- A group of students whose community was devastated by the Maui wildfires were given that chance through the Tomodachi Initiative to get inspired by another community that emerged from tragedy.

I am both from Hawaii and a Japanese American. This truly inspired me I am so glad stories like these get covered. We need more kindness and hope in the world.

I love both, Japan and Hawaii. to of the most beautiful places in the world.
There were also many there who were apartment dwellers and we'll probably not ever be able to move back there again not into that part of town where they lived and where they had their friends .
And everyone knows it's going to be much more expensive to move back there once it's rebuilt ... again many of these were average people when it comes to salaries and they will not be able to afford to live there and I'm sure their children are overhearing these conversations from the parents .
It sounds like the Japanese were fortunate enough to have decent government and other entities that facilitated for these people to be able to move back home and to resume their lives .
Regrettably from what I've been seeing and reading since shortly after the fires I don't believe there is a lot of Hope for the majority of people from Lahaina who lost their homes .
Aside from the initial tragedy of all the deaths and serious injuries there is the other tragedy of the displacement of those who loved their their community in Lahaina ... and will never have it like that again😢😢😢

On the Peter Santinello channel , a couple from Lahaina were unterviewed .
While it was a very good interview , very revealing , I don't believe the couple represented the norm in Lahaina as they also owned two small businesses at the time of the fires . ( even though they did lose both businesses to the fires ) .
I appreciate this Outreach from these wonderful people from Japan but I don't think they understand the corruption the people of Lahaina are facing .
Many of their parents will never be able to rebuild .
Some of the ones who are indigenous Hawaiians lived on properties that were in their families for generations ... and sometimes did not even have a deed or title for the house or the land even though they had always lived there .
The governor changed the laws there about a month before the fires to where those laws are a disadvantage for the people who were living there and lost everything ... or most of what they had .
A lot of these High school-age kids know what's going on because their parents inform them and regrettably a lot of them have seen the hope their parents had in the beginning , dwindle .
People there are being forced to continue to pay mortgages on homes that aren't even there anymore !

Of course they are getting a break most of them on how long they can go before they have to pay their mortgages and I think it was 9 months ... ?
But now a lot of these people are going to be paying mortgages on houses that aren't even there while trying to pay rent or mortgages on new places .
Most of these people were not making a lot of money .
Many are going to lose what they had and will never be able to recover.
