One thing I definitely love about old movies is they always kept you guessing how they did it. It was like a magic trick. And sometimes they actually had no choice but to build a HUGE set like that! Now it's all just CGI, so a lot of the magic is gone.
I have been telling everyone to watch this. This is where you shine taking us on your 'splores to show us the marvels we would miss! I look forward to my Spring So Cal trip to touch on this stuff with my own eyes. I love your gifts to us. Thanks.
Cool that they recreated part of the Babylon set in the mall. FUN FACT....There is supposedly an entire huge movie set buried in the dunes of northern Santa Barbara from Cecil B. Demille's movie Ten Commandments from 1923. They have excavated part of it.
TheDailyWoo Yes please do a vlog on that, that would be amazing!! I love Film History, study it as a hobby, and I especially love your Film History Location vlogs Adam. :)
Yeah those are at the Oceano Dunes between Vandenberg and Pismo beach. When I lived in Santa Maria I used to visit that area often, quite remote and beautiful. Huell even did a show from there focusing mainly on the old TC film. Great movie history.
I've stood in that same spot looking at the Hollywood sign. Never would of known the history of that. This is why I love your channel Adam! Keep making videos!
Hi from Weymouth, UK. Great vid! I walked through there on my last visit to the US and i thought it reminded me of something! In one of your scenes you showed a movie house showing 'Dunkirk'.... Many of the locations for the movie were shot right here in Weymouth, Dorset, UK!! I am a loyal subscriber and have been for a long time... Great adventures and keep on keeping on... You are doing a great job recording vanishing history...Cheers...
I use to live just 10 minutes walking distance away from the Vista Theater. it's the place I got to see all the big 90s Blockbusters with my dad haha There is so much Hollywood movie history in just that small neighborhood on Virgil and Vermont. Lots of those homes were built during the golden era of Hollywood and my dad being such a movie buff told me about the sets built in that location. I was quite disappointed when Disney removed the D.W Griffith elephants from the entrance of the Hollywood Backlot in Dca. Great vlog my friend, it brings back a lot of memories. 😊
Wow another Hollywood legend that I've always wanted to visit! These videos really are a treat man. I hope you're enjoying making them as much as we're enjoying watching them! I miss LA. I will hopefully be back in October!
Hi Adam, Thanks for sharing your adventures in America, I learn something new every day. keep on keeping on, All the best from the misty mountains of Wales.
This was outstanding!! I've been to the mall and always wondered about the architecture. I never saw the plaque. Thank you for doing this episode. Time to find a copy of Intolerance and check it out.
Mind Blown! :-O I stayed at an Old Hollywood themed hotel around the corner from that shopping center a couple years ago doing a "Old Hollywood" Girls weekend and had no idea when we walked through that shopping center how much it actually fit with what we planned! The great thing about following on with your adventures, learning such cool things!!! Thank you for sharing this bit of Hollywood history!
Very cool video Adam. Intolerance is one of my favorite silent films, when you first see the Babylon set in the film , it's still quite an astonishing visual experience ,to this day. It's so gigantic looking. Thanx Mr.the Woo. Bob.G
I finally found this video after an hour of searching. I was reading up on lost silent-era films and and remembered Adam doing this video. I dont watch Adam the woo videos as much just due to time but I forgot all the cool things he introduced me to. Thanks Adam.
Hey, Adam, thanks for highlighting this film, and its lasting impact. This vlog motivated me to seach out relating material online. I just watched a short review of Intolerance by Orson Welles. Great stuff! Perhaps you can do a vlog highlighting Orson's impact on Hollywood. He was a creative genius and pretty colorful guy.
Adam you just blew my mind with this video!! I've lived in la my whole life, I've gone to Hollywood in that plaza so many times and never knew why they built it like that! Thank you Adam!!👏🏻👍🏻
So cool. I heard that they found some of the original architectural elements buried in the desert some years ago. Love the Hollywood history. Keep em coming. Thanks Adam
Wow! Adam that was very interesting. I'm loving the Hollywood history vlogs, keep it up! I've been to that shopping center many times yet had no clue of its design inspiration. Thank you for enlightening us!
Superb job Woo-Man! You're back in the groove. Personally I like it when you "fly" solo free from others "popping in" who may be a distraction from an otherwise nice flowing vlog.
I've lived in Southern California all my life, and lived pretty close to Hollywood and Highland for a while and I never knew about why that shopping center looks like this. Thank you for this knowledge.
I have enjoyed your videos and adventures, Adam. I have been following your daily vlogs since November 2014. Actually I bumped into you 3 times in one day but was embarrassed to say hi. Keep on trekking Mister!
I lived in LA for a while, frequented that place many times because i loved the arch. But totally didnt know that backstory! Thank you for sharing, interesting stuff!!
I was just reviewing photos of when I visited this shopping plaza a few years ago. I had no idea of the connection to the movie set. Thanks for posting and I want to return.
