Mitsubishi 9000 HB Pencil Review

  • This Mitsubishi 9000 HB is a lean, green, writing machine. It is packaged by the dozen in a gold colored box with a cut-away that allows you to see the two-toned green pencils within. The fit and finish of these pencils are of the highest quality, which is amazing considering they are not an overly expensive instrument. These pencils do not have attached erasers, as with most Japanese pencils, but they do sharpen beautifully and literally glide over the paper with a lush and silky stroke. The box says they are for "General Writing' and there is an imprint on each pencil that says "Made by elaborate process," which I must believe is true because they are a delight to use. This is an example of a pencil - and fortunately for me there are many others, as well - that make you want to write for the sheer joy and pleasure of pushing the pencil across the paper.
SMUDGE TEST: very low | low | moderate | moderate plus | high
I did not do an on-camera smudge test for the Mitsubishi 9000 pencil, but this pencil showed a low graphite smudge.

To paraphrase Steven Wright - I only use general writing pencils 'cause I'm not writing anything specific.

I have the Mitsubishi 9000 in 2B. I got it as part of a 2B sampler pack, though, so I only have one and I've not used it much. But whenever I do use it, I love it.

HighWideandHandsome - I think the Mitsubishi pencils overall are very high-quality. Glad you love using your 2B!

Sounds nice and smooth when you're writing with it. Very pretty and well made pencil, like the Staedler Mars or Faber 9000. Came to be in your hand by elaborate process, too.

Hi davek12! Yes, ultra smooth pencil and the paint job on these is really beautiful. A joy to write with and hold. Thanks!

This is currently my favourite pencil! I lean toward pen when I write, so I use this for drawing and making lists or "notes to self" throughout the day. At first I was turned off by the way the point dulls more rapidly than I'm accustomed to. However, now I see this as a perk and actually prefer it pretty dull. It's what I'm inclined to describe as "brush like" in the way it marks. I understand they make this model in grades other than HB, but as of yet I have not had the pleasure of trying those. What pencils are at the top of your list these days?

Hi toonz! I share your enthusiasm for this pencil! It is one that I find myself using often. Actually, almost any of the Mitsubishi pencils are really nice to write with, so it's hard to pick one that I like the best. I also like the Kitaboshi pencil, and currently I'm using the Musgrave Tennessee Round pencil and loving it. Thanks!

Traditional Japanese calligraphy is done with a brush, and favours soft strokes with different levels of applied pressure, so it's certainly fitting to describe Mitsubishi pencils (as well as other Japanese brands') as brush-like. I always describe soft pencils and pacer leads the same way, "brush-like".

Hi Hugo. The 9000 and the 602 are both incredible instruments, but to me they are different. In my opinion, the 9000 is a bit darker, softer and smoother. It feels closer to a Blackwing Pearl, to me, than to a 602. Thanks!
