"This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he's a skilled human". Literally me every time I try to explain Kyo to anyone who will listen ahaha Ty for this! â„
I love Dir en Grey, but a lot of fans tend to forget (as great as a vocalist as he is) he didn't always use proper vocal technique... He's been in and out of the hospital for damaging his vocal chords multiple times when he was younger, not to mention back in 2013 He was diagnosed with tonsillitis, and in 2009 with chorditis and laryngeal edema. But every time he got out of the hospital, his voice became stronger and he continues to take better care of himself.
Do you know if he is better at taking care of his voice nowadays? When was the last time he was very soar or admitted to hospital? I worry now and then that he might overuse his voice and damage it really bad, but most vocalists manage to come back after surgery or a longer break, though. He puts a lot of strain on his voice while performing live. And several times you can hear that he really struggles. It's been like that for many years. Been a fan since 2008.
Everyone should see them live, like for real, I saw them 4 times and it's never enough. Kyo is amazing, I often forget to jump and shit and just stand there, mesmerized by his voice. He is a superhuman for sure.
yo it's an experience. I've caught them in Chicago literally every time they've been there, ever since Korn brought them this side of the pond for Family Values.
Really liked this video! I would love to see you react to "Vinushka" by Dir en grey! He shows so many different vocal styled in that song. Keep it up!
YES YES YES
Agreed. Only that she would listen to it would make me happy.
Oh yes Vinushka is combining everything, so you should listen to that! But there are different versions.
lol you beat me to it, I was like why did they pick this song, Vinushka would have been way better for someone to look at Dir en grey objectively in the their prime. I still think Uroboros was their magnum opus.
Ryoko Blackheart agreed. Itâs definitely my favorite album by them
I've always said that Kyo simply consideres his voice to be another instrument and has learned to master it. His vocal range has improved tremendously over the years. I mean, just compare Gauze and The Insulated World!
Dir en grey - Rinkaku, Diablos, Macabre. Also Kyo's lowest note recorded without fry is A1, his highest without falsetto was a G#7. With fry he's hit as low as G1, and with falsetto he's hit as high as C9 (debated because it was a whistle note, but it counts in my book).
The G#7 is also debatable as it wasn't held for very long, seems like a 1 time thing so far, other than that his highest non inhale is E6
The G#7 was recorded, it's on Rotting Root. The C9 was during a live performance of Reiketsu Nariseba, and like I said, debated because it was definitely a whistle note, either way, that is still insanely high.
@@xerodelacroix5552 yes but the G#7 like I said was only a 1 time thing and can't really be considered into his official range but real none the less, also the C9 was more than likely an inhale which in sure you know don't count towards range.
He hit higher than the G#7 on some live versions of Dozing Green on the ending screams, before they played it like they do now where he inhales them. And that's why I said he's hit as high as C9 WITH FALSETTO, I know that doesn't count towards range, even though not counting outside melodic range is ridiculous, considering female singers allegedly don't even have a falsetto range (they do). Doesn't change the fact his melodic range is A1-G#7, which is absolutely insane for a male singer. Mike Patton, Axl Rose and Devin Townsend are the only ones who come close.
@@xerodelacroix5552 oh yeah, it is still impressive.
oh my god i never expected a vocal coach to react to diru. i've always said that kyo is an absolute vocal gymnast; the kinds of things he can do with his voice are downright incredible and sometimes unbelievable.
Kyo and Mike Patton are the two most versatile male singers ever.
I'm Glad to see someone that's thinks like me. Respect.
ruki gazette, d asagi, kamijo versailles , jupiter former member vocals (zin) current vocals Kuze, galenryus vocals Ono Masatoshi
@@uwuloluwu dont agree with Kamijo as a big Versailles fan, he has a good voice but its no where on the level of Kyo. Ruki is really good but again not Kyo level, his growls and higher notes are not as strong. I might add Freddie Mercury instead his range is very good
Versatile but kyo has not control nor limits himself. He destroys his voice constantly
Hmmmm....... Shit... Kyo, Patton, Mercury... I want to throw maybe Rob Halford or Roberto Luciano in there... Prince, oh yeah and the singers from CrotchDuster... Other than that I don't believe a lot of male singers have really explored as much as Patton & Kyo... Maybe Hevy Devy counts? He's got some range and technical skill. Unless you wanna get into technicality then Rahzel fits in there too.
