right??? It’s the same exact one as your video with the plastic case, blue removable piece and the black mini slip case with the red KUM logo. I’m perplexed

    The best pencil in the world is whichever pencil a given artist prefers. Every brand has its fans. I even know sveral professional artists who prefer cheap Chinese pencils, and I don't blame them a bit. The absolute best, smoothest, most perfectly toned HB pencil I've ever used was a handout from a church group that passed through ther neighborhood. Had the name and address of the church on it.
    The absolute best, smoothest, most perfectly toned 2B pencil I've ever used is a standard university student pencil in China. It cost less than a nickel at the time.