It's amazing how many lil placers and signs are put in in areas to point out any historical content or event and how many people pass by and never realize where they are. I always try to look around for such things when out and about. So much history all around. Still diggin the LA videos, so much history in the area. Truly understand ya planting feet there, to be selfish I wish it was Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge as we visit there often and would have loved to run into ya some day, plus ya always find neat little gems of areas. Hopefully ya might be on a road trip the end of September and be in the area. lol
sorry so late for some reason i had to ring the youtube bell again, I was wondering why i haven't seen you in the bell notification today. long one today, acting away, overcast with 1000 or more to cast hmmm how unique, nice history on the old sets there
Hello Adam Great Vlog !!! The other day you ask for suggestions of what kind of I would be interested in the vlogs I like are Vlogs that give that Credit to Something Someone Did In The Past That Makes Us Go "That was Something I can Pass On".Again this one was WELL DONE,Now you can go home and sleep well!
Very cool, Adam. Was in that mall before and recognized it as being different than most but didnt know the reason. My favorite short story is by Ray Bradbury. Its about people that pay to hunt geneticly modified animals that can fight back, like squirrels that carry little grenades and dogs that carry and bury land mines. Vlog on!
I didn't know that there were places on the Boulevard with no stars!! Learn something new everyday. This waa a very interesting video! Liked it very much!!!
What's the story Morning glory? Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs! Maybe it will rain boiled peanuts and Mountain Dew! Very interesting vlog today, Enjoyed it!
I have been to L.A. Once, and I took a picture of that area. I was actually looking for a good picture of the Hollywood sign while riding around. I saw that area thought it was cool so I took a picture. Later on after getting back home I was downloading the pictures on my computer when I realized that I did get the Hollywood sign in with it. Now I know a little about the history on that now. Thanks Adam
everytime you walk in that theater/mall area i get flashbacks from when we worked as caterers for things like the academy awards years ago back when it was Kodak Theater. It was both interesting and interesting at times but it paid the bills. Later on I worked on some projects like setting up the light cycle for display at the Tron Legacy premiere at the El Capitan Theater. I remember that night very well because I had to run back and forth from the Disney Theater across the red carpet up to the top floor of that mall area with the elephants are where the Tron after party was being held to check on some Nokia phone displays make any adjustments then run back down to the theater to wipe off any greasy fingerprints on the light cycle and displays down there, well this went on all night. The guests looked like they enjoyed the night but I couldn't wait to go home and crash for the rest of the week. Another sweet video =)
WOW! I didn't know any of that! Thank you Adam! So interesting! One of my best girlfriends has a place over there, you can see the Hollywood sign from her patio =) I'm going over Thurs morning, we are gonna work out together. Hollywood is exciting enough, now you're there too?! LOL I just Love it =)
Oh Dude, so glad you corrected the record on this. So many vloggers swear uphill and down that the mall site is where the movie was filmed and I comment, No, that is all the way down beyond Vermont where Sunset and Hollyweird Blvd cross. The stories and info I could tell you about the old Hollywood Oy Vey! I🤣 lived in H'wood proper at the Hollywood Tower Aptmnts from 1973 to 1975 and then in NoHo untill 1987. I was always touring on the weekends looking for old movie set locations. I worked in Century City and back in the day, if you went to the parking structure behind the Century Plaza Hotel, right there, right behind the parking garage was the arm from the Statue of Liberty and the setpiece for the subway for Planet of the Apes I and II. I hope you read this! Keep doing what you're doing, you are setting the record straight!
The weird thing is, I think my parents and I got parking in this same shopping area when we were going to see the Chinese Theatre and Hollywood walk of fame. I remember marvelling at how beautiful it looked. Nice to now know the history behind it.
GREAT JOB ADAM!! Very enjoyable!! How about doing some history of Harold Loyd. I saw the silent film Speedy here on CZcams. Hilarious!! Plus he did some amazing stunts on another film in and around Hollywood I think. Anyway- would love to see some history on him and his films.
Thank you for covering this, since playing the game LA Noire, I've always wanted to know more about that movie set. I did a little internet research a few years back but never went and visited. I don't know if you remember? but DCA used to have smaller versions of the elephants at the entrance to the hollywood section of the park.
One thing I definitely love about old movies is they always kept you guessing how they did it. It was like a magic trick. And sometimes they actually had no choice but to build a HUGE set like that! Now it's all just CGI, so a lot of the magic is gone.
Adventures by George dude, i totally agree with you. I miss that "magic" that old movies had.
Adventures by George I agree
Jose De La Rosa We would all get along really well if we ever got together and had a Woo party!! I feel the same way
"Party!!!" Wait, I mean, "Marty!!!!" ;-)
Tampa Jay A Woo Party would be soooo dope 👍🏼👍🏼