Edit: I forgot about Vitaz and Chino Moreno...maybe Ville from H.I.M.?
"Performance art" Yeah, that sums up everything I've seen and heard from Dir En Grey
Mad respect for reacting to something so unique! I'll go check out more from this band, there's something there that moves me...
Here are more, if you wanna give them a try
This one was used in one of the saw movies

Try Rinkaku and Macabre(the live versions).
JUST GIVE THE GuY EVERY SONG XD. Dir en grey IS TOO GOOD
The best about him as a singer is that he doesn't really care about vocal techniques. Everything he does comes from emotions and his drive to create something new.
I really liked your reaction, your fascination, that you took him seriously and "he's terrifying".
Doesn't care about vocal techniques? I haven't watched any interviews but I'm pretty sure he could not pull this off without an extreme amount of prepared techniques. Imho Kyo has the emotion there but also excellent technique to back it up
TheJigsaw155 itâs what he said, he also stated he didnât do lessons.
Kyo is a vocal god. His vocal range is insane and his vocal control is top notch. Their isn't many better, guy is in a league of his own.
Finally!!!! Kyo what a beast and angel at the same time.
Excellent choice in music, here Kyo shows so many versions of himself in the voice. Amazing and so funny seeing your reaction.
kyo's become a real champ at death growls
mah boyyyy
The fact you just did a video on Dir en Grey has earned my full support. I think you would appreciate Rinkaku.
I heard alot of metal, rock, and hardcore songs and for me kyo is one of the most talented metal singer. His skills and techniques are so incredible!
thank you for analyzing KYO he really deserves more recognition! cant wait to finally hear him live in March. The new Dir en Grey album is another work of art!
Finally, a Dir En Grey reaction video thatâs not just people being grossed out by their top few music videos!
My absolut favorite band
It's because they are geniuses and poets, man. The best.
Wow, i really liked your video! I'm super happy that you reacted to Dir En Grey! Please, if possible, take a look at another of their songs.
See yaa
Kyo's voice is so versatile, and it's amazing how he's doing so well even after the vocal issues he faced in his past!
I'd definitely recommend reacting to their song Vinushka. It's masterpiece itself.
As far as live performances, Uroko is one of the best when it comes to vocal diversity in a song, as well as Revelation of Mankind, Rinkaku, Different Sense, and a lot more.
One of my favorite live performances of them was the symphonic version of Lotus. Zakuro, Riyuu, Ware Yami Tote, and more; they're more of the pretty songs and are just as amazing.
Anyways I love your videos. Got a new sub :)
One of best vocalist in metal genre. Kyo is beast!
Kyo is a monster, master of his voice.
No words to describe it.
I think the best way to describe Kyo is the only singer that can terrify you enough to haunt your nightmares but also sing you into the most delightful sleep you ever had.
Yes!
I've been trying to sell my friends on this band since 2003 and it's weird seeing them on a show like this. I wouldn't normally watch it but Kyo has a vocal range that I've never seen before so I was excited to see it examined. Thank you and please do more Dir en grey.
Hello darling,
Please. Do. More. Diru.
Vinushka. Macabre. Tousei. All of their songs TBH
Thank you.
Yes please more diru live songs
Kyo is one of my all-time favorite vocalists. He's simply excellent.
Especially tousei, my favorite to date
vinushka is so emotional got make me cry.
