    I'm Catholic and I love this song. When we sing it at Mass it's one of the few times I just belt out a hymn. It's wonderful, and classic. It makes me happy that Catholics and Protestants can both enjoy this wonderful praise to God. And yes, atheists/agnostics/malcontents/non-believers, I know it's set to Beethoven's Ode to Joy. I think we all can enjoy the beauty of the music. Can't we?

    To all those complaining that this is not the origional words to Ode to joy, you are in fact correct, the song is title "Joyful Joyful, we adore thee" The Ode to joy in parentheses is all about the music the words are sung over

    • @barrowisp
      @barrowisp Před 8 lety +5

      Yes, it's a separate poem that is often set to the melody of Beethoven's 9th but is not intended to be a translation of the German "An die Freude." To those complaining that it's not as good as the German... well, it's more accessible to non-Germans and I consider it a good thing for helping more people to be able to participate in the singing

    Not the original lyrics, but it’s still beautiful and Beethoven would hopefully be proud that his music is still alive today.

      Of course, it's original lyrics are in German and it's part of a orchestral symphony, it's melody was extracted and added to hymn books, transposed to other instruments like organ/piano.
      It was even used in my Jr High School 104 during graduation, with the words changed for that, and all I remember was part of the words were "...104 we honor you"

    For not being the actual translation of Ode an die Freude this was quite nicely done.

    This is not a christian song, why have they changed it to be so in this poor translation? Who are they to improve upon Beethoven?

      Poor or not, it's actually nice to sing along to.
      You're not Hindu or Arab, but that doesn't prevent you from using Arabic numerals in your daily life.

    • @ohara411
      @ohara411 Před 9 lety +9

      runeworldd Beethoven didn't write the words. The words are from a poem written by Friedrich Schiller. Whether or not it was a Christian poem, Beethoven approved of the Christian version.

    • @falmousec456
      @falmousec456 Před 9 lety +3

      ohara411 Also take note that the lyrics above is not the same as to the poem written by Friedrich Schiller. It is by Henry van Dyke, and Beethoven did not approve it since he had been long dead before him!

    • @graup1309
      @graup1309 Před 8 lety +1

      +ohara411 it was not a christian poem. the main message is that joy's magic binds again,what fashion devided this refers to the situation in the late 18th century when the French revolution happened and there was a big gap between nobles, people living in cities and and peasants. this also showed by the clothing. I don't know about other countries in Europe, but in germany, the society was split into a lot of groups that hardly interfered with each other, you could see, what ones job was by his clothing. Schiller had pretty modern ideas and maybe was one of the first persons to consider themselves as 'European'.

    • @partialintegral
      @partialintegral Před 8 lety +1

      +Graup This is NOT a translation by any means (a really good poem though), but the original "Ode to Joy" was Christianity-flavored. E.g.:
      Wine and kisses past all measure,
      And a proven friend we laud,
      Even worms may share in pleasure,
      And the Cherub faces God.
      or
      Rescue from the chains and wailing;
      To the villain bear no grudge!
      Hope to those on deathbeds ailing,
      Mercy from the final Judge!
      Soon the dead from death be riven.
      Drink and sing, let spirit soar!
      Sinners shall be all forgiven;
      Hell at last shall be no more.