Holy craps!!! A Dir En Grey reaction. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I absolutely love your voice. I could listen to you talk all day đ
That aside Dir En Grey is definitely not everyoneâs cup of tea, but I love how objective you are when reacting to videos that may not be a style that you would typically listen to. Keep it up!
I mean with songs like Obscure, they're most definitely not everyone's cup of tea, I mean Magayasou, there's a lot of switching and shows of a lot of skill, but Obscure is like nightmare fuel for normies.
Thank you for this. Kyo is AMAZING!!! I really like this channel.
Saw this in my recommendation, guess cause I love jrock and vkei. Glad you're checking Dir En Grey out. Kyo is one of the greatest vocalists this world has ever seen imo. His talent is immeasurable. You'd be blown away by how many Japanese bands try to imitate his vocal style daily.
It's always such a pleasure watching open-minded people react to Dir En Grey
Love your reaction and subscribed!!!
Please do a lot more of them and their vocalist because DIR EN GREY is a very avant - garde / experimental group, they play death metal, progressive metal, nu metal, alternative metal, and many more so you can see their vocalist Kyo, doing many different amazing stuff with his voice!!
I recommend Vinushka or Macabre the 2013 version or Obscure the 2011 version!!
Please do more of this band :)
Thanks so much for making me go back and re-listen to the album this track is from. I don't remember it being as powerful as this.
You might also get a kick out of an old Japanese band called Malice Mizer. They're far more camp-theatrical but the singer, Gackt, has a really great (although much more traditional) range.
This is my favorite band. And kyo is my all time favorite vocalist. He's so diverse and can do so many amazing things. I've been waiting so long for a professional to react to his voice to see just how awe inspiring he is. You did an amazing job at this. If you enjoy this band I suggest checking out vinushka, macabre, or diabolos which are some truly amazing works. You've earned a new subscriber!
Loved the reaction. I definitely want to see you react to another one of their songs. Either "macabre" or "Vinushka". the singer has quite the range.
Kyo is a small man, only 5'3/4... but on stage... he's 10 feet tall. He commands the stage, the audience, and Diru's fans are probably some of the most loyal in Japan... I count myself a fanatic.
I would like you to experience one of their older stuff. Dir en Grey- Yokan. Nothing crazy, but everyone in the band is just constant, nothing stops. I think you will like how Kyo is singing back in that time.
Awesome! Dir En Grey is one of my favorite bands and KyĆ is one of the most versatile and talented vocals out there! With his other band Sukekiyo in the song Room 304 Tongue and Evening he reaches the highest note he can with those shrieks. It's outta this world! đ
I don't always know what you are talking about but to see you applying your craft and knowledge (and those genuine reactions) to some of my favorite bands is amazing! You've got a new sub. Keep up the good work :)
These guys are great, I play piano but it's still interesting to hear your analysis on his vocals. :)
Kyo's amazing. Seen him/them live 3 times and each time he got more and more inventive and in control of his vocals.
Will forever love Kyo! He is an incredibly inventive vocalist, I'm sure hes not the only one but hes certainly so rare that I've never seen anyone quite like it! He uses his voice very meticulously yet is able to perform it so seamlessly that he gives the impressions that hes possessed by several demons, a very fitting performance for the band
PLEASE DO MORE :O
He's an amazing vocalist, one of the best in the japanese metal scene!
Just metal scene. Or even music in general. He's easily the most versatile vocalist I've ever heard. Videos and albums don't do him justice, you have to see it live, it's a real experience.
It's interesting to see someone hearing and watching Dir en Grey for the first time :) I've been a huge fan for a better part of my life (gosh, just realised it's been 20 years!! O.O), and seeing them evolving, growing and developing more elaborate and complicated compositions has been a great thing. I can only be more curious about what they can bring next. True artists.
I love how You Get this. You don't just say what he's doing and dismiss it, you actually get it. I love it and how open you are to it.
Kyo has phenomenal range and I have been listening to DeG for years now, and Im SO glad to see you enjoy this!!!
Love your facial expression when he belted out his highs then suddenly growls.
if you ever do Dir en grey again please watch live versions of UROKO, DIABOLOS or DIFFERENT SENSE.
cheers! â€
I hope to see more dir en grey
Kyo's voice is just insane. I can't think of a more versatile vocalist, even outside of metal.
I have been telling people for years that Kyo's vocal range is amazing! I'm glad to finally have it backed up by a professional. Thank you on behalf of Dir En Grey fans for taking the time out to listen to this and critique.
Anyone who'd deny his vocal range is stupid.
Great review. Kyo just a freaky vocal beast !!
so so happy you did dir en grey! zakuro live is the most emotional live song if you ever get around to it. I almost cry every time
When it comes to dir en Grey Check out Obscure live at download 2013. that vocal preformace is great!
I highly suggest NEVER watching the music video for that song lol xD
i think you mean ANY DEG music video
Love this video, as a big fan of dir it's good to see someone who probably doesn't really listen to the band get genuinely excited by Kyo's amazing vocal talent.
Im a vocal coach too and while Im not a fan of heavy metal this guys vocal range is on another level
thank you for doing this video. i was just thinking of requesting a Dir en grey song.
awesome to finally see someone break down dir en grey. thank you for this.
I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, assuming I'm not mistaken, but it's all the more impressive when you consider that Kyo is a highschool drop out who's Japanese is hard for even native speaking Japanese to understand at times - And entirely self taught!
Dir en Grey is an incredibly versatile band, and all credit to Kyo. His range is all over the place (and I mean that in the best way) and they're fantastic live. Compare this to songs like Saku or Child Prey, it's almost a completely different sound.

Vinushka is their most complete song to me. It's pure art
Dir En Grey is Japan's King Diamond.
Beautiful Metal.
Kyo actually hits even higher notes than this song when he show cases his vocal. But those are never on DVD and not much of those is recorded either.
HOLY SMOKES!!! I forgot about this band thanks for bringing them up.
That was amazing and so is that band actually, they've been my favorite band since 2006
@Beth Roars... I like your reactional analysis. That higher, "female" placement is something that evolved over time through much trial and error. No shade, but it took almost 20 years, just within Dir en grey, to develop that control. The compression behind Kyo's general style has increased over the years, along with his ability to sense his vocal acuity. Spot on with the emotional/performance art bits. The energy alone holds my interest after 17 years :)
no need for review, but considering the length and spectrum of distortion and clarity....this one is worthy of analysis:
czcams.com/video/IrKAdFHrNZ4/video.html
Loved your reaction!
"This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he is a skilled human." - Beth Roars. "Abso-freakin-lutely." - Me.
Dir En Grey is amazing metal!
So glad I just saw dir en grey on a vocal react.
i THOUGHT I RECOGNIZED THOSE SUBS thats perixreloaded!!!! a woman of culture i see
Dir en Grey is my favourite band~ they are amazing in live~ love them so much !
I love your videos about Dir en Grey
you should check out "Igorrr" with the song "ieuD". It's definitly something worth experiencing. Both vocal parts are great (male and female) and the music itself is just a short piece of art.
True. Beth should check that out đ
The whole Savage Sinusoid album is brilliant.
ooh men, igorr, thats its other level.
Amazing skill and getting into character is his secret ingredients! Playing all the parts of the story and the ability to sing that with his vocals, not many out there who can do both sides that masterfully
I would love to see your reaction to Dir En Grey - Macambre
It's amazing!
Macabre
DIR EN GREY IS ART.
I'd love to hear you do Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation. The song Iter Impius live is one of my favourites. He has incredible range and control over his voice.
Ashley Meurig this this this this!!
Love dir en grey, and your review! Just subscribed. So happy to see a vocal coach give them a chance and see kyoâs artistry and vocal talent
Great vid. One of my favourite artists. Wasnt expecting to find Dir en grey on here. Sex Machineguns are another fantastic japanese metal band dripping with talent.
Would love to hear your reaction to a folk-metal band called Eluveitie. Maybe their song âRebirthâ for more of a metal direction, or if you want something softer, âEponaâ âLugusâ or âOmnosâ
Hell yeah
I'd say Epona or Call of the Mountains for softer stuff. As much as I love Rebirth, but I think she should do something with Anna still in the band.
@@damiengrief Tbh, I personally prefer Fabienne over Anna, so why not Lvgvus if you wanna go with softer stuff?
Also I think she would like the both singing, because its a nice contrast and Chrigel has a great Scream/Growl however you call it as well
@@damiengrief Personally I prefer Fabienne, but Anna Murphy is definitely a great singer. I actually prefer her work in Cellar Darling.
Yes! Rebirth music video please!
You looked entranced near the end of the video. Then boom you break it down. Awesome
Been a fan of dir en grey for 19 years and I'm always fascinated that people can get into their music after all these years and their big changes album after album. But i do wish they came to the states more often. Been a while since they last came by
iv watched alot of reaction videos by vocal coaches and yours are by far the best and immersive iv seen yet, im loving the videos keep up the great work!
also you should check out a band called into eternity, song timeless winter, i can honestly say iv never heard a man with the vocal range that singer has, hes the most versatile and dynamic singer iv ever heard!
Timeless winter has some incredible metal vocals.
You need to watch the "MACABRE" Tabula Rasa Tour perf, you're in for a treat.
Cool song! Cool voice! Cool reaction!
you should their vinushuka song, it's their masterpiece. a song that totally emotional and beautifull
Kyos voice is so Amazing!
Yes! DEG, your content rocks Beth.
There is another singer of a similar style, that is also a very talented man: Kyuho Lee, from Madmans Esprit, his technique is from another world. I strongly recommend seeing him live, he's amazing.
If you enter in the Japanese scenario, there a LOT of amazing singers, Tatsuro from MUCC, Ryutaro from Plastic Tree, Masato from Coldrain, Toshi from X Japan, Sakurai from Buck-Tick, Hyde from L'Arc~en~Ciel/VAMPS, and so many more...
Hope to see some of them, nice react, one more subscriber!
try to hear Dir en Grey - Lotus, FYI: Kyo (Dir en Grey Vocalist) more extreme in 2010, at that time he got damaged his vocal cords, and he get vocal cord surgery after bring a song titled "Hageshisato kono mune no..." you can try to hear it.
Lotus is such a beautiful song
@@chromesthesia agree bro, thats really hard song
Kyo is amazing said it before and will say it again.
His live performances give me goose bumps
Maaaan dir en grey were my shit it 2008, gonna go listen again
I really enjoy the rock vids! Glad I stumbled upon this channel. I'd love to see you review GWAR :-D
Hi there! I really enjoy your reactions! You remain so positive even beyond such extreme bands as dir en grey is! Thank you for not being afraid and for so many interesting remarks which explain so much))) And I want to suggest you to watch and discuss another j-band Onmyo-za (Onmyouza). The band plays japanese folk metal. It has so many interesting compositions and very talented male and female vocalists... The songs.... as most popular "Kouga ninpouchou" to check HER and "Michi" to check the duet for example)
You should definitely check out Sukekiyo. Kyo is the vocalist in that musical project :)
I like the format, I find interesting đ
Youâve got to do more dir en grey! Kyo has so many different styles he can do. each song theyâve put out has equally unique moments in them, I really hope you get to do another one or try THE GAZETTE they are also another very well know j-rock band.
I loved your reaction.
Kyo the vocalist of DEG, has a varied range of voices, from heartbreaking screams to soft melodies.
please react to:
1.-Diabolos
2.- Macabre (I love the metaphor of the lyrics of this song)
3.- Tousei (The feeling of pain of the vocalist feels)
PD: Sorry for my bad English, use a translator xD
